Meta announced 3D AssetGen 2.0 on May 8, 2025, describing it as a new foundation model for generating textured 3D assets from text and image prompts. The system combines separate mesh- and texture-generation models, and Meta says it improves geometric detail, multi-view consistency, texture repair, and texture resolution over the earlier AssetGen system.
However, the announcement was not a documented launch of a public, standalone 3D generator. Meta said it was using AssetGen 2.0 internally and planned to roll it out to Horizon creators later in 2025. The announcement did not establish a public API, price, licensing model, export workflow, or universal availability. See Meta’s official AssetGen 2.0 announcement for the source details.

What Meta actually announced
Meta 3D AssetGen 2.0 is presented as a 3D foundation model, rather than simply a new button inside a modeling application. It is designed to accept text prompts and image prompts, then produce 3D meshes with generated textures.
Meta positioned the technology primarily around the Horizon and Avatar ecosystems. The company said AssetGen 2.0 was already being used internally for 3D-world creation and that it planned to make the technology available to Horizon creators later in 2025. That statement should be read as a planned platform rollout, not confirmation that anyone can download the model or use it through a general-purpose commercial API.
Meta also described AssetGen as a building block for a longer-term goal: generating complete 3D scenes sequentially, with objects, structures, and other environmental elements created from text or image guidance. That future direction is more ambitious than generating one object at a time, but it was not presented as a fully available, one-prompt world builder.
How AssetGen 2.0 works
At a high level, the system has two major parts:
- A mesh-generation model that creates the object’s three-dimensional geometry.
- A texture-generation model, called TextureGen, that produces the surface appearance applied to that geometry.
Meta says AssetGen 2.0 uses a single-stage 3D diffusion model for geometry. In practical terms, diffusion is a generative approach that progressively forms an output from noise or an incomplete representation. The important distinction here is architectural: Meta describes the new geometry process as replacing the previous system’s multistage approach with a direct 3D diffusion method.

The announcement also says the model was trained on a large corpus of 3D assets. Meta attributes the upgrade to more detailed geometry, greater structural consistency, and finer object features. TextureGen is intended to improve the result from different viewing angles, repair missing or damaged texture areas through in-painting, and support higher-resolution textures.
“Single-stage” does not mean that every part of a production workflow is automated. It describes the geometry-generation architecture. It does not establish that outputs need no preprocessing, cleanup, retopology, UV work, material editing, optimization, or quality control.

What improved over AssetGen 1.0?
Meta’s claimed improvements fall into two groups: geometry and surface appearance.
Geometry improvements
- More detailed meshes.
- Finer structural details.
- Greater geometric consistency.
- Direct use of a single-stage 3D diffusion approach.
Texture improvements
- Better consistency when the asset is viewed from different angles.
- Texture in-painting for repairing or filling surface regions.
- Higher texture resolution.
These are meaningful improvements over a system that produces a convincing object from only one view. A generated model is more useful when its silhouette, details, and materials remain coherent as the viewer walks around it.
There is an important limit to what the announcement proves. Meta did not publish a numerical comparison establishing exactly how much better AssetGen 2.0 is than AssetGen 1.0. The announcement does not provide independent benchmark scores, polygon limits, texture dimensions, or a universal generation-time guarantee.
How it relates to Meta 3D Gen
AssetGen 2.0 follows Meta’s earlier Meta 3D Gen research, announced on July 2, 2024. That earlier work combined Meta 3D AssetGen and Meta 3D TextureGen for text-to-3D generation, physically based rendering, and generative retexturing.
Meta 3D Gen was presented as producing assets in under a minute and as supporting the retexturing of existing shapes. AssetGen 2.0 should therefore be understood as a new iteration of the geometry-and-texture direction, not as an entirely unrelated product category.
The newer announcement emphasizes better geometry, multi-view texture consistency, in-painting, and texture resolution. It does not provide a complete technical comparison covering every capability of the earlier research system.

What can AssetGen 2.0 generate?
Based on Meta’s announcement, the intended outputs include:
- 3D objects generated from written descriptions.
- Objects guided by reference images.
- Textured meshes.
- Objects and structures intended for larger environments.
- Examples of animatable characters shown in Meta’s presentation.
- Eventually, sequences of scene elements that could contribute to complete 3D environments.
The safest interpretation is that AssetGen 2.0 is designed to create useful starting assets and increasingly complex scene content. Meta demonstrated examples, but examples are not the same as a guarantee that every prompt will produce a reliable, editable, optimized asset.
Image prompts also have inherent limitations. A single image may not reveal the back of an object, its true scale, its internal structure, or how thin and transparent parts should be modeled. The system must infer those missing details. Unusual mechanisms, articulated objects, transparent materials, repeated patterns, and very thin geometry can require additional human correction.
What “production-ready” should mean to a 3D artist
A model can look impressive in a rendered screenshot and still be unsuitable for a real project. Production readiness depends on the intended use.
A game or XR team may need:
- Clean, predictable topology.
- An appropriate polygon budget.
- A usable UV layout.
- Consistent normals.
- Editable physically based material maps.
- Reliable scale and orientation.
- Level-of-detail variants.
- Collision meshes and physics setup.
- Rigging, skinning, and deformation that work correctly.
- Compatibility with the target engine and hardware.
Meta’s announcement discusses high-quality textured output, but it does not establish that every generated asset satisfies all of these requirements. A visually convincing object is not automatically an editable artist asset, a ready-to-use Horizon object, a commercial game asset, or a manufacturing-grade model.
For most serious workflows, the likely value is as a rapid starting point: generate variations, block out an environment, explore a style, or give an artist a base mesh to repair and optimize. Characters may still require substantial rigging, facial setup, deformation testing, and animation work.

