Build a clean, reusable logo reveal in After Effects by keeping the animation short, the logo easy to replace, and effects secondary to readability. This walkthrough covers a practical reveal from scratch, then shows how to organize it as a template that can accommodate different logos, colors, taglines, and delivery formats.

What makes a logo animation feel modern?

Modern does not mean adding more effects. It usually means the logo becomes recognizable quickly, motion has a clear direction, and the final design stays legible long enough to read. Give the viewer a hierarchy: mark first, wordmark next, tagline last. Use consistent spacing and stroke weights, smooth acceleration and deceleration, and a final hold that is not cut off as soon as the reveal finishes.

Choose motion to suit the identity. A minimal or corporate logo may need only a mask reveal, opacity, and a slight scale settle. A technology brand can use geometric strokes or a clean wipe, perhaps with a restrained glow. Entertainment or gaming work can support faster timing and stronger overshoot; luxury or beauty work may benefit from a slower, more delicate reveal. For a flat-brand system, preserve the flat design rather than adding bevels or metallic effects that fight it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A focused reveal often lands in the 3–7 second range, but that is a useful starting point, not a rule. The right duration depends on how much must appear, the soundtrack, and where the animation will be used.

Before you animate: choose and prepare the logo

Use the best source artwork available, and keep an untouched copy. A layered Illustrator file is a strong choice when icon, wordmark, or other components need separate animation. Vector artwork scales cleanly and can be converted to shape layers for path, fill, stroke, or Trim Paths control. A transparent PNG is convenient for a simple reveal, but it will not give you editable internal paths or easy recoloring of individual parts. Avoid JPEG where possible: it has compression artifacts and no transparency.

Artwork Best for Trade-off
Layered Illustrator or other vector artwork Separate elements, clean scaling, recoloring, and path animation May need cleanup and thoughtful layer organization
Transparent PNG A quick reveal of a finished logo Internal shapes are not independently editable; scaling is limited by source resolution
JPEG Only when no better source is available and a background is acceptable Compression and no transparency make it a poor default
Editable text Taglines, names, and other text that clients may change The recipient needs the correct font and appropriate license
Outlined text Consistent appearance when the font is unavailable It is no longer convenient to edit as text

For a layered Illustrator file, use File > Import > File and choose Composition – Retain Layer Sizes when available and appropriate. This keeps the artwork separated in a composition while preserving useful layer bounds. Keep the imported original as a backup. Convert only the pieces that need shape-layer controls: select an Illustrator layer, right-click, and choose Create Shapes from Vector Layer. Keep text as editable text if the template needs text replacement; converting everything can make customization harder. Adobe’s current After Effects help is the reference for version-specific interface details.

Set up the project and compositions

Save the project inside a dedicated folder before importing assets. Organize it so another editor can find the editable art, renders, and dependencies without searching through a pile of unnamed files. For example:

Use clear names such as Logo_Animation_MASTER, Logo_Animation_16x9, Logo_Animation_1x1, Logo_Animation_9x16, Replace_Logo_Here, and Tagline_Edit. Name important layers too: CONTROLS, Logo_Icon, Logo_Wordmark, Reveal_Matte, Accent_Lines, Background, and Tagline_Text.

Build for the destination, not a supposed universal preset. Common starting dimensions are 1920 × 1080 for horizontal HD, 3840 × 2160 for horizontal 4K, 1080 × 1080 for square, and 1080 × 1920 for vertical. Choose 24, 30, or 60 frames per second according to the delivery requirement; 30 fps is a practical starting point for many web and social projects, but a client or platform specification takes precedence. Create alternate aspect-ratio compositions when needed and reframe each one deliberately rather than simply cropping the horizontal master.

Build a simple reveal from scratch

Start with a readable animation before adding accents. In the main composition, position the logo and use the Align panel to center it. If the icon and wordmark should enter separately, keep them on separate layers or precompositions. A null object named CONTROLS can provide a shared parent for global position, scale, or rotation.

A dependable first pass uses scale and opacity:

  1. At the intended end of the reveal, set Scale to about 100%, Opacity to 100%, and Position to the final placement.
  2. At the beginning, set Opacity to 0% and Scale to roughly 80–90%. If the motion should have direction, offset Position slightly as well.
  3. Select the keyframes and apply Easy Ease. Open the Graph Editor and shape the speed so the logo enters briskly and settles smoothly.
  4. Preview at full speed. Adjust the spacing, timing, and final hold before adding more effects.

