Microsoft Designer’s iPhone and Android apps launched on July 17, 2024—not in 2026—but the AI-powered design tool remains available through its web app, the Apple App Store, and Google Play. It can generate images and simple graphics from text prompts, edit photos, and create personal projects such as invitations, stickers, collages, wallpapers, avatars, and social posts.
Designer is free to use with a personal Microsoft account, although AI usage is limited and Microsoft says a subscription may be needed for more frequent creation. It is best understood as a fast, prompt-first alternative to Canva—not a complete replacement for Canva’s templates, brand systems, collaboration, and business-focused workflows.
What Microsoft Designer is
Microsoft Designer is an AI-assisted image-generation and graphic-design service. Instead of beginning with a large template library, users can describe what they want in natural language and then refine the generated result.

The standalone mobile experience became available for iOS and Android when Microsoft’s preview ended on July 17, 2024. Designer is also connected to Microsoft’s wider ecosystem, including the web, Windows, Copilot, Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Photos. Those integrations are related to Designer, but they are not identical versions of the mobile app.

Microsoft’s current support documentation lists Designer access through designer.microsoft.com, Apple’s App Store, Google Play, and certain Microsoft applications.
How to access Designer
- Install the Designer app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or open the web app.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
- Describe the image or design you want to create.
- Choose a generated result or a starting point.
- Refine the image with editing controls, style changes, layout adjustments, or additional prompts.
- Download, share, or continue editing the result.
Availability can vary by country, age, account type, language, and feature. Microsoft also applies content-safety controls to AI features, and the service relies on online Microsoft services, so full offline operation should not be expected.
What can Designer create?
Microsoft’s launch materials described Designer as a tool for creating:
- Stickers, emojis, and clip art
- Wallpapers, monograms, and avatars
- Greeting cards and invitations
- Photo collages
- Social-media graphics
- AI-generated and AI-edited images
Microsoft’s current FAQ also describes tools for erasing unwanted objects, removing or blurring backgrounds, adding frames, upscaling images, creating banners, and adding AI-generated text.
For example, a user might enter:
“Create a square birthday invitation with pastel balloons, a clean white background, and space for event details.”

This should be treated as a starting point rather than a finished publication-ready design. Check the layout, faces, logos, colors, factual details, and spelling before sharing it.
How the AI workflow works
Designer’s main appeal is speed. A prompt can produce a first concept without requiring the user to understand layers, typography, or image-editing terminology. Users can then adjust the style and arrangement or start again with a more specific description.

Microsoft warns that text in generated images may contain spelling mistakes or appear in the wrong language. For an invitation, menu, announcement, or advertisement, it is safer to generate the visual background in Designer and add the final wording manually in a reliable editor.
Microsoft says AI-generated or AI-edited images receive provenance metadata based on the C2PA standard. That metadata can indicate how content was created, but it is not proof that an image is accurate, original, or legally cleared for every use.

Is Microsoft Designer free?
Designer is free to use with a Microsoft account, but “free” does not mean unlimited AI generation. Microsoft says people who want to create more frequently may need a subscription, and AI usage is subject to limits or credits that can vary by plan and feature.
Microsoft’s U.S. store listed Copilot Pro at $20 per user per month when checked on August 18, 2026. Microsoft says credits refresh monthly and can be used by AI actions in Designer and Microsoft 365 apps. Pricing, plan names, credit systems, and entitlements can change, so check the current Copilot Pro page before subscribing.

Copilot Pro should not automatically be treated as a mandatory Designer subscription. Microsoft describes Designer itself as free, while some Copilot features in Word and PowerPoint have separate requirements. Microsoft’s support documentation says certain web workflows require Copilot Pro, while desktop Word and PowerPoint also require an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription.
Designer’s Microsoft ecosystem connections
Designer is more useful for people already invested in Microsoft services. Microsoft has integrated Designer-related features into Word and PowerPoint, and contemporary launch coverage described deeper integration with Microsoft Photos on Windows 11, including tools such as object erasing, background removal, and auto-cropping.

These integrations should not be confused with the standalone mobile app. The available tools can differ between mobile, web, Windows, Microsoft 365, and Copilot depending on the user’s region, age, subscription, language, and account.
Designer vs. Canva
Designer and Canva overlap, but they emphasize different workflows. Designer is more AI-first: it is useful when the user wants to describe an idea and quickly receive a visual draft. Canva is the more established starting point for template-led, structured design work.

Do not assume that Designer’s consumer mobile app is cleared for business use. Microsoft’s mobile consumer license terms specify personal, non-commercial use.

That restriction matters for freelancers, small businesses, online sellers, and creators producing client work, paid advertising, merchandise, or other commercial material. A design that is easy to generate is not automatically licensed for every business purpose.
Before using Designer for commercial work, read the current terms for the exact product and feature. Independently review logos, trademarks, recognizable people, copyrighted characters, and other potentially protected material. Microsoft’s content credentials do not replace ownership or licensing checks.

- AI text can be unreliable: Proofread every generated word and manually replace important text when necessary.
- Features vary: Mobile, web, Windows, Microsoft 365, Copilot, language, age, region, and account type can affect what is available.
- Usage limits can change: Free allowances, credits, boosts, and paid-plan benefits are subject to Microsoft’s current terms.
- Online access is important: Generation, editing, synchronization, and sharing may be affected by a poor connection.
- Privacy deserves attention: Read Microsoft’s current privacy and service terms before uploading selfies, family photos, product images, or confidential business material.
- AI output still needs review: Inspect faces, hands, text, symbols, factual claims, and possible intellectual-property or likeness issues.
Who should use Microsoft Designer?
Designer is a good fit if you already use Microsoft services, want to create a graphic from a sentence, prefer AI-generated concepts to browsing templates, or mainly make personal and casual visual content on a phone.
Canva is likely the better choice if you need recurring business content, a broad template system, brand controls, presentations, multi-page documents, or team collaboration. Adobe Express is worth considering for users already working in Adobe’s ecosystem. Photoroom is more appropriate for product photography, while Picsart is better aligned with effects-heavy mobile editing. If short-form video is the main output, a creator-focused video tool such as CapCut is a different and more relevant category.
Verdict
Microsoft Designer is a capable AI-first mobile and web tool for quickly making personal graphics, invitations, stickers, avatars, collages, and social images. Its Microsoft-account integration and prompt-driven workflow make it a useful Canva alternative for casual creators.
It is not a universal Canva replacement. Canva remains the safer starting point for template-heavy, collaborative, brand-managed, presentation, and business workflows. Most importantly, Microsoft’s consumer mobile terms specify personal, non-commercial use, so businesses should not adopt Designer for paid work without checking the applicable terms first.
