Patches on Point is a beginner-friendly quilt pattern that arranges 20 nine-patch-based blocks diagonally for a finished quilt measuring 57 × 71¼ inches. The pattern is by Betsy Chutchian, with machine quilting by Maggi Honeyman, and was published by American Patchwork & Quilting Editors on September 12, 2025. See the pattern at AllPeopleQuilt.com.
What “on point” means in this pattern
Each block begins with a familiar nine-patch unit. Setting the blocks “on point” means rotating their placement in the quilt layout so the squares appear as diamonds, rather than sitting in straight horizontal and vertical rows. The nine-patch itself is not a different block; the diagonal arrangement creates the overall effect. BERNINA’s Quilter’s Manual describes straight, on-point, and diamond layouts as ways to join blocks.

Finished size and block construction
The finished quilt measures 57 × 71¼ inches, and each finished block measures 10 inches square. The pattern makes 20 blocks. For each, sew 2½-inch squares into a nine-patch unit, then add the specified squares and rectangles to make a 10½-inch unfinished block. The difference between unfinished and finished measurements accounts for the seam allowances consumed when blocks are joined.
Materials and fabric requirements
The pattern bases its cutting and yardage on 42 inches of usable fabric width. Its block fabrics call for 40 strips total, each 2½ × 42 inches: 34 assorted light, medium, and dark print strips, plus 6 green print strips.

| Material | Pattern requirement | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Assorted light, medium, and dark prints | 34 strips, each 2½ × 42 inches | Block units |
| Green prints | 6 strips, each 2½ × 42 inches | Block units |
| Cream-and-red print | 2⅛ yards | Setting pieces |
| Green vine print | ⅝ yard | Binding |
| Backing fabric | 3⅝ yards | Quilt backing |
| Batting | 65 × 80 inches | Quilt interior |
A jelly roll or other precut 2½-inch strips can supply fabric for the blocks, but check that the bundle contains enough strips and a useful spread of light, medium, dark, and green prints. It does not replace the separate setting, binding, backing, or batting requirements. AllPeopleQuilt.com’s precut-fabric overview also connects this pattern with jelly roll strips.
The sample uses Sally’s Stitches by Betsy Chutchian for Moda Fabrics. That identifies the fabrics used for the sample, not a requirement to use the collection; current availability is not established here. Choose prints with enough contrast to distinguish the pattern’s light, medium, and dark areas.

How the quilt top is arranged
After making the 20 blocks, arrange them in eight diagonal rows. Setting squares and triangles fill the spaces between blocks, and corner triangles complete the top’s outer edges. Follow the pattern’s layout and cutting sequence when preparing those pieces; their angles and placement are what carry the square blocks into the on-point design.

- Unless an instruction says otherwise, sew with right sides together.
- Use ¼-inch seam allowances and cut accurately so the blocks and setting pieces fit the planned layout.
- Press seams toward the darker fabric unless a diagram directs otherwise.
- The pattern leaves quilting choice open. The sample was machine-quilted in a Baptist fan design.
The pattern gives dimensions and construction steps rather than requiring a named rotary cutter, ruler, mat, or brand of equipment.
