The New Matter MOD-t was built to make basic 3D printing less intimidating: it paired automatic tray centering with a browser-based workflow and Wi-Fi. Its limits are just as important: a small build area, PLA-only specifications, restrained software controls, and mixed reviewer reports on print quality and reliability. It is best understood as a legacy entry-level printer for learning and simple experiments—not as a current, supported precision-printing system.
What the MOD-t is—and who it suited
The MOD-t is a fused-filament fabrication (FFF) printer that melts filament and lays it down in successive layers. New Matter positioned it as an approachable home printer, with a simplified interface intended to reduce setup and software friction. The historical launch price was $399, announced by New Matter on Jan. 4, 2016; that figure is not evidence of its present-day price or availability. The announcement also reported that the company’s 2014 Indiegogo campaign had raised more than $680,000 from over 2,500 supporters.

Its original proposition makes the most sense for someone learning the basics, printing modest PLA objects, or trying quick experiments. It is a less convincing fit for users who need a large work area, fine surface finish, extensive slicer controls, or dependable production. The manual and contemporary reviews describe the printer’s original design; they do not establish that its store, support, or parts are available now.
Specifications and practical limits
| Specification | MOD-t detail |
|---|---|
| Printing method | Fused-filament fabrication |
| Build volume | 150 × 100 × 125 mm (6 × 4 × 5 in) |
| Layer resolution | Selectable 0.1–0.4 mm |
| Nozzle | 0.4 mm |
| Maximum listed speed | Up to 80 mm/s; this is the manual’s specification, not a guarantee of real-world print speed |
| Filament | 1.75 mm PLA, with a listed print temperature of 190–220 °C |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and USB 2.0 |
| File formats | STL and OBJ |
| Power | 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 75 W |
These figures come from the MOD-t user manual. Its modest 150 × 100 × 125 mm envelope rules out many larger objects or multiple-part jobs that could fit on a more spacious machine. The manual specifies PLA; neither it nor the cited reviews establish compatibility with other materials. Digital Trends also describes the MOD-t as having no heated bed and a removable flexible plate, details that matter when considering material and print-removal expectations.

How the original workflow worked
The printer’s user-friendly pitch relied on a connected software path. The manual describes the New Matter Store, accessed through a supported desktop or mobile browser, as the primary interface. Wi-Fi was required for that browser workflow. The companion utility app was intended to configure wireless settings, update firmware over USB, provide offline access, and send prepared G-code generated with suitably configured third-party software.
Automatic tray centering and calibration reduced one common setup burden, but did not mean there was nothing to learn. In HotHardware’s Aug. 5, 2016 review, the reviewer found Wi-Fi and software setup intuitive and completed them in under ten minutes; filament loading was the confusing step and required a help video. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a promised setup time for every user or machine.

The simplified web interface also traded control for approachability. Digital Trends reported in its Aug. 23, 2019 review that the interface lacked advanced settings such as infill, extrusion speed, and support controls. More advanced users could use a separate G-code route, but that required working outside the straightforward store workflow.
Print quality, speed, and reliability in reviews
Independent assessments were mixed, and their observations should be read as individual reviews rather than controlled or universal results.

Users can print directly from the app or slice models from online platforms, making it easy to adapt to different learning and creative workflows.
- 【Self-Cleaning Nozzle & Easy Maintenance】Flexible magnetic build plate allows easy model removal with a simple bend. The improved nozzle design enhances print consistency, while the quick-swap printhead structure makes maintenance simple even for first-time users, reducing downtime and failed prints.
- 【Auto Leveling & Easy Printing】Intelligent auto-leveling reduces manual bed adjustment and helps ensure better first-layer adhesion. Combined with power-loss recovery, the printer helps users continue prints after interruptions, improving success rate and reducing material waste.
- Digital Trends, Aug. 23, 2019: praised affordability and simple operation but concluded that reliability was too poor to recommend. The review cites a moving build plate that could ruin prints, along with middling resolution and speed.
- TechCrunch, Dec. 14, 2016: described the prints as grainy and relatively rough, and considered the printer better suited to experiments than high-resolution modeling or casting. The reviewer found setup and the web workflow simple, while also noting limited functionality.
- HotHardware, Aug. 5, 2016: reported intuitive setup, while identifying filament loading as the trickiest part of the process.
The contrast is useful: ease of starting a print does not guarantee consistent results, and selectable layer resolution is not the same as demonstrated surface quality. Steve Schell, New Matter’s CEO and co-founder, said at launch, “We have created a 3D printing experience that everyone can enjoy.” That describes the company’s aim, not an independent finding about output or reliability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a MOD-t still a sensible buy?
The available evidence supports a historical assessment of the MOD-t, not a current buying recommendation. In a June 2026 Reddit owner discussion, one participant reported still using the printer with Cura, while another reported that the online service was no longer available to them. These are anecdotal owner reports; they do not confirm an official shutdown date, the condition for all owners, present official support, or access to replacement parts.

For a used unit, the practical decision therefore depends on the specific machine and whether its owner can operate it without relying on the original online service. Before committing, establish that it powers on, connects or can be used through an offline workflow, loads filament, and completes a test print with a stable plate. Confirm that you can obtain the specified 1.75 mm PLA and any parts the particular unit needs. The cited sources do not verify current stock, used-market pricing, a compatible replacement plate, or an active official support channel.
IEEE Spectrum’s comparative coverage places the MOD-t in the home/classroom category and discusses the appeal and limits of easy-to-use printers for families and educators. That period framing is not a current comparison against printers on sale today. Its practical legacy is narrower: a compact PLA machine whose automatic centering and guided workflow tried to make first steps easier, with compromises in capacity, control, output, and confidence in continued use.
