Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year is PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer, a soft, airy white that is often described as an off-white. Pantone announced the choice on December 4, 2025, making Cloud Dancer the first white shade selected in the Color of the Year program.

For painters and color professionals, the important distinction is that Cloud Dancer is not simply “any warm white.” It is a named Pantone standard associated with the Fashion, Home + Interiors system and Cotton TCX library. Pantone is presenting it as a quiet structural neutral: a shade intended to create space, reduce visual noise, and let other colors and materials become more noticeable.

Pantone describes it with terms such as “lofty,” “billowy,” and “ethereal.” In practical painting language, it is best understood as an airy off-white whose appearance will change substantially with surrounding colors, lighting, sheen, and substrate.
That last point matters. A digital swatch on a monitor is not a certified physical match. Pantone warns that on-screen color is a computer simulation and may differ from the physical standard. If an exact match matters for a brand, product, interior scheme, or commissioned work, use the relevant physical Pantone reference rather than relying on a screenshot or an unverified RGB or hex conversion.
There is no responsibly universal RGB or hex value to publish here. The official designation—11-4201—is the reliable point of reference.
Why Cloud Dancer is historically significant
Pantone’s Color of the Year program began in 1999 as a way to connect color with global culture, design, and broader social conversations. The company says its selection process draws on year-round macro-level color forecasting and research into the emotional and cultural context of the coming year.
Cloud Dancer stands out because major coverage identifies it as the first white shade chosen for the program. Pantone has selected neutrals before—including Sand Dollar in 2006—but Cloud Dancer is the first selection whose central identity is white.
That makes the announcement more consequential than a routine change in the annual palette. White has always been fundamental in painting, fashion, interiors, packaging, and product design. Pantone has now elevated a restrained, adaptable white into the program’s main cultural signal.
It is more accurate to say that Pantone has made neutrality the headline than to say that the company selected “the absence of color.” The latter is a rhetorical interpretation, not Pantone’s technical description of Cloud Dancer.

What Pantone says Cloud Dancer represents
Pantone’s explanation is primarily cultural and emotional, not a technical claim about pigment or a scientifically demonstrated psychological effect. The company frames Cloud Dancer as a response to an overstimulating environment and associates it with:
- Calm and relief: a visual pause from constant noise and activity.
- Clarity: a way to clear distractions and create room for reflection.
- Fresh starts: a blank-canvas metaphor for new beginnings and new approaches.
- Creative possibility: a background that allows ideas, forms, and colors to emerge.
- Spaciousness and lightness: an airy quality that can make an environment feel open.
Those are Pantone’s intended associations. They should not be presented as proof that Cloud Dancer improves mental health, concentration, sleep, or well-being. A white room may feel calm to one person and cold, glaring, or unfinished to another. The result depends on the full design—not just the name of the paint or textile.
Cloud Dancer is a structural neutral, not a rule to make everything white
Pantone describes Cloud Dancer as a key structural color. In other words, its main strength is not necessarily visual dominance. It provides a foundation that can harmonize with neighboring hues, create contrast, or make other colors more visible.
For painters, that suggests using Cloud Dancer as the quiet architecture of a palette rather than treating it as the entire palette. It can function as a wall color, ground, backdrop, trim-adjacent field, or negative-space element while stronger colors carry the focal point.

- Powdered pastels: pale pinks, muted yellows, soft greens, and diluted blues can create subtle transitions with little visual aggression.
- Breezy blues and blue-greens: aqueous and atmospheric hues reinforce the feeling of air and openness.
- Light-to-dark tonal shifts: moving from Cloud Dancer through softened midtones into darker shades creates gentle but readable contrast.
- Black and white: a near-black or true black accent gives Cloud Dancer a crisp, sophisticated graphic role.
- Natural materials: wood, stone, wool, linen, boucle, chenille, and other tactile surfaces prevent a pale scheme from feeling visually flat.
The practical lesson is simple: texture and contrast determine whether a soft white feels dimensional or clinical. In a matte painted surface, light direction and the colors nearby may do most of the work. In an interior, rough textiles, natural fibers, shadows, and darker details can keep the neutral from becoming sterile.
How painters can work with an off-white like Cloud Dancer
Cloud Dancer is especially relevant to artists and decorative painters because off-whites are rarely perceived in isolation. A white field reflects surrounding color. A warm floor, blue sky, green foliage, yellow artificial light, or dark architectural element can all shift how the same white appears.
1. Treat the physical reference as the starting point
If you need the named Pantone shade rather than a general approximation, begin with a physical 11-4201 reference. Do not match it by eye to a random “cloud white,” “ivory,” “eggshell,” or “natural white” paint chip. Those commercial names are not interchangeable with Cloud Dancer.

For professional work, a Pantone Formula Guide Solid Coated & Uncoated can help designers and printers understand Pantone spot-color references and ink formulas. It is a professional reference tool—not a Cloud Dancer-only swatch book, and not a guarantee that a wall-paint formula will reproduce the same appearance.

