OpenAI unveiled DALL·E 3 on September 20, 2023, as the successor to DALL·E 2. Its headline improvements were better adherence to detailed prompts, stronger composition and image quality, closer integration with ChatGPT, and the ability to render more recognizable words inside generated images.

That last feature was important but easy to overstate. DALL·E 3 could create signs, labels, headlines, and poster-like lettering more successfully than earlier text-to-image systems. It did not provide editable text layers, exact typography controls, or guaranteed spelling. In 2026, the DALL·E 3 API is also marked as deprecated, so its importance is primarily historical when evaluating new image-generation projects.
What OpenAI announced
DALL·E 3 was announced on September 20, 2023, as OpenAI’s next-generation text-to-image model. OpenAI positioned it as a major step forward from DALL·E 2 in prompt understanding, visual detail, composition, and the generation of text within images.
The model first appeared as a research preview. OpenAI later announced availability for ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users on October 19, 2023, followed by an API announcement at DevDay on November 6. OpenAI published its DALL·E 3 system card on October 3.

Why text and typography mattered
Earlier image-generation systems often ignored requested words or produced convincing-looking gibberish. They could create the appearance of a poster or storefront sign, but the lettering was frequently misspelled, incomplete, or unrelated to the prompt.

DALL·E 3 improved the connection between the prompt and the visible content of the image. A user could ask for a travel poster with a particular headline, a product package with a label, or a sign containing a short phrase, and the model was more likely to attempt the requested words.
That made the model useful for:
- Poster and advertising concepts
- Packaging mockups
- Social-media graphics
- Storyboards and illustrated scenes
- Concept art containing signs, labels, or captions
- Early visual exploration for designers and marketers
However, “support for typography” meant that lettering could be generated as part of a raster image. It did not mean DALL·E 3 was a typesetting application.

What DALL·E 3 could not do
DALL·E 3 did not offer font menus, editable text layers, vector paths, kerning controls, tracking, baseline grids, or guaranteed spelling. The generated letters were baked into the image rather than delivered as independently editable design elements.
OpenAI’s own DALL·E 3 research paper documents text-rendering failures including missing and extra characters. In practice, users could encounter:
- Misspelled words
- Duplicated or missing letters
- Approximate lettering instead of the requested copy
- Decorative text that looked plausible but was semantically wrong
- Inconsistent results across retries
- Poor readability at small sizes
- Difficulty rendering long phrases or dense copy
For a final logo, legal disclaimer, product label, menu, or regulated advertisement, the safe workflow remained to generate the visual concept and rebuild or replace the lettering in Illustrator, Photoshop, or another design application.

Better prompt following through ChatGPT
OpenAI said DALL·E 3 was trained with an improved image-captioning process designed to produce more informative captions for training images. The stated goal was better understanding of long, nuanced descriptions rather than relying on short collections of keywords.
Its integration with ChatGPT also changed the user experience. Instead of manually engineering a detailed image prompt, a user could describe an idea conversationally and ask ChatGPT to expand, revise, or clarify it. ChatGPT helped formulate the request; DALL·E 3 generated the image from the resulting prompt.
OpenAI highlighted improved adherence to detailed descriptions, sharper visual detail, more coherent compositions, and better results for hands, faces, landscapes, and portrait-oriented images. These were OpenAI’s stated improvements, not a universal independent ranking against every competing model.
How to prompt text-containing images
Short, prominent text gave the model a better chance of producing a useful result. A practical prompt could look like this:
Create a square vintage travel-poster illustration of a red train crossing a mountain valley. Include the exact headline “EXPLORE THE NORTH” in large, centered, cream-colored uppercase letters at the top. Use a bold condensed sans-serif style, high contrast, and no other words.For the best chance of success:
- Put the exact wording in quotation marks.
- Say whether it is a headline, sign, label, or caption.
- Specify its location, size, color, and contrast.
- Keep the copy short.
- Request large lettering rather than fine print.
- Generate multiple candidates.
- Proofread every character.
- Replace the lettering in design software when accuracy matters.
Even a carefully written prompt cannot guarantee exact spelling or professional typography.

Safety, artist opt-outs, and provenance
DALL·E 3 was launched with safety checks applied to prompts and images. OpenAI described restrictions involving certain violent, adult, and hateful content, as well as measures intended to reduce the generation of public figures. The system also rejected requests to imitate living artists’ styles.
OpenAI said creators could opt out of having their images used to train future image-generation models. It also described research into a provenance classifier intended to identify images generated by DALL·E 3. OpenAI reported more than 99% accuracy on unmodified DALL·E images and more than 95% after certain common modifications, but these were OpenAI’s internal evaluations. The classifier was not presented as definitive proof of an image’s origin or authorship.
These controls could sometimes frustrate users with benign documentary, historical, or satirical requests. A blocked prompt is a policy outcome, not necessarily a failure of the image model, and policy behavior can change over time.

DALL·E 3’s access expanded in stages:
- September 20, 2023: OpenAI unveiled DALL·E 3.
- October 3, 2023: OpenAI published the system card.
- October 19, 2023: OpenAI announced access for ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users.
- November 6, 2023: OpenAI announced DALL·E 3 API availability at DevDay.

Current status in 2026
OpenAI’s current DALL·E 3 API page labels the model deprecated and directs developers toward newer image-generation models. The page still lists historical API prices of $0.04 for a 1024×1024 standard image, $0.08 for standard portrait or landscape images, $0.08 for a 1024×1024 HD image, and $0.12 for HD portrait or landscape images. It also states that free-tier access is not supported.
The fact that DALL·E 3 was once integrated into ChatGPT does not establish that the current ChatGPT image-generation experience uses DALL·E 3. OpenAI has since introduced newer image-generation systems. Developers starting a new project should consult OpenAI’s current image-generation documentation rather than selecting DALL·E 3 solely for its historical text-rendering reputation.

DALL·E 3 was a strong fit for rapid visual ideation, conversational prompting, concept art, mockups, and images where a few visible words improved the composition. It was especially approachable for non-designers who preferred describing an idea in ordinary language.
It was a poor fit for exact brand identity work, professional typesetting, editable vector artwork, long or legally significant copy, precise font matching, deterministic production pipelines, and new high-volume systems that require a currently supported API.
Alternatives for new projects
- Newer OpenAI GPT Image models: Consider these first for current API development, text rendering, editing, and multimodal workflows. Availability and pricing depend on the model and configuration.
- Adobe Firefly: A natural choice for teams already working in Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, or Creative Cloud.
- Canva AI or Magic Studio: Useful for marketers and non-designers who need generation combined with templates, layouts, collaboration, and publishing.
- Ideogram: Worth evaluating when accurate visible lettering is the central requirement, while still checking the output carefully.
- Midjourney: A major artistic image-generation alternative, though it should not be assumed to offer the same conversational ChatGPT workflow.
None of these tools removes the need to proofread generated text or verify rights and suitability for a particular commercial use.
Bottom line
DALL·E 3 was an important 2023 step toward prompt-faithful image generation and more legible text inside generated artwork. Its typography advance was real: it could produce recognizable words in posters, signs, labels, and mockups far more often than many earlier systems. But it did not solve typography, guarantee spelling, or replace professional layout software. In 2026, treat DALL·E 3 as historical context and evaluate newer, currently supported image models for new development work.
