Paint 3D is no longer available as a normal Microsoft Store download for Windows 11. Microsoft deprecated the app in August 2024 and removed it from the Store on November 4, 2024. If Paint 3D is already installed, it is expected to continue working, but Microsoft is not providing future updates or an official reinstall route.
The only practical way to install it on a new Windows 11 system is an unofficial archival download of the latest available .AppxBundle package, followed by installation with Windows App Installer or PowerShell. This guide explains that process, the security checks to perform, common errors, and how to use Paint 3D once it is installed.
What happened to Paint 3D on Windows 11?
Paint 3D was included on some Windows 10 devices, but it was not preinstalled on Windows 11 devices. Microsoft deprecated Paint 3D in August 2024 and removed it from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. Microsoft’s current deprecated-features guidance confirms that the app is no longer distributed through the Store and will not receive future app updates.

Where to download Paint 3D now
There is no current official Microsoft download page for a fresh Paint 3D installation. The remaining practical source is the Paint3DArchive project, which lists archived Paint 3D release packages and links to their GitHub releases.

2024.2410.13017.0.AppxBundle
Use the archive’s entry for 2024.2410.13017.0 and follow its GitHub release link to download the AppxBundle. Treat this as an unofficial archival download, not as a current Microsoft installer. Paint3DArchive says that its files were obtained from Microsoft servers and retain Microsoft digital signatures, but the archive itself is not operated by Microsoft.
Before downloading: an important security check
An AppxBundle downloaded outside the Microsoft Store may trigger a browser or security-product warning. The archive notes that this can happen because the file is being downloaded directly rather than through the Store. That warning does not prove that the package is safe, but dismissing the warning without checking the file would also be poor practice.
- Download only from the Paint3DArchive page and its linked GitHub release, not from a random “free download” site.
- Confirm that the filename is the expected
2024.2410.13017.0.AppxBundlerelease or another package you have deliberately selected from the archive. - Before installing, open the file’s Properties in File Explorer and inspect the Digital Signatures information if it is available. Do not install a package if its signature is missing, invalid, or does not match the expected Microsoft-signed package.
- Do not disable Windows security protections merely to force an installation. If the browser or Windows blocks a different file, stop and verify its source instead of looking for a bypass.
How to install Paint 3D on Windows 11
Method 1: Install the AppxBundle with App Installer
Windows includes App Installer, which supports .appx, .appxbundle, .msix, and .msixbundle packages. Microsoft documents App Installer in its App Installer installation and update guide.
- Download
2024.2410.13017.0.AppxBundlefrom the archived GitHub release linked by Paint3DArchive. - Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the download, normally
Downloads. - Double-click the
.AppxBundlefile. - Windows should open App Installer and display the package information.
- Select Install and wait for deployment to finish.
- Open Paint 3D from Start > All apps > Paint 3D.
Because this is an archived package rather than a Store installation, it may not behave exactly like an app installed through the current Store. It also will not receive normal future Paint 3D updates.
Method 2: Install with Windows PowerShell
If double-clicking the bundle does not open App Installer, use Windows PowerShell, not Command Prompt. For the default Downloads folder, run:
Add-AppxPackage -Path "$env:USERPROFILEDownloads2024.2410.13017.0.AppxBundle"To run it:
- Open Start and search for Windows PowerShell.
- Open PowerShell.
- Paste the command above and press Enter.
- Change the path and filename if the package is stored somewhere else.
Microsoft documents Add-AppxPackage -Path for installing signed .appx, .appxbundle, .msix, and .msixbundle packages in the Add-AppxPackage reference.
If Windows reports missing dependencies
Some Appx packages require dependency packages. Dependencies already installed for the current user do not need to be supplied again. If Windows identifies missing dependency files, obtain the appropriate dependency packages from the same release source and provide them with -DependencyPath:

"C:PathDependenciesdependency2.appx"The -DependencyPath parameter accepts one or more dependency-package paths. Do not download unrelated dependency files from an arbitrary site simply because they have a similar name. Microsoft’s Add-AppxPackage documentation explains the parameter and package requirements.

Check or update App Installer
An outdated or damaged App Installer can prevent an AppxBundle from opening. To check the installed App Installer version, open PowerShell and run:
(Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller).VersionMicrosoft also documents this WinGet command for checking for an App Installer update:

Paint 3D installation problems and fixes
“Paint 3D is unavailable” or there is no Store result
This is normally expected rather than a temporary Microsoft Store error. Paint 3D was removed from the Store on November 4, 2024, so current Windows 11 systems cannot obtain it through the ordinary Start > Microsoft Store > search > Get workflow. Use the archived AppxBundle route described above, or choose a current alternative.
The browser blocks the AppxBundle
A browser or security tool may warn because the package is being downloaded outside the Microsoft Store. The warning is not proof that the file is malicious, but it is also not proof that the file is safe. Confirm the archive and GitHub release source, inspect the package’s digital signature, and avoid installing a file that fails those checks. Do not turn off security software just to make an uncertain download work.
“This app package is not supported by App Installer”
Microsoft’s MSIX troubleshooting guide identifies several possible causes, including a damaged download, an incompatible package architecture, missing dependencies, or an outdated App Installer. Try these steps in order:
- Download the AppxBundle again in case the first download was incomplete or damaged.
- Update App Installer and try the package again.
- Install the package with the PowerShell
Add-AppxPackagecommand. - If the error names missing dependencies, supply them with
-DependencyPath. - Inspect the AppX deployment log in Event Viewer: Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppxDeployment-Server.
Microsoft’s App Installer troubleshooting guide also identifies the AppxDeployment-Server log as useful for diagnosing AppX deployment failures.
If Windows continues showing broader errors during installation, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional tool you can try for Windows repair and cleanup; it is not required to install Paint 3D.
Paint 3D installs but will not open
If Paint 3D appears in Windows 11’s installed-app list, try the built-in repair options:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Paint 3D.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Advanced options.
- Select Repair first.
- If Repair does not solve the problem, select Reset.
Reset can remove the app’s local data and settings, so use it after Repair rather than before. Microsoft notes that not every app exposes Repair and Reset; its instructions are available in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
“Edit with Paint 3D” or “Open with” is missing
Paint 3D’s File Explorer integration has had version-specific file-association problems. A missing Edit with Paint 3D context-menu item does not necessarily mean that the app failed to install.
Launch it directly with Start > All apps > Paint 3D. To open an image, use Menu > Open inside Paint 3D rather than relying on the Explorer context menu. Microsoft Q&A discusses this particular Paint 3D Open With issue.