Availability: what is and is not confirmed
Availability note: Meta’s May 8, 2025 announcement said AssetGen 2.0 was being used internally and planned for rollout to Horizon creators later in 2025. The announcement did not specify a public downloadable model, standalone application, public API, price, subscription tier, commercial license, or universal access.
Because availability can change after an announcement, readers should check Meta’s current Horizon developer resources before relying on any claim of access. The documented announcement alone is not enough to state that AssetGen 2.0 is available to all developers, works outside Horizon, or can export assets to any preferred tool.

Why Horizon matters to the announcement
Meta’s platform strategy depends partly on having enough appealing, varied content for virtual environments. Traditional 3D production can be slow and requires specialized modeling, texturing, rigging, and optimization skills.
Prompt-based generation could let a creator quickly test an environment, produce placeholder props, explore alternative visual directions, or build a first-pass world without modeling every object manually. That may lower the barrier for small teams and non-specialists while giving experienced artists more time for art direction and refinement.
Meta has described the broader goal as making 3D creation more accessible in the way 2D content creation is accessible. That is a strategic ambition, not evidence by itself of Horizon adoption, creator earnings, user retention, or commercial success.

Where AssetGen 2.0 may fit best
Good potential uses
- Rapid blockouts and prototypes.
- Early-stage Horizon Worlds development.
- Placeholder props and environment elements.
- Concept exploration and visual ideation.
- Generating variations on a visual theme.
- Testing an XR or game concept before commissioning final art.
- Providing artists with editable starting points.
Less suitable uses
- Projects requiring strict topology or exact art-direction control.
- Character pipelines requiring dependable deformation and rigging.
- Engineering, CAD, manufacturing, or safety-critical work.
- Assets requiring guaranteed dimensions or physical accuracy.
- Commercial work that needs explicit training-data and output licensing.
- Teams that require a vendor-neutral API immediately.
- Large scenes with exact, repeatable style consistency across every asset.
Competition and alternatives
AssetGen 2.0 sits in a wider effort to automate parts of 3D creation, but the available sources do not establish a common benchmark for ranking these systems.
Meta 3D Gen is the closest predecessor and provides the clearest context for AssetGen’s mesh-and-texture approach. Roblox Cube 3D represents a more open, text-oriented strategy according to contemporary reporting. Stability AI’s Stable Fast 3D is an image-to-3D approach reported as targeting rapid asset generation. OpenAI’s Shap·E is an earlier text-to-3D research project based on implicit 3D representations.
These projects differ in model architecture, access, licensing, output format, workflow integration, and intended users. It would be inaccurate to call AssetGen 2.0 objectively superior without independent testing under the same prompts and production requirements.
Copyright, consent, and provenance questions
Generative 3D tools create questions that visual quality alone cannot answer. Meta’s AssetGen 2.0 announcement does not disclose enough information to resolve them.

Before using generated assets commercially, creators should seek clear answers about:
- What data was used to train the model.
- Whether generated assets can be commercially licensed.
- How recognizable copyrighted designs are handled.
- Who is responsible for rights in uploaded reference images.
- How prompts and uploaded images are stored or processed.
- Whether provenance metadata is attached to outputs.
- Whether assets can be exported outside Meta’s ecosystem.
- Whether special restrictions apply to avatars, brands, or user-generated content.
These are unresolved product and policy questions, not evidence that Meta has violated anyone’s rights. They are simply essential checks for studios, businesses, and creators who need defensible ownership and licensing records.
What the announcement does not prove
- It does not prove that AssetGen 2.0 was a public standalone product.
- It does not prove that one prompt can create a complete, optimized, playable world.
- It does not prove that every output is production-ready.
- It does not provide benchmarked superiority over competing systems.
- It does not establish pricing, API access, export formats, or commercial licensing.
- It does not show that professional 3D artists are replaceable.
The more defensible conclusion is that AssetGen 2.0 could reduce repetitive modeling work and shift more effort toward art direction, cleanup, optimization, integration, and quality control.
Bottom line for creators and developers
Meta AssetGen 2.0 is significant as a technology and platform direction. Its single-stage 3D diffusion approach targets better geometry, while the accompanying texture system targets more consistent and higher-resolution surfaces. Together, those improvements could make prompt-assisted 3D asset creation more useful for Horizon prototyping and environment building.
Recommended Free Tools
Its practical importance depends on details the announcement did not settle: access, exportability, licensing, reliability, topology, optimization, and integration with established 3D pipelines. Treat the technology as a potentially powerful asset-generation aid—not as proof that complete production-ready worlds can already be created from a single prompt.
