Nano Banana 2 is Google’s public name for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, an image-generation and editing model designed to balance quality, speed, flexibility, and cost. It can create images from text, edit uploaded artwork through conversation, work with reference images, render more legible text, and produce formats ranging from compact portraits to extremely wide banners.
It is not a separate standalone app. You can access it through Gemini, Google AI Studio, or the Gemini API. For most creative exploration and routine image editing, Nano Banana 2 is the balanced choice; Nano Banana 2 Lite favors volume and low cost, while Nano Banana Pro is better suited to unusually complex or brand-critical work.

Nano Banana 2 is the consumer-facing name associated with Google’s gemini-3.1-flash-image model, also called Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Google positions it as a faster, more efficient general-purpose alternative to Nano Banana Pro rather than as an entirely new category of image tool.

The model supports both image generation and editing. You can describe a new scene, upload an existing image, combine references, or continue refining a result with follow-up instructions. Google’s API documentation lists text and image/PDF inputs and image and text outputs. The model also supports thinking on or off, depending on the workflow and interface.
As of the August 18, 2026 publication-status reference date, Google lists the model as generally available. Access, controls, quotas, pricing, and regional availability can still differ between Gemini, AI Studio, the API, and individual accounts.

What its advanced image tools actually do
Conversational image editing
Nano Banana 2 is built for multi-turn editing rather than one-shot prompting alone. You can ask it to replace a background, change lighting or clothing, remove an object, reframe an image, translate text, or combine several reference images.
For example, an illustrator might upload a character sheet and request a new scene while preserving the character’s clothing and color palette. A marketer might turn a square campaign image into a vertical story asset. A painter could explore alternate backgrounds, lighting conditions, or compositions without repainting every variation manually.
Make one major change at a time. After each edit, inspect faces, hands, logos, object shapes, and text. Multi-turn editing can gradually introduce unwanted changes even when the first result looks correct.
Improved text inside images
Google promotes Nano Banana 2 for more legible text in posters, greeting cards, packaging concepts, diagrams, educational graphics, and social-media designs. This is a meaningful improvement over many earlier image generators, but it is not dependable typography software.
Short, prominent wording is generally a safer use than dense copy. Long paragraphs, small labels, unusual names, tables, trademarks, and exact legal language still need inspection and often manual replacement in a design application. For important layouts, generate the artwork first and add final typography separately.

Reference images and visual consistency
The model can use multiple reference images to guide subjects, products, characters, colors, or visual style. It is designed to improve consistency across a sequence, but Google warns that character consistency may still fail.
Consistency is more likely when you:
- Use the same strongest reference images in each request.
- Give every character or object a clear name.
- Repeat stable attributes such as clothing, colors, markings, and proportions.
- Specify the exact number of people or objects.
- Make one focused edit per turn.
- Avoid contradictory style instructions.
Even with these precautions, small changes to facial features, hands, product geometry, and clothing should be expected.
Web-informed generation
Where supported, Nano Banana 2 can use text and image search results to inform generated visuals. This can help with landmarks, geographic subjects, educational illustrations, historical references, and real-world objects.
Search grounding is reference assistance, not fact certification. A generated landmark, map, scientific diagram, product detail, or historical scene can still contain invented or outdated information. Verify anything educational, technical, geographic, or commercially significant.
Resolutions and aspect ratios
The API documentation lists output options of 0.5K, 1K, 2K, and 4K, with 1K documented as the default. It also lists standard and custom aspect-ratio support, including very wide and very tall formats:

That range makes the model useful for social posts, portraits, thumbnails, presentation visuals, banners, cinematic layouts, and long vertical designs. However, API capability is not the same as interface availability. Gemini or AI Studio may expose fewer controls, and available resolutions can depend on the account, plan, endpoint, and current rollout.
Practical creative uses
Social-media artwork
Create a master concept, then ask for platform-specific reframing rather than stretching one image across every format. Request the subject’s position, negative space, crop, and intended ratio explicitly.
Marketing mockups
Nano Banana 2 is useful for exploring campaign directions, posters, packaging concepts, landing-page visuals, and promotional scenes. Treat these as concepts until product details, copy, trademarks, disclosures, and brand rules have been checked manually.
Product photography concepts
Upload a product reference and experiment with backgrounds, props, lighting, and camera angles. Generated imagery should not be treated as an exact representation of the product unless the final image is compared carefully with the real item.
Storyboards and character development
Use stable reference images, name each character, and generate one frame at a time. Record approved prompts and references so that successful visual decisions can be repeated.
Educational diagrams
Search-informed generation can help visualize an idea, but technical labels, measurements, scientific claims, and diagrams require subject-matter review.

