Yes—Microsoft Designer is available as a free web and mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Microsoft announced the mobile launch on July 17, 2024, when Designer became generally available. It can generate images from text, remove objects, edit photos and create designs such as invitations, stickers, wallpapers and social posts.
However, “free” does not mean unlimited. Designer requires a Microsoft account, AI usage can be limited by credits, features vary by device and region, and Microsoft’s consumer support terms identify the service as intended for personal, non-commercial use.
What Microsoft Designer actually is
Designer is broader than an AI image generator. It combines prompt-based image creation with templates, layouts, text tools and AI photo editing. Microsoft’s original announcement described the standalone iOS and Android app alongside Designer features arriving in Microsoft Photos and other Microsoft products.

You can use it to create or edit:
- AI-generated images and social graphics
- Stickers, emojis, avatars and clip art
- Greeting cards, invitations and collages
- Phone wallpapers, monograms and banners
- Photos with erased objects, removed backgrounds or new frames
Microsoft’s current product information also lists resizing, text overlays, background blurring, object movement, upscaling up to 4K and brand-kit features. Availability can differ between the standalone app, the web app, Microsoft Photos and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

What launched in July 2024?
The July 17, 2024 announcement covered two related developments:
- The standalone Microsoft Designer app became generally available on iOS and Android.
- Designer tools began appearing in other Microsoft products, including Microsoft Photos, with further integration described for Microsoft 365 and Edge.
The launch-era tools included text-to-image generation, templates, suggested design ideas, background removal, object erasing, auto-cropping, adjustments, filters, markup and text overlays. Later mobile updates added features such as cutting out subjects, moving objects, focusing on selected areas, rewriting text with AI and applying styled text templates.
The launch date matters: this was a 2024 mobile release, not a new 2026 launch. The service has since evolved through app updates, integrations and Microsoft’s credit-based AI access model.

How to get Microsoft Designer
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Apple App Store.
- Search for Microsoft Designer.
- Confirm that the developer is Microsoft Corporation.
- Install the app and sign in with a Microsoft account.
The U.S. App Store listing captured for this guide described the app as free with in-app purchases and required iOS 17 or later. Check the live listing because operating-system requirements can change.
Open the official iOS listing.
Android
- Open Google Play.
- Search for Microsoft Designer.
- Verify that Microsoft is the developer.
- Install the app and sign in.
Open the official Google Play listing.
Web
You can also use Designer on the web. A personal Microsoft account is required. Microsoft says the account itself is free to create.

Generate a starting image
Describe the subject, style, mood and intended format—for example, a painted-looking botanical pattern for a phone wallpaper or a cheerful birthday illustration for a card. Treat the first result as a starting point rather than a finished asset.
Clean up a photograph
Designer can erase unwanted objects, remove or blur backgrounds, move subjects and apply adjustments or filters. This is useful for quick social posts, profile images and personal photos.
Create a finished design
Rather than generating an isolated image, start with a template for an invitation, banner, greeting card or social post. Add text, resize the layout and combine the generated artwork with your own photograph.
Make stickers, collages and frames
The app can turn ideas or uploaded images into stickers and collages. Microsoft’s FAQ also describes AI-generated frames around uploaded images and personalized collage frames.

Is Microsoft Designer free?
There is a free Designer experience, but it is not an unlimited image-generation service. Microsoft says users who want to create more frequently may need a subscription. AI credits and feature limits can apply.

Microsoft’s current support information says Microsoft 365 Personal and Family include 60 AI credits per month for listed AI features, including eligible image generation and editing. Those credits can be shared across eligible Microsoft AI experiences rather than being reserved exclusively for Designer. Activity in other products may therefore affect the allowance available for Designer.
Microsoft 365 Premium provides more extensive usage beyond standard limits. A U.S. Microsoft product page displayed Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month when checked on August 18, 2026, but prices, billing options and promotions vary by market and can change.
A subscription may make sense if you already need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or OneDrive. It is harder to justify if your only requirement is occasional image generation.
Check Microsoft’s current AI credit rules.
The most important limitation: commercial use
Do not assume that downloading an image—or paying for Microsoft 365—automatically gives you commercial rights. Microsoft’s Designer FAQ identifies the consumer service as licensed for personal, non-commercial use.
That limitation matters if you plan to use an output for client work, paid advertising, merchandise, a business logo, a monetized publication or another revenue-generating project. Before using Designer commercially, review the current terms and confirm that they cover your specific use. Also check logos, trademarks, recognizable people, copyrighted characters and other protected material separately.
A paid plan can increase access to AI features; it does not automatically resolve licensing, copyright, trademark or model-release questions.

Designer, Microsoft Photos and Microsoft 365 Copilot
The standalone app is not identical to every Designer-powered integration. Microsoft has described Designer editing tools in Photos, including object erasing, background removal, auto-cropping, adjustments, filters, markup and text additions. Microsoft has also described Designer integration in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on iOS and Android.
These entry points can have different requirements, app versions, account types and rollout status. A feature shown in the standalone Designer app may not appear in Photos or Copilot, and some Copilot features may require an eligible subscription.

- Text: Microsoft warns that generated wording can contain spelling errors or appear in the wrong language. Generate the artwork without text when possible, then add final wording separately.
- Faces and hands: Inspect people closely for distortions or unintended changes.
- Logos and product details: AI-generated brand marks and fine details may be inaccurate.
- Provenance: Microsoft says AI-generated and AI-edited images can receive content credentials based on the C2PA standard. These provide provenance metadata, not proof that an image is accurate, copyright-safe or legally cleared.
- Uploads: Review Microsoft’s current privacy and account terms before uploading sensitive photographs or personal information.
When Designer is a good fit
Designer is strongest when you want a quick, finished-looking personal design rather than granular control over every layer. It is particularly convenient for Microsoft users who want templates, image generation and basic editing in one ecosystem.
- Personal invitations and greeting cards
- Social posts and simple announcements
- Wallpapers, stickers and collages
- Quick photo cleanup
- Template-based designs for non-commercial use
It is a weaker choice for high-volume generation, professional prepress, advanced retouching, color-managed print work, precision typography, complex brand systems or commercial projects governed by strict licensing requirements.

- Adobe Firefly and Creative Cloud: Better suited to Adobe users who need generative features connected to professional design and photo tools.
- Dedicated image generators: Better for image-first experimentation, but generally less focused on turning the result into a complete layout.
These services have different pricing and licensing terms, so compare the current terms for your country and intended use rather than assuming that one tool’s rules apply to another.
Troubleshooting availability and missing features
If the app does not appear or a feature is missing:
- Confirm that the store listing identifies Microsoft Corporation as the developer.
- Check your phone’s operating-system requirement and update the app.
- Try designer.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
- Check whether your country, account age, subscription and product surface support the feature.
- Review Microsoft’s current FAQ if the feature remains unavailable.
Microsoft notes that some generative AI features may be unavailable when an account does not meet regional age requirements. Work or school accounts can also behave differently from personal accounts.

Verdict
Microsoft Designer is worth trying if you want fast personal designs, AI-assisted photo cleanup or a template-based alternative to a blank image-generator prompt. The free app is the sensible starting point.
Do not choose it expecting unlimited generations, professional layout control or automatic commercial rights. Its strongest advantage is the combination of image generation, templates and editing across Microsoft’s ecosystem—not raw image generation alone.