How to use Paint 3D on Windows 11
Once installed, Paint 3D opens much like the Windows 10 version. Its main tool areas include:
- Brushes for freehand painting.
- 2D shapes for flat shapes and drawn elements.
- 3D shapes for built-in three-dimensional objects and the 3D library entry point.
- Stickers for applying sticker artwork to objects or the scene.
- Text for adding lettering.
- Effects for changing the appearance and lighting of the painting.
- Canvas for working with the image area.
- 3D library for accessing the model-library workflow when that service is available.
Microsoft’s Paint 3D object guide documents the main 2D shapes, 3D shapes, Stickers, and Effects controls.
Start a new project
Choose Paint 3D > Menu > New. The Menu contains the main project commands, including New, Open, Insert, Save, and Save as.
Open or insert an image
To open an image as a project, choose:
Menu > Open > Browse files
Then select the image in File Explorer. To add an image to a project that is already open, choose:

This distinction is useful when you want to keep an existing canvas and add another image rather than replace the current project.
Add a 3D model
- Select 3D shapes.
- Select Open 3D library.
- Enter a search term in the Search box.
- Press Enter.
- Select a model to place it on the canvas.
The 3D library is an online service, however, and Paint 3D is retired. Microsoft’s older documentation still shows the 3D shapes > Open 3D library workflow, but it should not be treated as a promise that the online library will remain available. If the library does not load, that may reflect the retired app’s service status rather than a problem with your installation.
Move, resize and rotate a 3D object
Select the model on the canvas to display its object controls:
- Drag the model to move it.
- Drag the white corner and side handles to resize or stretch it.
- Use the on-object arrows to rotate it around the X, Y, or Z axis.
- Use the depth arrow to move it forward or backward in three-dimensional space.
These controls let you position a model before applying stickers, adding text, painting around it, or combining it with other objects.

To combine multiple selected objects, use Select all > Group. Microsoft’s documented example uses this workflow to combine separate pig and wing models into one grouped object. Grouping makes it easier to move or transform the pieces together.
Apply a visual effect
Choose Effects, then select an effect. Paint 3D applies the selected effect to the painting. You can change the apparent light direction by moving the sun control around the Light wheel.
Save an editable copy and export the finished image
Use Menu > Save as to save the project and choose the output format offered by Paint 3D. For a finished 2D image, select the image format you need from the export options.

For a safer workflow, save an editable project copy before exporting a flattened 2D image. The project copy preserves the ability to adjust objects and continue editing; the exported image is for sharing, printing, or use in another application.
What to use instead of Paint 3D
Microsoft’s current deprecated-feature guidance points users toward different tools depending on the job:
- Paint or Photos: for viewing and editing ordinary 2D images.
- Babylon.js Sandbox: for viewing 3D content.
Older articles may recommend Microsoft’s 3D Viewer as the replacement. That advice is outdated according to Microsoft’s guidance as of August 7, 2026: 3D Viewer was removed from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026. For current 3D viewing, Microsoft now lists Babylon.js Sandbox instead. These alternatives do not necessarily reproduce every Paint 3D authoring feature, so choose based on whether you need 2D editing, 3D viewing, or Paint 3D’s specific combined workflow.
Should you install Paint 3D in 2026?
Install it if you specifically need Paint 3D’s familiar combination of basic painting, 2D elements, stickers, text, effects, and simple 3D object manipulation, and you accept that the app is retired and unsupported.
Do not treat the archived package as a normal, permanently supported Windows component. There is no Microsoft Store update path, the online 3D library may stop working, and uninstalling the app removes the easiest remaining installation on that machine. If you only need basic 2D work, current Paint or Photos is the more straightforward choice. If you only need to inspect 3D content, use the current Microsoft-listed 3D viewing option, Babylon.js Sandbox.

Can I still download Paint 3D from the Microsoft Store on Windows 11?
No. Microsoft removed Paint 3D from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. The normal Store search-and-Get process therefore cannot provide a fresh installation. The practical remaining route is an unofficial archived AppxBundle package.
Is the Paint3DArchive download an official Microsoft installer?
No. Paint3DArchive is a third-party archive, although it says that its packages were obtained from Microsoft servers and retain Microsoft digital signatures. Verify the package source and signature before installing, and do not install a file that fails those checks.
Why is Paint 3D installed but missing from the Open With menu?
Recent Paint 3D releases have had version-specific Explorer file-association problems. Launch the app through Start > All apps > Paint 3D, then open files through Menu > Open. A missing context-menu entry does not by itself prove that the app is not installed.
