Sugar glass is hard candy that can look like glass, but a homemade sugar bottle is not a safe prop to break on or near an actor. It can be a supervised candy or science craft; for a production breakaway, use a professionally manufactured prop with the production’s safety approval. If the scene only needs the look of glass, choose a nonbreaking stage bottle.

What sugar glass is
Sugar glass is cooked hard candy, not silicate glass. Heating sugar, corn syrup, and water boils away moisture; as the mixture cools, it sets into a hard, glassy candy. The Sugar Association describes cooking the mixture to about 300°F, the hard-crack stage. That temperature is a candy-making reference, not a stunt-safety threshold. A digital candy thermometer helps monitor the cooking process.

Corn syrup helps limit recrystallization, which can make the candy cloudy. Lehigh University’s International Materials Institute for Glass explains that excess water can leave the result soft and taffy-like, while excessive stirring in a high-sucrose mixture can encourage crystallization. These are useful considerations for a candy demonstration, not a formula for a dependable breakaway bottle.
Use it for a supervised candy craft, not stunt contact
Shaping a glass-like candy decoration
For a non-stunt craft, sugar candy can be poured into a suitable silicone mold to form decorative shapes. Lehigh’s classroom demonstration uses 120 g cane sugar, 60 g corn syrup, and 20 g water, with a digital candy thermometer. Treat this as a small educational candy recipe, not a tested bottle-making or breakaway method; the result depends on technique and conditions.

Boiling sugar is extremely hot and can cause serious burns. Keep children away from the hot mixture; older children need close adult supervision. Once cooled, broken candy can have sharp edges, so do not treat it as harmless just because it is edible. The Sugar Association quotes cake-decorating instructor Chaley Harney: “I always tell people that sugar is sweet but boiling sugar is serious business.”
Why a homemade sugar bottle is not a safe breakaway prop
Homemade sugar castings are difficult to make consistent, and humidity can make them sticky. Their break behavior is not a reliable safety control: a candy bottle may break unpredictably, and contact can seriously injure someone. NewRuleFX advises using a professional breakaway product when a bottle will contact an actor. No recipe or kitchen tool turns a homemade candy bottle into an approved stunt prop.
Choose the prop for the scene

For production props, Breakaway FX describes resin breakaway products and nonbreaking stage bottles; these are different solutions for different visual needs. Supplier descriptions are not independent comparative testing. Smooth-On’s breakaway-glass tutorial describes molding a real bottle and casting its SMASH! plastic. It identifies a two-piece cored mold as an advanced technique and recommends prior mold-making experience. That is a resin-prop fabrication method, not a sugar recipe or a safety guarantee.

Production safety for a planned breakaway
CalArts School of Film/Video’s “Glass” safety guidance, last updated August 31, 2026, says breakaway glass is less hazardous than ordinary glass, but can still injure people. It says productions should use professionally manufactured breakaway materials and never substitute real glass for a planned breakaway effect.
- Obtain production approval for the planned effect and prop.
- Rehearse the action before filming or performance.
- Keep nonessential people outside the hazard area.
- Use eye protection for nearby crew where practical, and assign a supervisor.
- Inspect and clean the area after every take.
- For stage-combat work, plan and practice with the prop and involve an expert in stage combat.
CalArts explicitly advises against homemade candy glass and other improvised breakaway materials because they may break unpredictably or unsafely. If the scene does not require actual breakage, plastic or acrylic alternatives can provide the glassware appearance without a breakaway effect.

Humidity, handling, and storage
Sugar glass absorbs moisture from the air, which can soften it and make it sticky. The Sugar Association and NewRuleFX advise handling and using it soon after preparation. The sources do not establish a universal shelf-life duration, so do not rely on a fixed storage period for a craft result. For a production effect, the proper alternative is an approved professional prop, not an attempt to control humidity around homemade candy.
