Pick ‘n’ Mix is a 2025 quilt pattern by Pam Schoessow, designed around 32 assorted 10-inch fabric squares and coordinating yardage. The original quilt finishes at 70½ inches square, with Baby, Twin, and Queen sizes also listed. Its six-week AllPeopleQuilt quilt-along ran from May 16 through June 26, 2025, so the group schedule has ended; the pattern may still be available through the publisher’s listed print, PDF, and magazine routes, subject to current stock and pricing.
What is the Pick ‘n’ Mix quilt?
Pick ‘n’ Mix is a precut-friendly quilt pattern by Pam Schoessow, featured in American Patchwork & Quilting’s 2025 quilt-along. The original sample uses fabrics from the Julia collection by Crystal Manning for Moda Fabrics. Its blocks and sashing create a playful patchwork design with a secondary Shoo Fly motif.

What fabric and supplies does the original quilt require?
The pattern is layer-cake friendly: it calls for 32 assorted medium and dark 10-inch squares, plus yardage. One pack of 10-inch squares can provide the precuts, but the listed coordinating fabrics are separate requirements; suitable fabric you already own can be used.
| Fabric or supply | Original-size requirement | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Assorted medium and dark prints | 32 10-inch squares | Blocks |
| Cream tone-on-tone | 2⅞ yards | Blocks and sashing |
| Cream-and-black print | 1⅝ yards | Blocks, sashing, and border |
| Cream-and-black stripe | ⅔ yard | Binding |
| Backing fabric | 4½ yards | Backing |
| Batting | 79-inch square | Batting |
The fabric amounts above are the original colorway’s published requirements. The APQShop listing specifies the batting size.

How do the light and dark background options differ?
In the original colorway, cream fabrics provide much of the background and sashing. The alternate version uses a dark print for the background, sashing, and borders, making the secondary Shoo Fly design more visible. AllPeopleQuilt describes the effect this way: “Using a dark print for the background, sashing, and borders makes the secondary Shoo Fly pattern in the sashing and block corners more prominent.”
The alternate colorway has its own requirements because the background fabric also makes the border:

| Fabric or supply | Dark-background requirement |
|---|---|
| Black print | 3⅞ yards |
| Assorted medium and dark prints | 32 10-inch squares |
| Brown print | ¾ yard |
| Binding fabric | ⅔ yard |
| Backing fabric | 4½ yards |
Choose the background based on the contrast you want: the publisher’s alternate makes the Shoo Fly secondary pattern stand out more, while using the original light-background arrangement gives that motif a subtler presence.
