Row 1 at a glance

American Patchwork & Quilting published Pat Sloan’s pattern on November 24, 2015. It uses fabrics from the Hometown Girl Batiks collection by Pat Sloan for Moda Fabrics. The pattern specifies five blocks, each measuring 12½ inches square before finishing and 12 inches square after assembly; joined together, they form a finished 12-by-60-inch row. See the publisher’s Row 1 pattern.

Row 1 is part of a six-row quilt. In the complete layout, Row 2 is repeated three times for continuity. The full quilt project also calls for binding, backing, and batting; the list below covers Row 1 only. View the publisher’s full project overview.

Fabric and cutting list

The pattern’s cutting plan assumes 42 inches of usable fabric width and includes ¼-inch seam allowances. It directs you to sew right sides together unless otherwise stated.

How the blocks are constructed

Mark and sew the corner squares

Use a pencil or chalk pencil to mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2-inch navy and red square. The pattern uses these marked squares at the corners of larger squares, rectangles, and background squares. Sew them in place as directed, trim the seam allowances to ¼ inch, and press the resulting triangles open.

Assemble the five blocks

Arrange the units around the aqua and multicolor centers to make three blue blocks and two red blocks. Follow the pattern’s specified orientation for the red blocks when putting the row together; their rotation is part of the design.

Join the row

Assemble the blocks into one strip. Each block should measure 12½ inches square before finishing, including seam allowances. The completed row measures 12 by 60 inches after finishing.

Check the finished dimensions

  • Five blocks in the row
  • Each block: 12½ inches unfinished, 12 inches finished
  • Row: 12 by 60 inches finished
