A peacock feather’s shifting blue-green sheen comes largely from its microscopic structure, not simply from colored pigment. The familiar “eye” is an eyespot on one of the elongated feathers that form a male common peafowl’s display train.

What makes a peacock feather shimmer?
Its iridescence is a form of structural color. Fine physical structures in the feather interact with light, producing interference that makes particular colors more prominent. Because the effect changes with viewing angle, the feather can seem to shift in color rather than show one fixed, painted hue. The Canadian Conservation Institute and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History describe this structural basis for peacock iridescence.

The American Museum of Natural History notes that coloration can involve different structures and pigments in the barbs and barbules. In conservation analysis, specialists can examine feathers under reflected and transmitted light to investigate where color is located; this is not a necessary or reliable do-it-yourself test.

What is the eye on a peacock feather?
The eye is an eyespot: a conspicuous pattern near the end of an elongated feather in the male common peafowl’s train. Its blue and bronze rings create the familiar eye-like appearance. The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes a male’s train as about 5 feet (1.7 meters) long and says a male may have 100–175 eyespots. These are approximate institutional figures, not a guarantee for every bird.
Which feathers make up the train?
The showy, eyespotted feathers are elongated upper tail feathers that form the male’s train. They are distinct from the shorter feathers of the actual tail, which support the display feathers. The train’s large patterned surface is what makes the eyespots so noticeable when the male displays.

How people have used peacock feathers
Feathers have served both decorative and practical purposes. The Canadian Conservation Institute lists uses such as clothing, hats, headdresses, fans, bags, arrows, and shuttlecocks. It also cautions that some feather objects in North American Indigenous cultures are culturally sensitive and require special care; they should not be treated as ordinary craft supplies.

A specific example appears in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection: an 18th-century Chinese Qing-dynasty valance decorated with peacock-feather embroidery. The museum describes actual feathers wrapped around a silk core to create thread, which was then couched onto silk satin.

Painting a peacock feather
For an observational painting, treat the feather as a changing optical surface rather than a set of flat blue and green fills. First establish the long central shaft and the fine barbs branching from it. Then place the eyespot’s nested color areas and surrounding feather texture. Observe the subject under a consistent light and viewing angle: structural color shifts when either changes, so a painted color arrangement records a particular view rather than a permanent appearance.
Use the eye pattern as a focal area, but preserve the finer directional marks that connect it to the feather’s form. If working from a photograph, remember that its lighting and camera angle may affect the apparent color; avoid treating those recorded hues as a definitive color chart.

Preserving a real feather or featherwork
For feather objects, prevention is safer than improvised cleaning. The American Museum of Natural History identifies light exposure and pests as particular risks to feathers and other keratin materials; over time, feathers may become brittle and more sensitive to water. The Canadian Conservation Institute presents care as preventive conservation and risk management.
