This baby quilt tutorial uses 80 snowball blocks arranged eight across by ten rows. Each block starts with one 4½-inch square and four 1½-inch corner squares. Sew along the marked diagonals, trim and press the corners, then join the blocks and finish the quilt with borders, batting, backing and binding.

#1 Best Overall

In American Patchwork & Quilting’s “Baby Quilt: Show Me How”, published October 13, 2016, presenter Linda Augsburg demonstrates a scrappy quilt inspired by Julie Hendricksen’s “So Many Snowballs.” The instructions below follow the tutorial’s cutting and assembly sequence.

What you need

  • 80 squares cut 4½ inches
  • 320 squares cut 1½ inches
  • Four border strips, each 4½ inches wide and cut to the fabric’s width
  • Binding strips cut 2½ inches wide; Augsburg cuts five strips to allow extra wiggle room
  • Backing fabric and batting

For the sample’s scrappy look, Augsburg used ten fabrics for the larger squares and five coordinating prints for the small squares. Those are her fabric choices, not requirements. The tutorial does not specify total yardage, finished quilt dimensions, or a particular batting type.

Make the snowball blocks

Prepare the corner squares

  1. On the wrong side of each 1½-inch square, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.
  2. Place four marked squares at the corners of one 4½-inch square, with the marked lines positioned for sewing across each corner.

Sew, trim and press

  1. Sew directly on each marked diagonal line to attach the corner squares.
  2. Trim the excess fabric at each corner, leaving a quarter-inch seam allowance.
  3. Press the corner triangles back to form the snowball block’s clipped corners.
  4. Trim the block to 4¼ inches square if needed.

To chain piece, sew one side across a run of large squares, then sew the opposite side. Trim the units apart, rotate them, and sew the remaining two corners. This is an efficiency option shown in the tutorial; it does not change the block construction.

Assemble and finish the quilt

  1. Arrange the 80 blocks in eight columns across and ten rows.
  2. Sew the blocks together to make the quilt center.
  3. Add the four 4½-inch border strips.
  4. Layer the top with backing and batting, quilt the layers, and bind the edges with the 2½-inch binding strips.

The tutorial does not give a finished-size measurement or a complete yardage chart. Calculate fabric needs for your own project based on your chosen fabric widths and layout rather than treating the block count as a finished dimension.
