A mini pinwheel ornament can either spin on a loose paper fastener or stay fixed as a hanging decoration. Choose the spinning build if you want a turning pinwheel; choose the glued build if the priority is a stable ornament. “Mini” has no standard size in the cited craft instructions, so the dimensions below are a practical project choice, not a universal definition.
Choose the build before gathering supplies

These are different constructions: a glued center is decorative and fixed, while a loose fastener is the pivot for rotation. Cardstock is recommended by the cited tutorials to help the shape hold, but they do not compare paper weights or identify a best weight for a small pinwheel.

Make a small spinning pinwheel
This version adapts Crayola’s documented 6-inch-square method to a 4-inch square, a manageable project size rather than a standardized mini measurement. The source’s folding, cutting and fastening method remains the same.
Gather supplies
- One 4-inch square of cardstock or sturdy decorative paper
- Scissors
- A hole punch
- One brass paper fastener
- A straw, if you want a handle or display support like the cited tutorials
Cut, fold and fasten
- Fold the square diagonally in half, open it, then fold it along the other diagonal and open it again. The creases mark the center.
- Cut from each corner along its diagonal crease, stopping short of the center. Do not cut all the way through; leave an uncut central area to hold the blades together.
- Use the hole punch to make a hole in the center and in the same selected corner of each triangular blade. Keep the corner holes aligned as you bring them inward.
- Bring the punched corners to the center, one at a time, and pass the brass fastener through the aligned corner holes and the center hole.
- Open the fastener on the back, but do not clamp it tightly against the paper. Crayola recommends leaving its brass fastener slightly loose to help the pinwheel spin.
- Attach the center to a straw only if you are following a straw-mounted display. Keep the straw attachment from pressing the pinwheel tightly against its pivot.
Make a fixed hanging ornament
For a pinwheel that is meant to hang rather than turn, follow an ornament-specific template and its fold-and-glue construction. Country Design Style describes a cardstock ornament with folded corners, a button at the center and twine for hanging; use that tutorial’s template rather than assuming the spinning version’s loose pivot will produce the same result.

- Fold the template’s designated corners toward the center and secure them with glue as directed. The glued center makes this a fixed decorative pinwheel, not a freely spinning one.

- Make a hole for the hanging loop with a hole punch. The listed supplies include a large needle and twine; use the tutorial’s method to thread and secure the twine.
Display ideas and practical limits
The cited instructions frame pinwheels as Christmas tree ornaments and also describe paper pinwheels as party decorations and cupcake toppers. A hanging twine loop suits an ornament; the straw-mounted approach suits a handheld or supported display. The sources do not establish weather resistance, so treat these paper builds as indoor decorations rather than outdoor-weatherproof ornaments.
Crayola and Country Design Style both support cardstock for holding the form, but there is no controlled comparison of paper types or thicknesses for very small designs. If the paper does not retain its shape, a sturdier cardstock is a reasonable adjustment, not a guarantee of durability. The cited sources also do not establish child-safety guarantees; supervise cutting and use of small fasteners as appropriate for the maker.

Troubleshoot the result
- The spinning version will not turn: Check that the brass fastener is not tightened against the paper and that the blades are not trapped by a straw attachment.
- The blades will not meet neatly: Recheck that every corner hole is in the same relative position and that the cuts stop before the center.
- The ornament loses its shape: The cited ornament tutorial recommends cardstock; the sources do not establish a specific weight or guarantee that a given paper will hold over time.
