Midjourney Alpha is best understood as Midjourney’s web-based creation experience, rather than the name of its current default model. On the Create page, you can enter a prompt, add image references and settings, and see images generate in a live feed; the site also supports editing, personalization, organization, and image-to-video work. Midjourney’s official version documentation says V8.2 has been the default since July 24, 2026, and a subscription is required to begin.
What Midjourney Alpha means now
Midjourney’s web experience brought image generation beyond the Discord command workflow. The web interface makes prompts, references, generation settings, and results available in a visual workspace, while Discord remains another way to use Midjourney.

“Alpha” can also refer to a model test. Midjourney’s version documentation says V8.0 launched as an early-access Alpha on March 17, 2026, and remained available on the Alpha website until July 24, 2026. That is a historical model designation, not the name of the current default web experience.
Midjourney says V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Its version notes describe V8.2 as focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization. They also identify the new Edit Model, which replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture; V8.X inpainting and outpainting use this Edit Model. Check Midjourney’s version documentation for current status and compatibility.

How to generate an image on the website
- Sign in to Midjourney and open the Create page. Midjourney says a subscription is required to begin.
- Enter a description in the Imagine bar. You can describe the subject, setting, composition, lighting, medium, or mood, then submit the prompt.
- Add image references or adjust available settings, such as aspect ratio, version, SD or HD output, Raw, stylization, weirdness, variety, generation speed, and video options.
- Watch the creation feed for results. Midjourney’s Getting Started Guide describes an initial set of four images.
- Iterate from the feed by making variations, rerunning a prompt, editing a result, or creating a video where available.
- Use Organize to search, filter, sort, and manage creations, including with folders.
Midjourney’s Creating on Web guide says uploaded images can be used as image prompts, Style References, or Edit Model references. It lists a maximum uploaded image size of 10 MB. References guide output; they do not guarantee exact reproduction.
What the website adds to generation
The web workflow brings creation together with editing, personalization, and organization. Midjourney identifies the Editor, Personalization profile and Moodboard tools, and Conversational mode as website-only features.
- Editor: Work on Midjourney creations or personal images. Documented tools include Remix, inpainting or Vary Region, Pan, and Zoom Out; the Edit tab provides more advanced editing and external image upload.
- Personalization: Use a profile based on images you select or like. You can toggle the Personalization control beside the Imagine bar or apply a profile with –p.
- Moodboards: Curate images to develop a particular visual style.
- Conversational mode: Describe an idea in plain language, by typing or speaking, and have it turned into a prompt. Midjourney says this mode works in non-English languages as well.
- Organization and discovery: Search and manage creations with filters, sorting, folders, and bulk management.
Personalization is compatible with versions 6 and later, according to Midjourney’s Personalization documentation. The V7 Global Profile works with V8.2, while V8-specific profiles are not compatible with V7. Image prompts, Style References, Moodboards, and Edit Model references have different roles: use them to guide content, composition, style, or edits, not as a promise of an exact match.

Midjourney’s plan comparison lists four subscription tiers. The table summarizes the current documented prices and Fast GPU allowances; check the official page before subscribing because prices and features may change.

Midjourney describes annual billing as a 20% discount versus monthly billing. Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generation in Relax Mode. Unlimited video generation in Relax Mode is listed for Pro and Mega. Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is available only on Pro and Mega. Choose a plan based on your expected Fast usage, need for relaxed image or video generation, and privacy requirements rather than assuming one tier suits everyone. Check the plan comparison for other limits, such as concurrent prompts.

Privacy and commercial use
Using the website does not automatically make images private. Midjourney says Stealth Mode is available on Pro and Mega plans and keeps images and videos private. Check the current plan terms and settings before generating work that requires confidentiality.
Midjourney’s subscription, privacy, and commercial-use terms govern use of the service. Contractual permission to use an output does not by itself settle copyright questions. For important commercial work, review the current commercial-use guidance and terms, and get legal advice where appropriate.

Common questions
Is Midjourney Alpha still the current model?
No. “Alpha” refers to a historical web experience and to the V8.0 early-access model test. Midjourney’s version documentation identifies V8.2 as the default since July 24, 2026.
Do I need Discord to use Midjourney?
No. Midjourney has a web creation experience with a Create page, Imagine bar, settings, references, and a live feed. Discord remains an alternative workflow.
Can I use my own images as references or edit them?
Yes. Midjourney’s web documentation says uploaded images can be used as image prompts, Style References, or Edit Model references, and the Editor can work on personal images. The documented maximum upload size is 10 MB.

No. Midjourney lists Stealth Mode only for Pro and Mega. Review the current plan comparison and privacy settings before relying on it.

The Create page combines prompts, references, settings, and results with web-exclusive editing, personalization, conversational prompting, and organization tools. Before choosing the service, check the current version, plan features, and privacy requirements in Midjourney’s official documentation.
