To change the empty working area in Paint, adjust the canvas dimensions—not the toolbar’s image Resize command, which scales the artwork too. In current Windows 11 Paint, try Image Properties (often opened with Ctrl+E) to enter exact dimensions, or use the canvas handles for a quick change. Save a copy first if you plan to make the canvas smaller.
Canvas size, image size, crop, and zoom: what’s the difference?
The canvas is the rectangular working area your picture sits on. Changing it affects the area available around the artwork; resizing the image scales the artwork itself; cropping removes parts of it. Zoom only changes how large the picture looks on your screen.

Paint’s interface has changed over time, especially in Windows 11, so the exact location or wording of a control can vary by version. Microsoft has documented updates to Paint’s Image Properties dialog and zoom controls; look for equivalent labels such as Image Properties, Resize, Pixels, Width, and Height if your screen differs. Microsoft’s Windows Insider notes describe these Paint interface updates.
Enlarge the canvas without stretching the artwork
- Open the image in Paint.
- Choose Save as and make a copy if the original matters.
- Open Image Properties. In current Paint guidance, Ctrl+E commonly opens this dialog; availability may differ by build. The shortcut is reported in Microsoft Q&A guidance, rather than guaranteed across every Paint version.
- Enter a larger value for Width and/or Height, using pixels if the dialog offers a unit choice.
- Confirm the change. Check the artwork and all four edges: the goal is more working area, not a scaled picture.
For example, if a picture is 800 × 600 pixels and you need room for a title above it, increasing the height to 760 pixels adds room vertically. Whether the original picture stays at the top, bottom, or another position depends on the build and how the canvas is changed. If placement matters, use the copy-and-paste method below.
Set exact canvas dimensions
For an exact working area—for example, 1,200 × 800 pixels—use numeric fields rather than dragging. Open Image Properties if your Paint build provides canvas width and height fields, set the units to Pixels, and enter the target dimensions. Current Microsoft Q&A guidance also describes entering pixel dimensions through Paint’s Resize workflow, but that command resizes the image itself; use it only if you want the artwork to change size. If the dialog offers Maintain aspect ratio, Lock aspect ratio, or a similar checkbox, leave it on when scaling an image proportionally. Turn it off only when you deliberately need width and height set independently. A canvas can be rectangular without changing the artwork’s proportions; do not use image resizing simply to create extra blank space.

Resize the artwork instead of the canvas
If the whole image must meet a required resolution or upload size, use Resize on Paint’s toolbar:
- Open the image and select Resize.
- Choose Pixels for exact dimensions or Percentage for a proportional change.
- Enter the new width or height. Keep aspect-ratio preservation enabled if you do not want to distort the image.
- Confirm and inspect the result before saving.
Resizing changes the artwork, not just the empty area. Making an image larger can soften edges; making it smaller can make fine details or text harder to read. If the proportions are not preserved, a circle can become an oval or a person can look stretched. Paint supports image resizing; see Microsoft’s Paint page for its current product overview.

Shrink the canvas without losing work
Reducing canvas width or height can cut off anything beyond the new boundary. Before shrinking, save a separate copy. Open Image Properties (often Ctrl+E in current Paint guidance), enter the smaller dimensions, and confirm. Inspect the edges immediately. If important content has disappeared, press Ctrl+Z before doing anything else. Do not rely on being able to recover cropped content after saving over the original or closing the file.
Adjust the canvas with handles
Some Paint builds show small handles around the canvas. Drag a side handle to change one dimension or a corner handle to change both. Drag outward to make room; drag inward to reduce the area. This can be quick, but it is imprecise, and handle behavior is not identical in every version. Use numeric fields when dimensions must be exact or the image is unusually tall or wide.

That is a reported issue, not evidence that all builds or tall images behave this way. If the artwork stretches or disappears, undo immediately and try numeric entry instead. Center artwork or add space on just one side
Changing the canvas dimensions does not necessarily center the existing artwork or let you specify a precise offset from each edge. To position it deliberately, use this practical workaround:
- Press Ctrl+A to select the artwork, then Ctrl+C to copy it.
- Create or resize a canvas to the target dimensions.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste.
- Move the pasted selection where you want it—for example, centered, aligned to the left, or with room only on the right.
- Click outside the selection to commit it, then inspect the result.
Paste and selection behavior can vary with the Paint build, so confirm the placement before saving. For precise compositing or repeatable offsets, Paint may not offer the controls you need; a dedicated image editor is a better fit.
Crop unwanted edges
To keep a selected part and discard the surrounding edges, choose Select, drag around the area to retain, then choose Crop. Save to a new file if you need to preserve the full original. Cropping removes the outside area; it does not add blank space. For the general distinction between cropping and resizing, see Microsoft’s crop guidance (for Office, not Paint).

Troubleshooting
- The image stretched: You likely resized the whole image or turned off aspect-ratio preservation. Undo with Ctrl+Z; use canvas dimensions to add workspace, or preserve proportions when resizing the artwork.
- Part of the picture disappeared: The new canvas may be smaller than the artwork, or you may have cropped it. Undo immediately or reopen your saved copy.
- Width and height move together: Turn off the aspect-ratio lock only if you intend to set dimensions independently. The control’s label varies by build.
- The size is in percentages: Select Pixels in the unit control for exact dimensions.
- The canvas looks different but dimensions seem right: Check zoom. Zoom changes the view, not the file dimensions.
- Your screen does not match these steps: Paint differs across Windows 10, Windows 11, older desktop releases, and Store-updated builds. Maximize the window if controls are hidden, and look for equivalent names rather than relying on a particular toolbar position.
When Paint is not enough
Paint is suitable for straightforward raster edits. Consider a different editor if you need precise offsets from every edge, non-destructive layers or masks, dependable transparent padding, batch resizing, advanced resampling, print-resolution controls, or editable objects that remain separate rather than becoming part of a flattened picture.
Quick guide: Add blank space with canvas adjustment; scale the picture with Resize; remove edges with Crop; use pixels for exact dimensions; preserve aspect ratio to avoid distortion; and save a copy before reducing the canvas.