At 30 fps, a useful timing sketch might start a matte or line between frames 0–8, reveal the main mark around frames 8–24, bring in the wordmark around frames 20–40, and settle into a hold around frames 40–60. These are only example ranges: stagger related elements by a few frames when it improves the hierarchy, not just to make every layer move at a different time. A shorter version can compress this sequence, but keep enough hold for the finished logo to register.

Add restrained overshoot

For a little energy, let the logo pass its final size briefly—perhaps 102–104%—before settling at 100%. A corporate or luxury identity may need less, while entertainment work may support more. If the result feels bouncy when the brand should feel precise, reduce the overshoot and shorten the settle. The Graph Editor, not a pile of effects, is where this timing becomes intentional.

Reveal the logo with a mask or track matte

A directional wipe can make a simple animation feel designed. Create a solid or shape layer above the logo, draw a rectangular, diagonal, or radial mask, and animate the mask path or move the matte across the artwork. Use the matte to reveal the logo, then ease the motion and refine its speed in the Graph Editor. A horizontal wipe often suits a clean technical look; a diagonal sweep feels more energetic; a radial reveal can fit a circular badge. A segmented reveal works when the logo has parts that should appear in a meaningful order.

A little mask feather can soften an edge, but the right amount depends on resolution, scale, and whether the design calls for a crisp or soft boundary. A value such as 10–30 pixels is only a starting point for some 1080p compositions, not a default to apply blindly. Too much feather can make a mark look blurry.

After Effects versions and workspace layouts can display track-matte controls differently. Identify the matte-to-target relationship in the layer controls rather than relying on a particular screenshot or panel position. If the reveal fails, check that the matte is assigned to the intended target, uses alpha or luma as intended, covers the logo, and is not inverted or disabled. Check the target’s opacity and blend mode too. If nested transformations or different precomposition dimensions are causing surprises, precompose the matte and target together and verify that the matte is not cropped.

Use Trim Paths for line-based artwork

Trim Paths works well for outline icons, monograms, circular marks, and short geometric accents. Convert suitable vector artwork to a shape layer, open its Contents, and add Trim Paths. Set Start and End to 0% at the first keyframe, then animate End to 100% at the last keyframe and ease the motion. If the finished logo should be solid, place a filled version underneath so the outline can draw on and resolve into the complete mark.

Trim Paths is not a universal solution for complex filled artwork. Nested paths may draw in an unhelpful order. If the result is confusing, use a matte reveal, opacity sequence, or manually separated layers instead of forcing every path into a line animation.

Add detail only after the logo works

Thin lines, circles, dots, simple geometric blocks, a subtle gradient, or a brief highlight can support the reveal. Keep accents in their own precompositions so they can be recolored or switched off without altering the core logo animation. For 1080p work, 2–6 pixel strokes are a possible starting range for fine accents; scale proportionally for 4K and judge the result at the size where the animation will actually be seen.

Use glow, blur, drop shadow, or Screen/Add blending only when the design benefits from it. One restrained light sweep can be made by duplicating the logo, using the duplicate as a matte or alpha source, and moving a narrow white or brand-colored shape across it. Set the highlight to Screen or Add and lower its opacity so it does not compete with the logo. A sweep is a poor fit for a deliberately flat, minimal, or accessibility-focused identity. The logo should still read with optional effects disabled; effects cannot fix weak timing, poor spacing, or an unclear silhouette.

Turn the animation into a reusable template

A useful template makes the editable parts obvious and avoids scattering the logo across many nested compositions. Put the sample artwork in one clearly named placeholder composition, such as Replace_Logo_Here, and reference that composition from the master animation where possible. Give it a fixed frame size and centered anchor point. Include sample artwork and guide text explaining how to replace it, but make the instructions a guide layer so they do not render.

Centralize common options on a null layer named CONTROLS. Depending on the animation, add Color Controls for primary and accent colors, a Slider Control for logo scale or timing, a Checkbox Control for tagline visibility, and checkboxes for optional particles, a light sweep, or a background texture. Expressions can link fills, strokes, glow colors, and visibility to these controls. Keep expressions simple, name the referenced controls clearly, and document them: a template should remain understandable without asking its user to debug code.

Keep tagline and website text editable where practical. Document the font name and version, verify that its license allows the intended use, and provide a fallback font or outline only decorative text that cannot remain editable. The recipient may not have the same font installed.

