ChatGPT Images 2.0, introduced by OpenAI in April 2026, brought stronger instruction following, text-heavy designs, and a reasoning-assisted “images with thinking” mode. It is no longer the latest ChatGPT Images experience: OpenAI’s September 2026 materials describe Images 2.5 as the newer version. ChatGPT Images can create images from prompts and edit generated or uploaded images, but results still need review for accuracy, text, rights, and safety.

For developers, API image models are a separate access path from the ChatGPT interface. The OpenAI sources reviewed here do not establish current API model availability, pricing, or limits, so check the live developer documentation before planning an integration.
What OpenAI’s AI image generator does
ChatGPT Images accepts a visual request in ordinary language and returns an image that can be revised in the conversation. You can ask it to create an image, upload an existing image for transformation, or select an area to edit. OpenAI cautions that selections are not always precise and that edits may spill beyond the selected region.
Common uses include:
- Adding or removing an object
- Changing a background, setting, color, material, or lighting
- Restyling an image or using a supplied image as a reference

A useful image needs more than an attractive appearance: a poster needs readable hierarchy, a diagram needs correct relationships, and a product image needs to represent the product truthfully.
Instruction following and typography
OpenAI presents its newer image experience as better at following detailed instructions and handling text and complex visual layouts. Those are product claims, not independent performance-test results. Generated text can still contain mistakes, so inspect every word, number, and line break before publishing.

- Keep the character design and clothing. Change the setting to a rainy urban street but retain the three-quarter view.
OpenAI’s Help Center notes that an edit can extend beyond a selected area. After a localized edit, inspect nearby edges, text, faces, hands, product details, and background continuity.
How to write an effective image prompt
Describe the image’s purpose, subject, action, setting, style, composition, lighting, and important constraints. A focused prompt is easier to refine than one with contradictory instructions.
A practical prompt structure is:
- Purpose: Explain what the image is for and who will see it.
- Subject: Identify the person, object, scene, or idea that should receive attention.
- Action or state: Say what is happening or how the subject should be arranged.
- Setting: Give the location and relevant background details.
- Visual direction: Describe the medium, mood, palette, materials, or design language.
- Composition: Specify framing, viewpoint, focal point, negative space, and orientation.
- Required text: Supply exact wording and identify it as text that must appear.
- Constraints: State what must remain unchanged and any format or brand requirements.
Example: a painting concept
A vague request might be: Make a beautiful landscape painting.
A more specific version is: Create a square concept image for a contemporary landscape painting: a lone red canoe pulled onto a dark shoreline beside a misty northern lake at dawn. Use broad visible brushwork, a restrained palette of charcoal, blue-gray, muted ochre, and one saturated red accent. Keep the canoe as the focal point, place it in the lower-right third, and leave quiet open water in the upper half.
Then refine one variable at a time:
- Keep the composition and canoe position, but make the atmosphere brighter.
- Keep the palette, but use a lower viewpoint and make the shoreline more dominant.
- Preserve the lake and canoe, but make a vertical version with more sky above the horizon.
Example: a text-heavy social graphic
Create a vertical social graphic for a beginner watercolor workshop. Use a clean editorial layout with a pale paper background, a loose blue wash along the lower edge, and a simple painted brush illustration on the right. Include the exact headline “BEGINNER WATERCOLOR” and the smaller line “Saturday, 10 AM · Community Art Room.” Keep the text large, high-contrast, and centered in the left two-thirds, with generous margins for mobile viewing.
Proofread the result. If the wording is wrong, request a targeted correction or finish the typography in a design application.
A practical workflow from idea to finished asset
- Define the communication goal. Decide whether the image should explain, sell, teach, illustrate, or help explore an idea.
- Choose the output context. Say whether it is for a square post, vertical graphic, wide banner, flyer, or other format. Current ChatGPT Images documentation describes aspect-ratio choices and templates; check which options are available in your interface.
- Generate a first concept. Start with the subject, purpose, composition, and most important constraints.
- Inspect the result. Check the focal point, proportions, text, factual details, and whether the image works at its intended size.
- Make targeted edits. Ask for a specific change while naming the elements that should stay the same.
- Use references when consistency matters. The current 2.5 announcement describes sketch references, and the Help Center documents editing uploaded images. Explain what each reference is meant to guide.
- Review the final asset outside the chat. Check the actual crop, dimensions, permissions, and provenance before reuse.
- Verify access details before implementation. For API or production use, consult current developer documentation for model access, pricing, limits, and behavior.
Images with thinking: what it adds
Images 2.0 introduced an “images with thinking” mode that can take additional time to plan and refine an image. Its system card describes reasoning and tool use, including live web-search integration and the ability to generate multiple images from one prompt in some workflows. This is an OpenAI-reported figure, not an independently audited statistic. The same announcement’s improvement and speed statements should be understood as OpenAI product claims, not independent benchmark results.

