A pincushion keeps sewing pins or needles together where you can retrieve them while you work. Choose a tabletop cushion for a fixed sewing spot, a wrist version if you want pins close at hand as you move, or a magnetic holder only after checking that your pins are compatible.

What is a pincushion used for?
A pincushion is a sewing accessory that holds pins or needles for convenient access. A pin box is another storage option. The South African Department of Basic Education’s Consumer Studies teacher guide lists both a pin box and a pincushion as places to store pins.
Which kind of pincushion should you choose?

The basic formats are described in a secondary encyclopedia reference and a wrist-pincushion pattern. The available sources do not establish that one format performs best overall, so base the choice on whether you want a stationary or wearable holder and, for a magnetic holder, whether your pins suit it.

How to make a wrist pincushion
Katagami’s pattern describes a standard-size wrist pincushion using two fabric circles and a strap. Its listed materials and approximate quantities are specific to that pattern, not universal requirements.
Materials for the pattern
- Cotton or linen fabric, about 15 cm × 25 cm
- A small amount of polyester stuffing or wool roving
- Hook-and-loop tape, 2 cm wide and 4 cm long
- Thread
Basic construction
- Cut two fabric circles for the cushion and prepare a strap.
- Sew the cushion pieces together, leaving an opening so you can turn the fabric right side out and add filling.
- Turn and stuff the cushion. The pattern advises filling it firmly and checking that a pin tip does not come through the opposite side.
- Close the opening with ladder stitch and attach the strap with the hook-and-loop tape as shown in the pattern instructions.
How should you store and care for pins?
The South African Department of Basic Education guide advises keeping pins away from moisture and discarding pins that are blunt or broken. It does not compare storage methods or quantify the effect of one method over another.

Pincushions in museum collections
Collected pincushions vary in materials and form. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History catalogs one object made with bark, chenille, and satin, and a separate “Make-Do” pincushion with a fabric cushion and glass base. These individual collection records illustrate variety; they are not evidence of what a typical pincushion looks like or of what size to buy.
