To set an image to “300 dpi” in Photoshop, open Image > Image Size, enter 300 in Resolution, and set the unit to Pixels/Inch. Turn Resample off if you want to keep the existing pixels; turn it on only if you also need to change the pixel dimensions for a particular print size. Photoshop’s image setting is technically PPI (pixels per inch); DPI refers to the dots a printer lays down.
Before you change the resolution
Check the print provider’s requirements and decide the intended print dimensions. Save a copy of your image first so you can preserve the original. In Photoshop, Image > Image Size shows the image’s pixel dimensions, resolution, and calculated physical size. Adobe recommends 300 PPI for best print quality in many cases, unless the printer or print service specifies another target. Adobe’s print-resolution guidance explains how those measurements relate.
The basic relationship is pixels = inches × PPI. A 300-PPI image that is 2400 × 3000 pixels can print at about 8 × 10 inches at that density. A 300-PPI label alone does not tell you how large an image can print; the pixel dimensions matter.

Method 1: Set 300 PPI without changing the pixels
Use this method when you want to preserve the image data and can accept the print dimensions that result.
- Choose Image > Image Size.
- Set the resolution unit to Pixels/Inch, if needed.
- Enter 300 in Resolution.
- Turn Resample off.
- Review the displayed physical width and height, then click OK.
- Save a copy of the file.
With Resample off, the pixel count stays the same. Photoshop changes the resolution assignment and recalculates the physical print size; it does not add or remove pixels. For example, a 4000 × 3000-pixel image at 72 PPI corresponds to about 55.56 × 41.67 inches. At 300 PPI, those same pixels correspond to about 13.33 × 10 inches:

- 4000 ÷ 300 = 13.33 inches
- 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 inches
The image has not gained detail. Its existing pixels are assigned to a smaller print area at a higher density. This is usually the right option when a printer requests a 300-PPI file but does not require a different physical size. See Adobe’s instructions for changing print dimensions and resolution.

Method 2: Set 300 PPI for a specific print size
If you must deliver both a particular physical size and a particular resolution, Photoshop may need to change the pixel dimensions. In Image > Image Size, turn Resample on, enter the required width and height in inches (or the unit your provider requires), and set Resolution to 300 Pixels/Inch. Keep the width-to-height link enabled to maintain proportions. Check the resulting pixel dimensions before clicking OK.

An 8 × 10-inch print at 300 PPI needs approximately 2400 × 3000 pixels. Calculate other sizes with:
- Required pixel width = print width in inches × 300
- Required pixel height = print height in inches × 300
| Print size | Approximate pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in | 1200 × 1800 px |
| 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 px |
| 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 px |
| 11 × 14 in | 3300 × 4200 px |
| 12 × 18 in | 3600 × 5400 px |
These figures assume the image’s aspect ratio matches the print. If it does not, do not force the width and height independently: that stretches or compresses the image. Crop to the target ratio, accept a different print size, or add borders. Photoshop’s image resizing guidance covers the aspect-ratio control.

What Resample changes
When Resample is off, Photoshop preserves the pixel dimensions. Raising PPI makes the calculated print size smaller; lowering PPI makes it larger. When Resample is on, Photoshop adds or removes pixels to satisfy the dimensions and resolution you enter. Reducing dimensions discards pixels; enlarging interpolates new ones. Interpolated pixels can make an image fit a larger print specification, but they cannot restore detail missing from a small, blurry, or compressed source. Adobe explains the relationship between pixel dimensions, PPI, and resampling.

Start with Automatic for most images. If you are enlarging and the result needs improvement, try Preserve Details 2.0 and inspect the result rather than assuming it will fix the source. For reduction, Bicubic Sharper is a useful option. Nearest Neighbor suits pixel art and hard-edged graphics where crisp blocks matter. Bicubic and Bicubic Smoother are other choices for tonal images and enlargement. The best-looking result depends on the source; check it at 100% magnification, and apply modest sharpening after resizing only if needed. Adobe’s resampling options reference describes the available methods.

Check the result and prepare the file
- In Image > Image Size, confirm the resolution, pixel dimensions, and intended physical dimensions.
- Inspect the image at 100% for softness, halos, blockiness, or other artifacts after resampling.
- Use View > Print Size for an approximate on-screen preview. Its apparent size depends on your monitor, so rely on the dimensions and pixel calculations for the actual specification. Adobe documents the print-size preview.
- Keep a layered PSD or TIFF if you need an editable working file. Export a separate flattened JPEG or TIFF if that is what the provider requests.
- Follow the provider’s instructions for color profile, bleed, format, compression, and file-size limits. A 300-PPI setting does not meet every production requirement by itself.
If you still need more usable detail, look for the original full-resolution file, rescan or rephotograph the source, choose a smaller print, or ask the provider whether a lower PPI is acceptable for the intended viewing distance. Large-format prints are not automatically required to be 300 PPI; the suitable resolution depends on the output and viewing conditions. Also, a layout or print dialog can scale an image after you set its Photoshop dimensions, so the final effective PPI may differ. Adobe’s printing guide describes scaling in Photoshop’s Print dialog.
Why “300 dpi” and “300 PPI” differ
People commonly say “300 dpi” when preparing an image for print, but Photoshop’s Resolution field measures pixels per inch (PPI)—the image pixels assigned to each inch of printed output. DPI technically describes printer dots. If a provider asks for 300 dpi, it usually means the supplied image should be 300 PPI at its final size; follow its exact specifications if it defines a different workflow. Changing an image to 300 PPI does not by itself improve screen display or create photographic detail.