Translation and localization
Nano Banana 2 can help adapt visual assets into other languages. Have a native speaker review the translation, punctuation, line breaks, tone, and cultural suitability before publishing.
Restoration and reframing
Use instructions such as “preserve everything except the background” to clean up or recompose an image. Keep the original file and compare both versions for altered faces, logos, hands, textures, and fine details.
How to use Nano Banana 2
Gemini or Google AI Studio
- Open Gemini or Google AI Studio.
- Select an image-generation-capable model or mode.
- Describe the subject, composition, setting, lighting, style, aspect ratio, text, and constraints.
- Upload one or more reference images when needed.
- Generate the image and inspect the result.
- Request one targeted edit at a time.
- Download the result and retain the prompt and source references.
Interface labels change, so follow the current controls shown in your account rather than assuming that every documented API option appears in the consumer interface.
Prompt template
Create a [type of image] showing [main subject] in [setting].

Choose Nano Banana 2 when you need a balance of speed, quality, cost, editing, and reference-image support. Choose Lite when throughput matters more than complex continuity. Choose Pro when the asset demands more complex reasoning, localization, brand fidelity, or control and a slower or more expensive workflow is acceptable. - Wrong text: Shorten the wording, enlarge it, or create the art and typography separately.
- Character drift: Re-upload the best reference, restate stable traits, and make one edit per turn.
- Extra objects or people: State exact counts and explicitly request removal of duplicates.
- Incorrect landmark or product: Provide a trusted reference image and verify the result manually.
- Poor composition: Specify viewpoint, lens impression, subject position, crop, and negative space.
- Wrong ratio: State the ratio near the beginning and end of the prompt, then use the interface control when available.
- Over-editing: Ask the model to preserve everything except one named change.
- Unsafe output: Revise the request toward a safe, neutral subject rather than attempting to bypass safeguards.
Limitations, privacy, and commercial use
Nano Banana 2 is powerful creative assistance, not a replacement for final design judgment. Professional workflows still need typography cleanup, layout work, retouching, color management, accessibility review, brand approval, and fact checking.

Before using an output commercially, review Google’s current terms, local law, trademark restrictions, privacy requirements, and the rights attached to every uploaded reference. Do not assume that every generated image is automatically cleared for every commercial purpose.
Be cautious with confidential client assets, unreleased products, private people’s photographs, and personal information. Upload them only when your organization’s data policy permits it. Google states that images created with Nano Banana 2 include an invisible SynthID watermark intended to identify AI-generated content. SynthID is not a visible watermark and should not be treated as an absolute provenance guarantee.
Direct Google access or a third-party interface?
Gemini is the simplest route for nontechnical creators. AI Studio is better for prompt experiments and model testing. The Gemini API is the appropriate route for applications, batch workflows, internal tools, and automated creative systems.
Third-party platforms may add model selectors, presets, histories, credit systems, and specialized editing interfaces. For example, ImagineArt documents Nano Banana 2 editing workflows, while StoryShort lists it alongside other image models. Other services such as Banana AI and NanoMaker offer multi-model access.
A wrapper can be convenient, but its pricing, credits, retention policy, upload handling, model version, limits, and commercial terms are not automatically the same as Google’s. Direct Google access is preferable when account control, API transparency, or data governance matters most.
Bottom line
Nano Banana 2 is best understood as Google’s fast, general-purpose image model—not as a separate app and not as a guarantee of perfect text, factual accuracy, or character continuity. It is a strong default for ideation, conversational editing, social assets, mockups, reference-led exploration, and production-support work. Use Nano Banana 2 Lite for simple high-volume generation and Nano Banana Pro for the most demanding visual tasks. In every case, inspect the final image before publishing.
