Adobe’s standalone Photoshop app for Android is real, free to download, and far more capable than a filter editor—but it is not a free copy of desktop Photoshop. Adobe launched it on Google Play on June 3, 2025, and still labels Android Photoshop as beta in its support documentation. Basic editing is available, while premium features and full functionality require a Creative Cloud subscription. It also works on supported Android phones, not Android tablets or Chromebooks.
It’s Photoshop, not Photoshop Express
The Android app is a separate Adobe Photoshop mobile app, rather than Photoshop Express under a new name. It brings familiar Photoshop-style work—layers, masks, selections, compositing, retouching and generative editing—to a phone. Adobe’s June 3, 2025 launch announcement introduced it as a free beta. That launch date matters: “finally here” describes the arrival of Photoshop on Android, not a new 2026 release.

What you can do with Photoshop on Android
The app’s strongest distinction from simpler phone editors is its layered approach. You can combine a photo, added graphics and text, then move elements independently. Adobe’s feature comparison lists Android layer controls for opacity and blending, masks, transforms, clipping, visibility, locking, duplication and layer order.
Selections let you target a person, object or area rather than applying an edit to the entire image. Available tools include Tap Select, Quick Select Brush, Lasso, Rectangle, Ellipse, Magic Wand, Object Select and Brush selection. Once an area is selected, you can make a localized adjustment, remove or replace content, or use a generative tool.
- Retouch and remove: Clone Stamp and Remove can help clean up distractions or repair parts of a picture.
- Adjust appearance: The app offers adjustments including brightness, contrast, exposure, hue, saturation, black and white, color balance and vibrance, plus effects.
- Add content: Work with text and Adobe Stock assets, or bring in images and files to build a composite.
- Use Adobe-connected sources: Adobe lists imports from Lightroom and the Android file browser, as well as Adobe Stock assets.
Generative Fill and Generative Expand
Generative Fill can add, remove or replace content in a selected area through a generative workflow. For example, select a distracting object and ask the tool to fill the space, or select an area where you want a new visual element. Generative Expand grows the canvas and generates content into the added space—handy when you need to adapt a tightly framed landscape photo to a wider layout.

Adobe’s documented Generative Expand flow is: open a photo, choose Size, drag the bounding-box corners to expand the canvas, choose Generative expand, then Generate. Review the variations and tap the checkmark to commit one. Adobe may change labels as the beta evolves; its current Generative Expand instructions show the documented steps.
Harmonize and AI Assistant
Harmonize is intended to help a newly added person or object fit into a different scene by adjusting aspects such as lighting, color and shadows. It can speed up a composite, but it does not guarantee a convincing result. Inspect edges, contact shadows, reflections and perspective before using an image.
Adobe’s June 2026 mobile release notes describe an AI Assistant that interprets an edit request and applies targeted changes with improved selection models and Selective Generative Fill. Treat this as an assisted workflow, not a promise that every instruction will work precisely. You may still need to refine the selection or make manual edits.

What is free—and what may cost money?
The app is free to download, and it offers substantial editing capability without an upfront purchase. But “free to download” does not mean every advanced feature is permanently free or unlimited. Adobe’s current mobile-app FAQ says premium features and full functionality require a Creative Cloud subscription. The precise features available to you can depend on your account, plan, feature entitlements and any applicable generative credits or usage limits.

Adobe said all app features were free during the initial beta period in 2025. That was launch-period messaging, not a safe promise of permanent free access. Adobe also announced a Photoshop Mobile and Web plan at $7.99 per month or $69.99 per year in February 2025; those are historical launch prices, not confirmation of what a US customer will pay now. Check the live Google Play or Adobe purchase flow for current regional price and plan details. Adobe says work saved using features available during a free period is not lost when paid access begins, though access to the relevant premium functionality can change.

- An Android phone: Adobe says Android tablets and Chromebooks are not supported
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that every device will feel equally responsive. Processor, available storage, screen size and thermal performance can all affect the experience. Check the app’s Google Play listing on the exact device you plan to use; a tablet or Chromebook is not made compatible simply because it runs Android apps.

Adobe’s comparison updated April 7, 2026 shows that Android has major tools such as layers, masks, Clone Stamp, Magic Wand, Object Select, Generative Fill, Generative Expand and Harmonize. It also shows several differences that matter to photographers and retouchers:

If your color workflow depends on Curves or your retouching depends on Face adjustments, verify the current Android feature set before subscribing or moving a project. Adobe identifies Photoshop for Android as beta in its requirements documentation, so expect that features and interface details may change.

A practical first edit: remove a distraction and widen the frame
- Install the right app. In Google Play, search for Adobe Photoshop: Photo Editor and confirm Adobe is the publisher. Use the official Google Play listing, not an APK from an unofficial download site.
- Open a photo. Sign in or create an Adobe ID, then import a picture from your device or a supported source such as Lightroom.
- Select the distraction. Try Tap Select or Object Select to isolate the unwanted object. Refine the selection if it includes areas you want to keep.
- Remove or replace it. Use the available removal or Generative Fill workflow on the selected area. Review the result at a close zoom for repeated textures, broken edges or other artifacts.
- Expand the canvas if needed. Choose Size, drag the canvas boundary outward, select Generative expand, and generate variations. Pick the most plausible result and commit it.
- Finish the composite carefully. If you add a subject or object to another scene, try Harmonize and inspect the lighting, shadows and perspective. Keep the layers you need for further adjustments.
Generative editing is a starting point, not quality control. Check faces, hands, text, architecture, repeated textures and edges, and do not assume a plausible-looking result is accurate. If an image is for client or commercial use, review Adobe’s terms and your own disclosure or rights requirements rather than treating an AI result as automatically cleared.
Does it replace desktop Photoshop?
For a mobile-first creator, Android Photoshop may cover a lot: making a thumbnail, layering text over a photo, removing a person in the background, replacing a simple background or creating a quick composite. It is also useful for concept work and edits when a computer is not nearby.
It is not a full desktop replacement if you need the complete toolset, advanced color correction, Curves on Android, large and complex documents, precise mouse/keyboard/tablet input, plug-ins, automation or extensive production and file-management controls. Adobe lists file-browser and Lightroom imports, but do not infer from that alone that every desktop PSD feature, document behavior or sync workflow is identical across mobile, web and desktop. Check the exact file and plan requirements for a project that must move between devices.

Who should download it?
Try it if you have a supported Android phone, want layers and masks rather than filters alone, need selections or generative compositing, or already use Adobe’s Photoshop, Lightroom or Stock ecosystem. You can install it free and see whether its mobile workflow suits you before paying for additional functionality.
Look elsewhere or proceed cautiously if you use an Android tablet or Chromebook, have an older or lower-memory phone, require Curves or Face adjustments, need desktop-level production control, or expect unlimited generative editing at no cost. Also consider whether you want to create an Adobe account and whether subscription and AI usage conditions fit your needs.
