Microsoft’s in-house image model, MAI-Image-1, launched on November 4, 2025, through Copilot and Bing Image Creator. It is not primarily a separate app: it is a model available inside Microsoft’s existing image-generation tools.

Early launch reactions praised its photorealistic lighting, reflections, textures, landscapes, food imagery, and reported improvements in hands. Those reactions are encouraging, but they are anecdotal—not the result of a broad independent benchmark. For painters, the practical appeal is straightforward: Bing Image Creator offers a free, low-friction way to generate references, mood boards, composition ideas, and visual starting points.
What Microsoft actually launched
MAI-Image-1 is Microsoft’s first image-generation model developed entirely in-house. Microsoft positions it around photorealistic imagery, with particular emphasis on lighting, bounce light, reflections, textures, and natural scenes. Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator documentation now lists MAI-Image-1 alongside other models and references newer MAI variants, including MAI-Image-2e.
That distinction matters. MAI-Image-1 is the model; Bing Image Creator is the interface. Copilot can also provide image-generation features, but there is no need to download a separate “MAI-Image-1” application.
The original launch was reported by Digital Trends on November 4, 2025. At launch, Microsoft integrated the model into Copilot, Bing Image Creator, the Bing mobile app, and related Copilot experiences.

Launch-period reactions highlighted several areas that matter to visual artists:
- More convincing photorealism.
- Natural-looking directional light and reflections.
- Detailed textures in food, landscapes, and materials.
- Reportedly cleaner hands and finger anatomy.
- Useful results for concept work and visual exploration.
However, “early testers are loving it” should be read as a description of reported enthusiasm, not a measured consensus. The launch coverage does not establish that MAI-Image-1 beats Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, Gemini, or other systems under controlled conditions. Better lighting in one prompt does not guarantee better results for every subject.

How painters can try Bing Image Creator
- Open Bing Image Creator.
- Select Sign in to Create.
- Use a personal Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Choose an available model if the interface offers model selection.
- Select Create, then save or download the result.
Microsoft documents Bing Image Creator as free with a personal Microsoft account. Availability and controls can vary by region, account, rollout, and interface version. Work or school accounts using Microsoft Entra ID may not be supported.

Microsoft’s current documentation describes the following limits:
- 15 free fast creations per day.
- Standard creation remains free but may be slower.
- Microsoft Rewards points can be used for additional fast creations, subject to Microsoft’s current terms.
- Up to 200 prompts per 24-hour period.
These are documented limits, not permanent guarantees. Microsoft may adjust allowances by account, region, rollout, or policy. If results become slow, you may have used the day’s fast creations rather than encountered a technical problem.
Which models are available?
The current Bing Image Creator page lists model choices including MAI-Image-1, GPT-4o, and DALL-E 3, while also referring to newer MAI variants. The exact selector may therefore differ from screenshots or launch reports.
For a painter, the model choice can affect the balance between realism, style, composition, and prompt interpretation. If the selector is missing, Microsoft may be routing requests automatically, the feature may not have reached your account, or you may be using a different Microsoft surface.

Generation and editing are not the same thing
One important limitation is easy to miss: according to Microsoft’s FAQ, uploaded-image editing uses GPT-4o rather than MAI-Image-1 or DALL-E 3. In other words, choosing MAI-Image-1 for a new image does not mean that the same model will handle every later edit.
For serious painting preparation, use generated images as references rather than assuming that an edit will preserve every proportion, object, or lighting decision. Keep your own sketches and photo references available.
Prompt examples for painters
Microsoft recommends specifying the subject, action, setting, style, mood, lighting, and camera angle. Specific prompts are usually more useful than one-line requests such as “a beautiful landscape.” Try prompts like these:

Concept development

These prompts may produce useful starting points, but they do not guarantee accurate hands, readable text, consistent characters, or faithful geometry. Generate several variations and treat the result as an idea to interpret—not as an unquestionable visual authority.

- Composition studies: Explore arrangements, focal points, and crops before beginning a painting.
- Lighting experiments: Compare warm bounce light, overcast conditions, rim light, or dramatic side lighting.
- Mood boards: Quickly gather visual directions for a series or commission.
- Landscape ideation: Test weather, season, atmosphere, and broad color relationships.
- Still-life planning: Explore combinations of objects, surfaces, and backgrounds.
- Concept art: Develop environments or narrative scenes before refining them through drawing.
Where painters should be cautious
Photorealism does not make a generated image a reliable factual reference. AI images can contain subtly impossible anatomy, inconsistent perspective, invented architecture, and lighting that does not behave consistently across objects.
Do not rely on generated output for:
- Accurate logos, labels, packaging, or signs.
- Readable text or documents.
- Consistent characters across a long series.
- Precise product or architectural documentation.
- Unreviewed commercial artwork.
- Claims about real people, places, or events.

The model selector is missing
Open the dedicated Bing Image Creator page, sign in with a personal account, and try the desktop web interface or Bing mobile app. If only a generic image-generation button appears, Microsoft may be routing the request automatically.
You cannot create images
Check that you are signed in, using a personal rather than work or school account, and within the service’s regional availability. You may also have reached the daily prompt limit or triggered a safety restriction.

Generation is slow
You may have exhausted the daily fast-generation allowance. Wait for standard generation or use Microsoft Rewards points for additional fast creation, where available.
The image contains strange hands or text
State how many people are present, specify which hands should be visible, describe the pose and camera angle, and request an uncluttered composition. Generate variations, then correct typography and anatomy in a conventional editor or through your own painting process.
A prompt is blocked
Microsoft applies safety controls to its generative-image services. A blocked prompt may reflect policy enforcement rather than the model’s technical inability to depict the subject. Do not attempt to bypass those safeguards.
Is MAI-Image-1 a meaningful shift for Microsoft?
Yes, in a strategic sense. An in-house model gives Microsoft greater control over model iteration and integration across Bing and Copilot. It also supports Microsoft’s broader effort to make Copilot a creative tool rather than only a text assistant.

That does not mean Microsoft has abandoned third-party models. Bing Image Creator documentation continues to list GPT-4o and DALL-E 3 alongside Microsoft’s MAI models. The practical change is that users can encounter Microsoft’s own image-generation technology within the same consumer ecosystem.
How it compares as a workflow
Bing Image Creator is strongest when the priority is free, simple experimentation. Adobe Firefly is more naturally suited to Adobe-centered creative workflows; Midjourney is aimed at dedicated, style-driven image exploration; and Canva combines image generation with layouts, templates, branding, and publishing. Their current prices, limits, and commercial terms can change, so consult each provider’s official pages before purchasing.
For a painter, Bing Image Creator is best viewed as a quick reference and ideation tool. It is less suitable as a complete production environment for asset management, batch generation, consistent branding, or detailed post-production.
Verdict
MAI-Image-1 was a significant step toward Microsoft’s own image-generation stack, and early reactions were especially positive around realism, lighting, reflections, textures, and nature imagery. Its most practical advantage is accessibility: Bing Image Creator lets personal-account users experiment without a conventional subscription, although fast-generation and prompt limits apply.
