Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year was PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse: a warming, cocoa-like brown that works beautifully as either a quiet backdrop or a rich accent in painted interiors.
PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse was Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025. Introduced on December 5, 2024, the soft, warming brown brought chocolate, coffee, earthy refinement, and a sense of quiet luxury into the year’s color conversation. Pantone presented those qualities as an invitation to comfort, harmony, contentment, and small everyday indulgences—not as a scientific claim about how brown affects everyone.
For painting and decorating, its lasting usefulness is straightforward: Mocha Mousse is a warm neutral that can either anchor a room or add depth in small doses. It is especially helpful for spaces that feel stark, gray, or overly cool.

Pantone described Mocha Mousse as a rich brown with a sensorial connection to cocoa, chocolate, and coffee. That framing explains why the color reads as more inviting than a flat beige and less formal than a near-black brown. It has enough earthiness to feel grounded, while its softened quality keeps it from becoming heavy.
It is worth keeping the claim in perspective. Pantone’s Color of the Year is a design and cultural selection, not proof that this was the world’s most popular color or a rule that every room needed brown in 2025. Pantone says its program began in 1999 as a conversation about color and culture; its team considers influences across art, entertainment, fashion, travel, technology, materials, social media, and socio-economic conditions. The final color is intended to reflect a wider mood and lifestyle direction.
How to use a Mocha Mousse-inspired brown in a painted room
Think of this color family as a grounding layer. A deep cocoa brown can make pale woods, creamy whites, terracotta, muted rose, soft blue, and olive green look more deliberate. Pantone released five palette stories around Mocha Mousse, reinforcing that it can move from restrained, minimal interiors to layered and decorative ones.
| Use | Where it works | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Feature wall | Dining rooms, studies, snug living rooms | Use a softened cocoa brown behind art, shelving, or a headboard. Balance it with a warm off-white on adjoining walls. |
| Whole-room color | Rooms with generous daylight or pale trim | Choose a lighter brown in the same warm family and test it on multiple walls before committing. |
| Cabinetry or built-ins | Kitchens, libraries, alcoves | Pair brown cabinetry with creamy walls, natural stone, brass, or aged nickel rather than a cold pure white. |
| Accent color | Rental-friendly or cautious updates | Keep walls neutral and bring in brown through a cocoa-toned lamp shade, leather accessory, upholstery, or throw-pillow covers. |
Choose the undertone before choosing the paint
“Mocha” is a useful direction, not a guaranteed paint match. Brown paint can lean red, orange, yellow, gray, olive, or purple depending on its pigments, surrounding colors, and light. A sample that looks like warm milk chocolate under a store’s lighting may look muddy, plum-toned, or unexpectedly cool on your wall.

- Decide whether you need a brown that leans warmer and redder, more caramel and golden, or more muted and gray-brown.
- Paint large samples on separate boards or directly on the wall, then view them in morning, afternoon, and artificial light.
- Check the sample next to trim and the colors that will remain in the room. A crisp cool white can make a warm brown seem more orange; a creamy white generally gives a softer result.
- Select sheen for function as well as appearance. Matte and eggshell soften a brown’s depth; satin or semi-gloss makes it more reflective and is usually better reserved for trim, cabinets, or hard-wearing surfaces.
If you are using Mocha Mousse in a client brief, product specification, textile selection, or color-matching workflow, rely on a physical Pantone reference rather than a screen. Pantone’s Fashion, Home + Interiors system lists 17-1230 TPG, and its 17-1230 TPG Large Paper Swatch is intended for realistic color representation, verification, communication, and specification. Pantone also warns that online colors are simulations and may not match identified physical standards.

What not to assume
- Mocha Mousse was not a brand-new color created for 2025. Pantone had previously included the shade in its Spring/Summer 2023 London trend report, describing it as a sweet milk-chocolate brown.
- A paint labeled “mocha,” “cocoa,” or “chocolate” is not automatically the Pantone shade.
- A generic brown decor item should not be called “Pantone Mocha Mousse” or “Pantone-certified” unless its listing and authorization establish that specifically.
- For a low-risk home update, warm cocoa or mocha-brown throw-pillow covers can bring in the direction without repainting. Confirm the current color, fabric, dimensions, insert inclusion, seller, price, and return policy before buying.
Mocha Mousse now
Mocha Mousse remains a useful reference for anyone building a warmer, more layered neutral palette, but it is a historical Color of the Year selection. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2026 is PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer. That change does not make a cocoa-toned room dated; it simply keeps the timeline accurate.

Can I match Mocha Mousse from an online image?
Not reliably. Screens are simulations, and paint formulas, sheens, lighting, and adjacent colors all change the result. Use a physical Pantone swatch for exact specification work and test paint samples in the actual room.
What colors pair well with a Mocha Mousse-inspired brown?
Use it with warm off-whites, pale oak, leather, brass, natural stone, terracotta, olive, muted rose, or softened blue. Test combinations in the room, especially when existing finishes have strong undertones.
