Verdict: Memerist is a focused Linux desktop app for putting text and image layers together, applying filters, previewing the result live, and exporting a PNG. That narrower workflow can feel much faster than opening GIMP for a straightforward caption meme, but the claim that it “beats GIMP in speed” is not backed by a reproducible benchmark. Memerist is best treated as a quick meme tool, not a general-purpose image-editor replacement.
What Memerist does
Memerist is distributed through Flathub as a desktop meme editor. The current Flathub listing shows version 0.8.1, with Linux desktop packages for x86_64 and aarch64. Its advertised workflow centers on text layers, image layers, real-time preview while typing, filters, and PNG export.

- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
Flathub also lists GIF-export optimizations and memory-related fixes for version 0.8.1. That is evidence of GIF-related development, not proof that Memerist offers the same animation-editing capabilities as a dedicated animation tool or GIMP.
Memerist is free to use. Its project page and source repository are available at vani-tty1.github.io/memerist and github.com/vani-tty1/memerist. The retrieved Flathub information does not establish all licensing details, so “free” should not be read as a specific license claim.
In practical terms, the distinction is simple:
- Meme composition: combine a base image, captions, and simple effects.
- General image editing: retouch, select, mask, correct color, and build complex composites.
- Animation: create or manage multiple frames and export animated output.
Memerist clearly targets the first category. GIMP remains substantially broader in the second; GIF-related notes alone do not establish parity in the third.

Why it can feel faster than GIMP
“Speed” can mean several different things, and they should not be conflated.
Task-completion speed
For a basic meme, Memerist exposes fewer decisions: import an image, add text, position it, apply an effect if wanted, and export. A purpose-built layer workflow avoids much of the setup associated with constructing the same composition in a general editor.
Learning speed
A smaller interface is easier to understand when the only goal is a caption image. Real-time preview while typing also reduces the cycle of opening a separate text dialog, confirming it, and correcting the result.

Startup and rendering speed
The available coverage does not provide controlled measurements for application launch, preview rendering, or export. There is no documented hardware, operating-system configuration, image size, font, application-version pairing, timing method, or repeated sample behind the headline claim. It is therefore accurate to describe Memerist’s advantage as lower task friction, not as a proven raw-performance win over GIMP.

Those details come from that older report, not the current Flathub feature summary, and should be checked against the installed build before being treated as guaranteed behavior. How to install Memerist on Linux
The verified distribution route is Flatpak through Flathub. If Flatpak and the Flathub remote are already configured, run:

flatpak install flathub io.github.vani_tty1.memerist
Launch it with:
flatpak run io.github.vani_tty1.memerist
If your distribution does not have Flatpak or Flathub enabled, follow the distribution-specific instructions in Flathub’s installation documentation. Software centers differ: generally, open the center, search for Memerist, choose the Flathub source if several are offered, then install.
Flatpak can download shared runtimes and sandbox access to files. If Memerist cannot see an image in a particular folder, check the file-access behavior of your distribution’s Flatpak integration rather than assuming the image is unsupported.
Memerist versus GIMP by task
| Task | Likely better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Add top-and-bottom captions | Memerist | Focused text-and-image workflow. |
| Reposition captions and export quickly | Memerist | Live preview and fewer controls reduce friction. |
| Apply a simple meme filter | Memerist | Filters are part of its advertised feature set. |
| Advanced photo cleanup | GIMP | Broader retouching and correction tools. |
| Masks and selections | GIMP | General-purpose compositing capabilities. |
| Detailed color correction | GIMP | More comprehensive image-adjustment controls. |
| Multi-image composition | Depends on complexity | Memerist may suit a simple layout; GIMP is safer for intricate work. |
| Complex typography or design layout | GIMP or a design tool | Memerist’s narrow workflow may not provide the required controls. |
| Animated export | Verify the current Memerist build | GIF-related release notes do not establish complete animation support. |
The fair comparison is not “which program is universally faster?” It is “which program gets this particular image from source to finished meme with fewer unnecessary steps?” For a one-image caption, Memerist has the structural advantage. Once the job involves masks, detailed corrections, elaborate layers, or precise design work, GIMP’s additional complexity becomes useful rather than wasteful.

Limitations to check before relying on it
- Imported-image scaling: the older report says overlays may not be resizable after import. Treat that as an item to verify in version 0.8.1; if confirmed, resize overlays beforehand.
- Typography: confirm font availability, fallback, bold or condensed faces, non-Latin scripts, and emoji on your system.
- Formats: verify PNG, JPEG, WebP, and GIF input behavior, especially with large images and unusual color profiles.
- Clipboard and desktop integration: test copy/paste, file-picker access, and Wayland or X11 behavior on your desktop.
- GIF semantics: determine whether the build exports animated GIFs, optimizes an existing path, or merely includes GIF-related code.
- Footprint: do not treat an unmeasured “small app” claim as an installed-size or memory benchmark. Flatpak application files, downloads, shared runtimes, and active memory are different measurements.
- Privacy and offline use: a desktop package does not by itself prove that the application never uses the network. Check the current permissions and project behavior before making a privacy guarantee.
Who should use Memerist?
Memerist is a sensible choice for Linux users who repeatedly make caption memes, want a local desktop workflow, and would rather not learn a full image editor for one narrow task. It is especially attractive when live text preview and a short export path matter more than advanced controls.
Stay with GIMP when the meme is also a retouched photograph, a detailed collage, a screenshot requiring cleanup, an illustration, or a design with demanding typography. GIMP’s mature layer, selection, mask, color, and compositing tools justify its larger interface in those situations.
Bottom line
Memerist can be faster to use than GIMP for simple Linux memes because it removes steps that a general-purpose editor exposes. The current Flathub release is 0.8.1, supports x86_64 and aarch64, and advertises text and image layers, live preview, filters, and PNG export. But “beats GIMP in speed” is not a measured universal result. Install it when you want a focused caption workflow; keep GIMP for serious image manipulation.
