A newborn baby wall hanging is nursery décor or a personalized keepsake—not something to place over or inside an infant’s sleep space. Popular formats include name banners, fabric hangings, garlands, felt décor, and birth-announcement signs. Choose one for the wall, then hang it well away from the crib.
What counts as a newborn baby wall hanging?
The phrase covers several kinds of nursery decoration, rather than one specific product. Marketplace listings use terms such as “baby name banner,” “nursery wall decor,” “newborn birth announcement,” and “baby wall hanging”; these are examples of listing language, not search-volume rankings. Examples include personalized banners and birth-announcement signs on Etsy’s baby name banner listings and Amazon’s baby wall hanging listings.
- Name banners: Display the baby’s first name or initials, often in fabric or felt.
- Birth-announcement hangings: Showcase details such as a name or birth date.
- Garlands and felt décor: Add shapes, colors, or a theme to a nursery wall.
- Fabric hangings: Offer a soft-textured decorative accent.
How to choose a wall hanging
Compare the item as nursery décor or a gift, and decide where it will be displayed before choosing a size or hanging method.

- Personalization: Check spelling, lettering, and which details the maker can include.
- Material and hanging method: Consider the fabric or other material and how the item attaches to the wall.
- Size and style: Match the piece to the wall and the nursery’s colors without letting the design dictate unsafe placement.
- Display location: Choose a wall away from the crib and other infant sleep spaces.
Where to hang it safely
Hang wall décor away from the crib, bassinet, or play yard. HealthyChildren.org advises limiting decorations over a crib to painted walls or wallpaper; frames and mirrors above it could fall and injure a child. Health Canada also warns that wall décor can fall into the sleep space or be pulled down as a baby learns to stand or climb.

Keep the sleep space bare except for a fitted sheet, and use a product intended for infant sleep. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s safe-sleep guidance does not support placing decorative hangings in the crib or bassinet.
How a mobile differs from wall décor
A mobile is a hanging toy, not ordinary wall art. HealthyChildren.org advises securely attaching it to the crib’s side rails, wall, or ceiling, and hanging it high enough that the baby cannot reach it. Remove it once the baby can sit up. This mobile guidance does not make a wall hanging above the crib a safe choice.