Test the placeholder with more than one logo

A template that works for one wide wordmark may fail with another shape. Replace the sample with a wide wordmark, a stacked logo, a circular icon, a simple one-color mark, and a transparent PNG. If the template is meant for vector artwork with multiple paths, test that too. Try a long tagline as well as a short one. Watch for cropping, off-center anchors, unsuitable scaling, gaps in matte coverage, and elements that leave the composition. Also test a different color and each alternate aspect ratio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what to make editable

Keep the core logo and its timing editable. Optional decorative effects can be pre-rendered to improve compatibility or playback, but pre-rendering trades away editability. For expressions, use central controls for repetitive changes such as color and visibility, but avoid a fragile network of references that breaks when a user renames a layer. If a project depends on third-party plug-ins, disclose them and consider including a rendered fallback for optional effects.

Build, customize, or commission?

Approach Good fit Trade-off
Build from scratch Learning, brand-specific design, and full control Takes longer to set up initially
Customize a template Fast turnaround or repeatable deliverables May be generic, hard to customize, or dependent on plug-ins
Use a template as a learning scaffold Learning the structure while getting a starting animation May need cleanup before client delivery
Commission a motion designer High-value launches or distinctive, complex motion Costs more, but can be tailored to the identity

If you download an After Effects template, first locate its placeholder, render composition, and any audio composition; names such as “Place your logo here” or “Render this” are conventions used by some projects, not universal After Effects labels. Before relying on it, check the specific listing for compatible After Effects version, required plug-ins, included fonts, actual editability, supported aspect ratios, transparency options, documentation, and commercial-use terms. Marketplace subscriptions and licenses vary by item and intended use, so consult the vendor’s current terms before client delivery. Do not assume a downloaded project grants unlimited rights to every use of the rendered logo.

Preview, export, and deliver

Let the work area cache before judging motion. A slow preview can result from high-resolution footage, motion blur, complex effects, or third-party plug-ins; it does not by itself mean the final render will be defective. Check the reveal at full speed, logo readability, final hold, edge quality, motion-blur consistency, color, thin-stroke flicker, alternate-format framing, alpha behavior, and audio synchronization.

A common Adobe route is File > Export > Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue. Choose the format for the destination rather than expecting one preset to suit every job. A video with a background can use a standard delivery format; an overlay needs a format and codec that preserve alpha. Social work may need separate horizontal, square, and vertical renders. A web animation may require its own workflow. For a client template, provide the editable .aep, collected project assets, a rendered preview, and any required font or plug-in instructions. See Adobe’s After Effects documentation for current version-specific export guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • Logo edges look pixelated: Check whether the source is a small raster image being enlarged. Use vector artwork when appropriate; for raster artwork, start with sufficient resolution. Verify continuous rasterization for suitable vector layers and inspect the result at final output size.
  • Logo is cut off: Check the placeholder dimensions, anchor point, scale origin, matte coverage, and the framing of the specific aspect-ratio composition.
  • Matte fails or disappears on export: Confirm the matte is assigned to the correct layer, enabled for the whole reveal, and set to the intended alpha or luma behavior. Check nested composition dimensions and render the intended composition.
  • Background is black or missing: Verify that the background layer is enabled and inside the frame, that no matte is hiding it, and that you are rendering the correct composition. A transparent export may appear black in a player that does not display alpha.
  • Template opens with missing effects: Check required third-party plug-ins, versions, fonts, and footage. Collect dependencies and either disclose requirements or provide a practical fallback.
  • Colors or audio are wrong: Check centralized color controls and composition settings; inspect audio start, end, and synchronization in the rendered file.

Package the project for someone else

Before delivery, rename important layers and compositions; remove unused tests and hidden experiments; inspect every render composition; and confirm the audio and effects behave as expected. Use File > Dependencies > Collect Files to gather project assets. Reduce Project can help remove unused items, but review the result carefully so needed assets are not discarded. Include a READ_ME_FIRST composition or document covering the supported After Effects version, the logo-replacement steps, fonts and font licensing, plug-ins, footage, audio, output compositions, and any licensing limitations. Open the packaged project and test it before handing it over.

The reliable pattern is simple: preserve the source logo, build a clear reveal with deliberate timing, keep optional details separate, and test the template with different logo shapes and delivery formats. A well-timed, readable animation is more useful—and usually more contemporary—than an overloaded effects stack.
