Fusible web is a heat-activated adhesive used between fabric layers, or between fabric and some porous materials. Choose it based on whether you need a permanent no-sew bond, a sewable appliqué, repositioning before final fusing, or a product suited to a particular fabric weight or stretch. Test a scrap and follow the exact product instructions: heat, steam, time, and pressure vary by product.

What is fusible web?

Fusible web is an adhesive material that bonds surfaces when activated with heat. Some products have a paper backing that helps with tracing, cutting, positioning, and fusing; others, such as Pellon 807 Wonder-Web, are unsupported webs placed between layers.

“No-sew” and “sewable” are different use cases. Therm O Web describes HeatnBond UltraHold as a permanent adhesive for no-sew fabric bonding. Pellon lists Wonder-Under for uses including appliqués, facings, hems, and trims. Check the particular product’s current package directions before sewing through it or using it without stitching.

Which fusible web should you choose?

Project need Product option What the manufacturer describes Keep in mind
Permanent bond without sewing HeatnBond UltraHold Therm O Web describes it as a permanent adhesive for no-sew fabric bonding. “Stronger” is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent comparison; a strong bond is not always best for a soft or flexible project.
Appliqué, facings, hems, or trims Pellon Wonder-Under Pellon lists these among its uses. Use current package directions; the older product listing does not replace them.
Medium-to-heavy fabric, including denim Heavy-Duty Wonder-Under Pellon describes this version for medium-to-heavy fabrics and mentions denim. Test the actual fabric and intended finish.
Repositioning before final fusing Pellon EZ-Steam II or Warm Company Steam-A-Seam 2 Both describe temporary placement followed by permanent fusing. Follow the named product’s instructions and fabric temperature limits.
Stretch fabric HeatnBond Soft Stretch Therm O Web describes it as a web intended for stretch fabric. Confirm suitability for your fabric and project with current directions.
Web without paper backing Pellon 807 Wonder-Web Pellon describes it as an unsupported web placed between layers. Its application directions are product-specific.

How to choose

Start with the job, not a general claim that one adhesive is “best.” Decide whether the piece must stay bonded without stitching, whether you will sew the appliqué, whether you need to reposition it before fusing, and whether the fabric is heavy or stretchy. Also consider the finished project’s care: washability depends on the specific web and the fabric.

Therm O Web describes UltraHold as a permanent no-sew adhesive and says it is stronger than traditional fusible webs. Treat that as the manufacturer’s claim, not as a universal ranking. For a project that needs a softer hand or more flexibility, the strongest adhesive may not be the right choice.

How to apply fusible web

  1. Read the exact product directions. Temperature, steam, pressing time, pressure, and application sequence are not interchangeable across brands or products.
  2. Test a scrap. Use the actual fabric and web combination. Check the bond and look for changes to the fabric before starting the finished project.
  3. Prepare the fabric as directed. Pellon recommends pretesting, and its 807 instructions recommend prewashing to remove coatings that could interfere with fusing. Follow the selected product’s instructions.
  4. Position and fuse the web. For paper-backed products, follow the package sequence for fusing, peeling the liner, and applying the second material. Pellon advises starting at a corner or scoring a narrow point if the backing is difficult to peel.
  5. Use a press cloth when directed. Pellon advises using one to protect the iron from adhesive. Keep adhesive away from the iron unless the selected product’s instructions specifically say otherwise.
  6. Let the bond cool and follow care directions. Do not assume every fusible web has the same washing, drying, or dry-cleaning tolerance.

Specific directions for Pellon 807 Wonder-Web

Pellon’s 807 instruction sheet calls for a steam iron with a metal soleplate, a Wool/Steam setting, and a damp press cloth. Place the web between the layers, press firmly for 10 seconds without sliding, and repeat with slightly overlapping placements. Let the work cool, then press the other side to remove excess moisture. These are instructions for Pellon 807 Wonder-Web, not general directions for other fusible webs.

Washing and removing fusible web

There is no single wash promise for all fusible webs. For example, Pellon EZ-Steam II lists machine washing on a warm delicate cycle and low drying or dry cleaning; Pellon Clear-Fuse says finished items may be washed and dried according to the fabric’s requirements; and Warm Company says Steam-A-Seam 2 projects may be machine washed and dried without fabric softener. Check the named product’s current directions, and remember that the fabric itself also limits care.

Common questions to consider before buying

If you are asking, “What’s the best fusible web for raw-edge appliqué?”, first decide whether you want a permanent no-sew finish or plan to stitch around the appliqué. For no-sew bonding, Therm O Web describes UltraHold for that purpose; for appliqué uses, Pellon lists Wonder-Under. Match the product to the fabric and follow its directions.

If you are confused about fusible web, web interfacing, and hemming products, check the product category and its stated use rather than assuming the terms mean the same thing. Instructions for fusible interfacing do not automatically apply to fusible web: for example, Therm O Web’s 10–15-second directions in the dossier are for its named interfacing products, not a universal web instruction.
