Mother’s Favorite is a 12-inch quilt block made from dark blue, blue, and white prints. The American Patchwork & Quilting pattern combines pieced triangle-square units, eight Flying Geese, and a blue center square; its cutting list and assembly sequence are below.

Pattern overview

The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors published this block pattern on April 15, 2019. It specifies a finished block measuring 12 inches square and uses scraps in three colors: dark blue print, blue print, and white print. The pattern does not name required fabric collections or brands, and it does not give a historical origin or alternate name for the block.

What to cut

The following measurements are for the pattern’s 12-inch version. Cut the listed pieces from quilting cotton in the three prints:

Fabric Cutting list
Dark blue print Two 4-7/8-inch squares, cut diagonally into four large triangles; one 4-1/2-inch square; and two 2-7/8-inch squares, cut diagonally into four small triangles.
Blue print Four 2-1/2 × 4-1/2-inch rectangles and eight 2-1/2-inch squares.
White print Four 2-1/2 × 4-1/2-inch rectangles; six 2-7/8-inch squares, cut diagonally into twelve small triangles; and eight 2-1/2-inch squares.

Use a quilting pencil or another fabric-safe marking tool to draw diagonals on the wrong side of the blue and white 2-1/2-inch squares. These markings guide the Flying Geese stitching.

Piece the triangle-square units

Make four small triangle-square units from the small triangles. Each should measure 2-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances. Combine these units to form four pieced large triangles, then join each with a dark-blue large triangle to create four large triangle-square units. Each large unit should measure 4-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances.

Make eight Flying Geese

Use the blue and white squares with the matching rectangles to make eight Flying Geese units. For each unit, place a marked square at an end of a rectangle, stitch on the diagonal mark, trim the excess fabric while leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance, and press the attached triangle open. Repeat at the opposite end with a second marked square. Each completed unit measures 2-1/2 × 4-1/2 inches, including seam allowances.

Assemble the block

  1. Arrange the four large triangle-square units, eight Flying Geese units, and the 4-1/2-inch blue square in three horizontal rows, following the pattern diagram for exact placement.
  2. Join the pieces within each row.
  3. Press the seams in alternating directions from row to row to help the seams nest when the rows are joined.
  4. Join the three rows to complete the block.

Use the source pattern’s diagram to confirm orientation before sewing the rows together; the written construction description identifies the components and row layout, while the diagram shows their placement.
