On a Chromebook, Photoshop on the web is the browser-based option; Adobe’s desktop Photoshop requirements list Windows and macOS, not ChromeOS. The web editor handles many everyday image-editing tasks, but it does not include every desktop tool. Which one fits depends on the tools you need, your Chromebook’s specifications, your file and saving workflow, and whether your Adobe plan includes access.

1. Photoshop on the web runs in Chrome; desktop Photoshop is a different installation
Adobe lists ChromeOS 102 or later and Google Chrome among the requirements for Photoshop on the web. On a Chromebook, that means using the editor in a supported browser—not installing the desktop Photoshop application as a ChromeOS app.
Recommended Free Tools
Adobe’s desktop requirements list Windows and macOS. They do not establish official ChromeOS support for the desktop application. A Chromebook owner should therefore compare the web editor with desktop Photoshop as two different ways of working, rather than assuming the desktop edition is available on the Chromebook.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
2. The web editor covers common editing, but not every desktop tool
Adobe’s web and desktop feature comparison lists many familiar workflows for the web version, including cropping and transforming, object selection, layer masks, retouching, and adjustment layers. The comparison also lists Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Harmonize, Generative Upscale, and Generate Image for both versions. Some web functions are marked as limited, so shared feature names do not guarantee identical controls or capabilities.
Adobe lists these examples as desktop capabilities that are unavailable on the web:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Warp
- Magic Wand
- Actions
- Neural Filters
- Smart Filters
- Filter Gallery
- Print ordering
If a particular tool is essential—for example, an action-based batch process or a Smart Filter workflow—check its current status in Adobe’s feature comparison before choosing the web editor. If your work relies on the core tools Adobe lists for both, Photoshop on the web may cover the task without the desktop application.
3. Chromebook requirements matter, but they are not a performance guarantee
Adobe’s web requirements, last updated March 27, 2025, specify ChromeOS 102 or later, Google Chrome, 8 GB RAM, a 64-bit processor with four or more cores, and 6 GB of free space. Treat these as listed requirements, not a promise that every Chromebook meeting them will feel equally fast: Adobe does not provide a Chromebook performance benchmark in the cited materials.

- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
Browser storage settings can prevent the editor from working even when the device meets the listed specifications. Adobe warns that Chrome’s “Delete data when you close all windows” setting restricts site storage. Private browsing and enterprise storage quotas can also prevent access to the disk space Photoshop on the web needs.
4. File support overlaps, but saving is cloud-based
Adobe’s feature comparison lists the following formats for Photoshop on the web. Import and export support are not identical:

| Workflow | Formats listed by Adobe for the web version |
|---|---|
| Import | PSD, PSDC, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, HEIC, PSB, RAW, and WebP |
| Export | PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and WebP |
Adobe says web work saves to cloud documents. That suits work you want stored online and can hand off to desktop Photoshop, but it is different from treating the web editor as a local-only desktop workflow. Before starting a project, confirm that the specific format you need is supported for the direction you need—opening a file or exporting one—and that a cloud-document workflow works for you.
5. Access depends on an eligible plan; Adobe says there is no free web version
Adobe’s Photoshop on the web FAQ, last updated July 7, 2026, says the web editor is included in Photoshop plans and states, “There isn’t a free version of Photoshop on the web.” Check that your plan provides access rather than assuming the browser editor is freely available because it runs on a Chromebook.

Which version should you use on a Chromebook?
- Choose Photoshop on the web if your required tools appear in Adobe’s web feature list, your Chromebook meets the stated requirements, and cloud documents suit your workflow.
- Use desktop Photoshop on a supported Windows or macOS computer if your work depends on a desktop-only feature such as Actions, Neural Filters, Smart Filters, or Warp. Adobe’s listed desktop requirements do not include ChromeOS.
- Check before committing if you rely on a particular file format, a feature marked limited on the web, or an account plan whose access is unclear.
Adobe’s sources describe requirements and feature availability, not a universal winner, measured speed comparison, or price comparison. The practical difference is whether the web editor’s particular tools and cloud workflow meet the needs of your project.