2. Test the intended paint system
Pantone standards and architectural paints are different systems. A Pantone reference may specify a standardized color target, while a paint manufacturer’s formula depends on its own pigments, bases, finish, application method, and manufacturing tolerances. If the project requires a close translation, ask the paint supplier or color laboratory for a match and approve a physical sample.
3. Compare samples in the actual light
Place large sample boards in the room or painting environment. Check them in morning, midday, evening, and artificial light. Compare them beside the intended trim, floor, fabric, frame, or neighboring colors. A small card can make an off-white look cleaner and brighter than it will appear across a large wall.
4. Watch the finish
Gloss changes the way a pale color reflects light. A matte or low-sheen surface generally produces a quieter appearance, while a satin or gloss finish can increase highlights and make the color feel brighter or more severe. The same pigment mixture can therefore read differently depending on the surface and finish.
5. Decide whether you need the exact name or the visual effect
For a personal painting, the goal may simply be a soft, atmospheric white. In that case, a carefully chosen local paint or artist color may be sufficient. For a licensed design, branded object, packaging system, or commissioned environment specified as Cloud Dancer, the exact 11-4201 reference and an approved translation process matter much more.
Cloud Dancer in fashion, beauty, and interiors
Fashion
Pantone’s application material places Cloud Dancer across relaxed shirts, T-shirts, denim, sportswear, tailoring, dresses, outerwear, knitwear, padded silhouettes, and flowing fabrics. Accessories such as jewelry, eyewear, bags, shoes, and sneakers can use the shade as either a quiet foundation or a clean contrast against darker colors.
The appeal is flexibility. Cloud Dancer can support a minimalist outfit, soften tailoring, or make a saturated accessory stand out. It does not require every component to be white; a single off-white garment or accessory can provide the visual breathing room.
Beauty
Pantone’s beauty examples include white nails, graphic eyeliner, pale makeup, high-contrast makeup, pearls, shimmer, and clean minimalist styling. These are trend-direction examples, not proof that every pale beauty product is officially Cloud Dancer. Unless a product carries the 11-4201 designation or an authorized license, it should be described as inspired by the shade rather than as an exact match.
Interiors and product design
In interiors, Pantone presents Cloud Dancer for walls, furniture, textiles, kitchens, bathrooms, accessories, packaging, and multimedia design. Its commercial value is its ability to act as a background: color, form, texture, and material can become more prominent against it.
For a room, the safest approach is to vary material and value rather than filling every surface with the same white. Pair it with natural wood, woven textiles, darker hardware, pale blue-green accents, or a strong black detail. The result will usually have more depth than a room composed of one flat white and one bright ceiling light.
Where Cloud Dancer is appearing commercially
Pantone’s 2026 announcement has produced an unusually broad collection of licensed and branded applications. Availability is not universal, and several products are regional, limited-edition, or no longer available.

How to identify a genuine Cloud Dancer reference
The most important verification is the number: PANTONE 11-4201. A product described only as white, cream, ivory, eggshell, linen, or natural white has not been demonstrated to match Cloud Dancer.
Look for one of three forms of evidence:
- An official Pantone reference carrying the 11-4201 designation.
- A product or collection explicitly identified by Pantone or an authorized licensee as Cloud Dancer.
- A documented color-matching process that explains how the material was translated from the Pantone standard.
Be cautious with online color charts. Even a technically correct digital conversion can look different across displays, browsers, operating systems, and surrounding colors. For artwork and paint, physical samples are the meaningful test.
What the 2026 choice really means
Cloud Dancer does not mean that white has suddenly become more important than every other color, nor does it require consumers to repaint their homes or replace their wardrobes. Its significance is cultural and commercial: Pantone has turned a quiet, adaptable neutral into a symbol of reset and a platform for design collaborations.
The choice also reflects the unusual power of a neutral. Saturated colors announce themselves immediately, while a soft white can shape the space around everything else. It can make a room feel more open, give a product a restrained identity, or create a clean field for a painting, pattern, logo, or material to occupy.

For painters, the useful takeaway is not to chase a trend blindly. It is to understand how a pale neutral behaves: how nearby colors influence it, how light changes it, how texture gives it structure, and how a named standard differs from a generic commercial color.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cloud Dancer pure white?
No. PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is presented as a soft, airy white and is commonly described as an off-white with a warmer, more natural feeling than a stark cool white.
What is the hex code for Pantone Cloud Dancer?
There is no universal verified RGB or hex value to rely on from the researched official material. Use the physical PANTONE 11-4201 reference when accuracy matters, because screen simulations may not match the physical standard.
Can I buy paint that exactly matches Cloud Dancer?
Possibly, through a paint supplier or color-matching service, but a Pantone standard and an architectural paint formula are different systems. Request a physical match, test it in the intended lighting, and do not assume that a paint called ivory, cream, or white is Cloud Dancer.
Is Cloud Dancer available in the United States?
Availability depends on the product. The Post-it Neutrality Collection has a researched U.S. product listing, while Motorola’s strongest researched evidence is regional and the Pura collaboration was reported permanently sold out. Check the current local listing before purchasing.
The Bottom Line
Cloud Dancer is best understood as Pantone turning neutrality into a headline. PANTONE 11-4201 is a named, standardized soft white—not a universal digital swatch and not a synonym for every warm white on a paint-store shelf. Use the physical reference for exact work, test any paint translation under real lighting, and let texture, contrast, and neighboring colors determine whether the shade feels calm and dimensional rather than flat.
