Midjourney V7 launched on April 3, 2025, and became the default model on June 17, 2025. Midjourney described improvements to prompt interpretation and image detail, and introduced Draft Mode and Omni Reference; the available evidence does not establish that V7 conclusively fixed specific image-generation defects or outperformed earlier models in independent benchmarks.
V7 is now a historical release, not the current default: Midjourney’s version history says V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Here is what V7 changed, what its features could and could not do, and how its workflow differs from the current one.
V7’s place in Midjourney’s version history
Midjourney’s version history dates V7’s release to April 3, 2025. It became the default model on June 17, 2025, and remained the default through June 9, 2026. V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. These dates describe the product’s history, not a judgment about which version produces the best result for every prompt.

What changed in V7?

Draft Mode: explore before committing
V7 Draft Mode was designed for quick exploration. A prompt generated four images at half the GPU cost of standard V7 prompts. Once a direction looked promising, a creator could enhance it to generate a similar result at standard GPU cost, or upscale the draft itself.
- Use Draft Mode to explore possible compositions or visual directions.
- Review the draft images and choose a promising result.
- Enhance the selection for a similar result at standard GPU cost, or upscale the draft.
These details are specific to V7. Midjourney documents a different Draft Mode workflow for later versions, so do not assume its batch size, resolution, or cost applies to V7.
Omni Reference: subject continuity with tradeoffs
Omni Reference let a creator provide one image of a person, object, vehicle, or non-human creature and describe a new scene around it. It was intended to carry a subject into a new V7 creation, not to guarantee an exact copy.

Its limitations mattered in practice: Midjourney documents twice the GPU time of a regular V7 image, incompatibility with Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, and --q 4, and incompatibility of results with Vary Region, Pan, and Zoom Out. Midjourney also warns that intricate details, such as freckles or clothing logos, may not match perfectly.
V7 Style References also had version-specific behavior. Midjourney documents six V7 Style Reference versions; its current documentation identifies --sv 4 as the older V7 style-reference model from before June 16, 2025, and --sv 6 as the default described on that page. Do not assume style codes behave identically without specifying the version.
How V7 differs from the current workflow
Midjourney’s current version history identifies V8.2 as the default model. For V8, the current Omni Reference page directs users to the Edit Model. Midjourney says the V8.2 Edit Model replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture, and can incorporate up to four reference images. Consult Midjourney’s version history and Omni Reference documentation for the current version-specific guidance.

Personalization has some continuity across versions: Midjourney says a V7 Global Personalization Profile remains compatible with V8.1 and V8.2. For details, see its Personalization documentation and Edit Model guidance linked from the current reference documentation.
What V7 did—and did not—fix
Midjourney presented V7 as a step forward in prompt precision and coherent detail, particularly for bodies, hands, and objects. Draft Mode offered a lower-cost way to explore, and Omni Reference added a one-image subject-reference workflow. Those descriptions support explaining what the release aimed to improve and what it enabled; they do not prove that a specific defect was conclusively fixed.
No independent head-to-head benchmark or measured quality improvement was found in the research for this article. Treat claims about better prompts or detail as Midjourney’s qualitative product descriptions, and inspect generated results for the requirements of your project.

Did V7 Omni Reference guarantee an exact match?
No. It offered a one-image subject-reference workflow, but Midjourney warns that intricate details such as freckles or clothing logos may not match perfectly. It also had documented mode and editing incompatibilities.
