The most common reason a downloaded Clip Studio Paint brush is not visible is that it has been downloaded but not imported. In Clip Studio Paint, open Window > Material > Download, select the material, then drag it into a Sub Tool group or use Add from downloads (also called Add sub tool in some versions).
The 30-second fix
- Open a canvas in Clip Studio Paint.
- Choose Window > Material > Download.
- Select the downloaded Asset.
- Open the Tool or Sub Tool palette and choose the appropriate group.
- Use Add from downloads or Add sub tool, then select the material and choose Add palette. You can also drag the material from the Download folder into the desired Sub Tool group.
Menu names vary by version. If automatic installation is enabled, check the Downloads tool group in the Tool palette as well.

Downloaded is not the same as installed
A Clip Studio Asset passes through two separate states:
- Downloaded: the material exists in Material > Download.
- Installed or imported: the material has been added to a Tool or Sub Tool group and can be selected for drawing.
That is why looking only in the Brush or Sub Tool palette can be misleading. First confirm that the Asset is in the Download folder, then add it to a tool group.

You can also see downloaded materials in the Clip Studio launcher under Manage Materials > Download. However, the launcher is not the drawing application: you generally still need to open Clip Studio Paint and import the brush into a palette. See Clip Studio’s guide to downloaded materials.

Check that the download is actually a brush
Clip Studio Assets contains much more than brushes. An Asset may be an image, 3D object, pose, color set, gradient set, workspace, Auto Action, or another material type. Some can have previews that look like brush resources, but they will not appear in the Brush or Sub Tool palette.
- Open a Material palette through Window > Material.
- Choose Download.
- Select the material.
- Open Show details and check Type.
Only material classified as a tool or sub tool belongs in the brush-import workflow. Use the procedure appropriate to the actual category instead. The official material-type guide explains how to identify these categories.

If the Asset is missing from Material > Download
Work through these checks before reinstalling anything:
- Open the right application: Clip Studio manages Assets and accounts; Clip Studio Paint is the drawing app where tools are installed.
- Check the account: make sure Clip Studio Paint is signed in to the same Clip Studio account used to download the material.
- Confirm the download completed: claiming or viewing an Asset in a browser is not necessarily the same as downloading it into Clip Studio Paint.
- Remove filters: select Downloaded material where available and clear filters that may hide the item.
- Check compatibility: review the Asset’s information page for supported devices, editions, and versions.
- Refresh the app: close and reopen Clip Studio Paint after an incomplete or failed download, then check the Download folder again.
Do not re-download repeatedly until you have confirmed that the material is not already in the folder. Clip Studio’s download-material documentation includes the relevant folder and compatibility checks.
Automatic installation in Clip Studio Paint 4.2.0 and later
Clip Studio Paint Ver. 4.2.0 and later can automatically install certain downloaded materials. This feature is version-, device-, mode-, and material-dependent; it does not mean every Asset brush installs automatically.

To check the setting, open the Material palette, open its palette menu, and look for Auto-install settings or Auto-install downloaded materials. Enable automatic installation for sub tools if the option is available.
Automatically installed brushes may be placed in the Downloads tool group rather than in Pencil, Airbrush, Decoration, Watercolor, or another group you normally use. Expand and select Downloads in the Tool palette before assuming the brush is absent. The version requirement and limitations are documented in Clip Studio’s auto-install guide.

Tablet in Studio Mode
Studio Mode generally follows the desktop workflow: open a canvas, open the Material palette’s Download folder, and add the material to a Sub Tool group using the available add command or drag-and-drop control.

Smartphone or tablet in Simple Mode
- Open a canvas.
- Open the Material palette.
- Open the materials save-folder selector.
- Choose Download.
- Select the brush and add it to the currently selected tool group.
Do not assume that desktop drag-and-drop instructions apply identically to mobile. Some controls, including auto-install settings, require Studio Mode. The exact controls can vary by device and version; see the official device-specific instructions.
Installing a brush from another website
A brush downloaded from a third-party website follows a different process from a Clip Studio Asset. Locate the actual brush file on your device, then import it through the Tool or Sub Tool palette.
.sut: Clip Studio Paint’s documented tool-settings format..abr: Photoshop brush format supported by the documented import workflow..zip: an archive, not usually the brush file itself.
- Extract a ZIP archive first.
- Open the Tool or Sub Tool palette menu and choose Import tool or Import sub tool, depending on the version.
- Select the extracted
.sutor.abrfile. - Alternatively, drag the file into the Tool or Sub Tool palette—not onto the canvas.
These workflows and formats are covered in Clip Studio’s external brush-file instructions and tool import manual. Compatibility still depends on the file, application version, device, and operating system.
If the brush imported but still seems invisible
The brush may be installed successfully but hidden in an unexpected place. Check the following:
- Expand the Downloads tool group.
- Look through other Sub Tool groups, including Pencil, Airbrush, Decoration, and Watercolor.
- Search the Sub Tool list using the material’s actual name; it may differ from the Asset listing.
- Confirm that you selected the newly imported brush rather than a similar default tool.
- Check whether a customized workspace has hidden or rearranged the Tool palette.
- Switch to the relevant tool category and scroll through the complete Sub Tool list.
- Close and reopen Clip Studio Paint if the import followed a failed or incomplete download.
When the brush still cannot be imported
Use the failure type to choose the next step:
- Wrong material type: it is not a brush; use the procedure for its actual category.
- ZIP file rejected: extract the archive and import the brush file inside it.
- File rejected: verify that it is a supported
.sutor.abrfile and check compatibility information. - Nothing appears in Add sub tool: return to Material > Download and confirm that the item’s Type is a tool or sub tool.
- Drag-and-drop fails: drop the file or material onto the Tool/Sub Tool palette, not the open canvas.
- Controls are missing: identify whether you are on desktop, tablet, smartphone, Studio Mode, or Simple Mode; the available commands differ.
Contact official Clip Studio support when a compatible Asset is confirmed in the Download folder but is absent from every import list, or when an extracted compatible file is consistently rejected even in a fresh or otherwise supported workspace.