Using reference images without losing control
Reference images can help when the request depends on a particular subject, palette, sketch, or composition. Give each reference a clear role, and use only images you have permission to upload and transform, especially when they show a recognizable person, client work, private material, or protected brand asset.
The Images 2.5 announcement describes sketch-based references and comments placed on images for more focused editing. OpenAI says the newer experience better preserves reference-photo subjects and follows multi-turn edits more reliably; those are vendor claims, not independently tested findings. Check the current interface and Help Center for feature availability.
Access, devices, and practical considerations
The OpenAI Help Center says ChatGPT Images is available on all ChatGPT tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. Availability and rollout can change, so consult the current Help Center article. Image generation can take a few minutes depending on prompt complexity, according to that documentation.
API use is a separate matter from a ChatGPT subscription. The dossier does not verify current API model names, pricing, endpoints, or usage limits. Check current developer documentation before building an application or assuming an existing integration will work unchanged.

- Typography: Proofread every word, number, and line break.
- Composition: Confirm the focal point survives the required crop.
- Geometry: Inspect hands, faces, tools, furniture, architecture, and repeated objects.
- Identity and products: Verify people, packaging, labels, and product details remain accurate.
- Factual content: Check diagrams, maps, statistics, and images that imply real events.
- Output suitability: Check dimensions, aspect ratio, transparency, contrast, and readability in the destination.
The right expectation is accelerated exploration and production assistance, not infallibility. A person remains responsible for the final image, especially when it informs, sells, documents, or represents a real person or organization.

More realistic image generation can increase risks such as misleading depictions of real people, political subjects, or sensitive events. The Images 2.0 system card describes safeguards at prompt, input-image, and generated-output stages. These layers can reduce some risks; they do not guarantee that harmful or misleading outputs are impossible.
Do not use an image to falsely suggest that a person attended an event, endorsed a product, or appeared in a scene. Consider consent, privacy, copyright, trademark, and publicity rights before uploading or publishing images. Generated output is not automatically cleared for every commercial use.

What provenance signals can and cannot tell you
OpenAI’s Images 2.0 system card describes provenance signals including C2PA Content Credentials and SynthID. These can provide information about an image’s origin or handling, but they do not establish that an image is truthful or that every right has been cleared. Metadata can be removed, and the absence of a visible label does not prove an image is human-made. Preserve available provenance information and disclose AI involvement when your audience, client, platform, or policy requires it.
A sensible workflow for painters and visual creators
For artists, a constructive use is often upstream of the finished work: generate composition directions, compare lighting or palette options, or turn a written idea into a visual reference for discussion. Then make the artistic decisions yourself.
- Write a short statement describing the mood, subject, format, and intended viewer response.
- Generate a few composition studies with different focal placements.
- Request focused changes to value structure, weather, viewpoint, or negative space.
- Choose a direction and translate it into your own sketch, color study, or painted work.
- Keep prompts and references as process documentation if a project may require disclosure.
If you sell, exhibit, teach, or commission work made with AI assistance, follow relevant gallery, client, competition, marketplace, and local requirements.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 was an important April 2026 release, but OpenAI’s current materials describe Images 2.5 as the newer experience.
