To identify an unfamiliar phone icon, first note where it appears: the status bar, notification shade, quick settings panel, or inside an app. Its location and your phone model are often more useful than its shape alone. iPhone and Android symbols are not one universal set, and their appearance can vary by device, software, carrier, region, and settings.

What kind of phone icon are you looking at?

Phones use icons for different jobs. A symbol at the top of the screen may report device status, while a similar-looking symbol elsewhere may open a control or identify an app.

  • Status or system indicators: Small symbols in the status bar report a state or activity, such as connectivity, battery, an active feature, or device condition.
  • Notification icons: These indicate that an app has an alert or update to inspect, often through the notification shade.
  • Quick settings or control icons: These are controls or shortcuts, such as Bluetooth, flashlight, or screen rotation.
  • App and settings icons: These identify an app or an action whose meaning is specific to that app or settings screen.

Android’s system-bar guidance explains that the status bar can show both notification and system icons; notifications commonly place an icon there. That means a small symbol at the top may be an alert from an app rather than a device setting. Android also notes that icons can change with context, user preferences, themes, and other factors. Common status-bar meanings

Status icons usually summarize a current state, rather than diagnose a problem. Common categories include:

  • Power: Battery level, charging, or a power-saving mode.
  • Active features and sessions: A call, screen recording, navigation, media connection, or casting session.
  • Privacy and location: Location use, microphone or camera activity, or another privacy-related feature, depending on the phone and software.
  • Sound, focus, and time: An alarm, Do Not Disturb, mute, or vibration.
  • Accessibility and device-specific tools: Voice control, TTY, an accessibility shortcut, or a manufacturer feature such as an S Pen state.

These are categories, not a universal picture dictionary. For example, Apple’s guide includes indicators for network activity, calls, screen recording, location-related navigation, VPN, and accessibility features. Samsung’s Galaxy guide lists common indicators including VPN, Data Saver, casting, NFC, microphone mute, and update availability. Which symbols appear depends on the device and active features.

Where to look on an iPhone

Apple’s official guide is the best match for iPhone status symbols: Learn the meaning of iPhone status icons. It covers connectivity, battery, active sessions, media, privacy-related indicators, and accessibility. Some entries depend on supported models, carrier, or country or region; for example, 5G and satellite indicators are not available in every circumstance.

Where to look on a Samsung Galaxy

Samsung’s Galaxy guide describes common system indicators, not every icon that may appear on every Galaxy phone. See What do the different indicator icons mean on your Galaxy phone? Its guide includes network, battery, call and message, location, sound, feature, and device-specific indicators. Samsung says the symbols can vary by model, provider, or service, and some appear only after you open the notification panel. The page was updated April 24, 2026.

Samsung also distinguishes status indicators from controls in the Quick panel. Its examples of Quick panel controls include sound, Bluetooth, auto rotate, torch, mobile data, location, screen recording, Do Not Disturb, and QR scanning. A control icon may be tappable; a status icon may simply report what is happening.

How to identify an unfamiliar icon

  1. Note its location. Is it in the top status bar, notification shade, quick settings, navigation area, home screen, or inside one app? Android navigation controls, for example, may be buttons or gestures; they are not all status icons.
  2. Look at what was happening. Did it appear during a call, while charging, after changing a setting, or only while a particular app was open? Expand the relevant panel or tap the symbol if it is clearly a control; a label may reveal its function.
  3. Match the guide to your phone. Start with Apple’s iPhone guide for an iPhone, Samsung’s guide for a Galaxy, or your phone maker’s support information for another Android model. A cross-platform image list may show a similar shape without matching your phone’s software or settings.
  4. Check the relevant panel. On Android, pull down from the status bar to open the notification shade. On a Galaxy, check the notification panel if the symbol is not visible in the status bar. On iPhone, open Control Center for expanded status details, including line-specific information on dual-SIM devices.
  5. If it remains unclear, check settings and recent changes. Look at the app that was active and relevant connectivity, privacy, or accessibility settings. If the icon appeared after an update or interface change, consult the current support guidance for your device and software.

What to do when an icon suggests an active feature

First identify the state the icon reports, then decide whether you want that state to continue. A battery or signal symbol reports power or connectivity; a location, VPN, microphone, recording, or accessibility indicator may be a reason to inspect the relevant setting or app. An indicator by itself is not evidence that a phone has been compromised.

For accessibility, Android’s Accessibility Menu is one example of a feature that may have a visible shortcut. Google says it can provide controls for touch, buttons, and navigation, along with actions such as screenshots, locking the screen, opening Assistant or Quick Settings, and adjusting volume or brightness. Depending on setup, the shortcut may be a floating accessibility button or a gesture; some Google instructions apply only to Android 12 and later. Details are at Use the Accessibility Menu.
