To make a papercraft car, choose an available printable template, check its page size and build instructions, then cut, fold, and glue the pieces into shape. Free designs range from simple paper toys to detailed race cars, so the best starting point is a template whose difficulty and materials suit the person building it.

Where to find a papercraft car template
Printable car designs are available from specialist catalogs, automakers, motorsport teams, and paper-toy sites. Check that the actual download still works before choosing: Mazda notes that some of its other papercraft downloads are no longer available.

How to choose a template before printing
Compare a few practical details before committing paper and time to a build:
#1 Best Overall
- Difficulty and detail: Look for a listed difficulty or inspect the template and instructions. A model with many small parts or detailed folds is likely to demand more careful cutting and assembly than a simple paper toy.
- Pages and scale: Check how many sheets the model uses and whether a scale or finished size is listed. Do not assume that two cars with similar names will print to the same dimensions.
- Print format: Match the file to the paper size you have. Ixia3D lists both Letter and A4; other template pages may specify a different format.
- Instructions and download status: Prefer a model with usable assembly guidance, and verify that its download link opens before printing.
- Age guidance: Use the age label only for the model it belongs to. Ixia3D’s age 6+ note applies to its car template, not to every papercraft car.
Paper and tools for a paper car
Use the material specified by the chosen template rather than treating one paper weight as universal. Papelest recommends 200–250 g/m² paper or cardstock for its models. For its Ford Mustang GT3 plans, Multimatic recommends 80 lb (216 gsm) cardstock. These are different, source-specific recommendations.
Gather the basics before starting:
- A printer and the selected template
- The paper type, weight, and page size specified for that template
- Scissors or a craft knife
- A ruler
- Glue suitable for the model’s instructions
Multimatic’s Mustang instructions mention hot glue or superglue, and recommend pre-bending tabs and scoring fold lines for cleaner bends. Treat those as directions for that particular build; another template may call for different tools or adhesive. If using a craft knife, take care around the blade and use adult supervision for children.

Basic steps for assembling a papercraft car
- Download and inspect the file. Confirm it is the intended model, the download opens, and the pages match your printer paper. Read any build notes before printing.
- Print at the template’s intended size. Use the paper format specified on the source page and avoid changing scaling unless the instructions explain how to do so.
- Cut out the parts. Use scissors or a craft knife as appropriate for the design. Work carefully around small details and tabs.
- Prepare the folds. Fold along marked lines. Where the template calls for it, score fold lines and pre-bend tabs before applying adhesive.
- Join the pieces in the stated order. Apply the recommended glue to tabs and hold joins in place as needed. Follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming a general assembly sequence.
- Let joins set before handling the model. Follow the adhesive’s directions and avoid pulling on glued tabs while they are setting.
Common snags and how to avoid them
- The link no longer downloads: Recheck the source page for another file or choose a different template. Some older downloads may have been removed.
- The print does not fit the paper: Confirm the template’s page size and printer settings before printing the full set. Do not stretch or shrink the design unless the instructions permit it, as scaling can change the fit of parts.
- Folds look rough or tabs resist: Make folds carefully along the intended lines; for the Mustang GT3, Multimatic specifically recommends scoring fold lines and pre-bending tabs.
- A model feels too demanding: Choose a simpler template with fewer small pieces or clearer assembly instructions rather than starting with a highly detailed vehicle.
