If a PNG or cutout looks wrong after pasting into Photoshop, first check what you copied: a whole layer, a selection, an Illustrator object, or an image file. A black-looking result, an unwanted edge fringe, and unexpected size or placement are different problems, so use the fix that matches the symptom rather than assuming Photoshop removed the PNG’s transparency.
For a halo, inspect the anti-aliased edge pixels; for a visibility problem, inspect the layer and its mask; for a file you simply need to import, open or place the PNG directly. Menu names and available options can vary by Photoshop version.

Start by identifying what you copied
Photoshop handles a copied Photoshop layer differently from a copied selection. Adobe documents that copying and pasting a layer between documents can transfer layer data, including bitmap or vector masks and effects. A selection paste transfers the selected region; do not assume it carries the same layer structure.

- Identify whether the source is a complete Photoshop layer, a selected region, an Illustrator object, or a PNG file.
- If the source is a Photoshop layer, select and copy the layer itself when you need its layer data, masks, or effects.
- If you copied a selection, inspect its boundary and the destination document’s active selection before judging the result.
- If you are importing a PNG file, open or place that file directly rather than treating a copied selection or preview as equivalent.
Check a black or opaque-looking result
There is no single documented cause for every black rectangle or apparent loss of transparency. Check the actual source and the workflow: confirm that the file or layer has transparent areas, that you copied the intended content, and that a mask is not hiding or revealing unexpected parts of the layer.

- Inspect the source before copying. If it is a PNG file, open it directly in Photoshop and check whether its background is actually transparent.
- If copying from a Photoshop document, check whether you copied the whole layer or only a selection.
- Inspect the layer and mask thumbnails. A layer mask controls visibility without erasing the underlying pixels.
- If you need to create a mask from transparency, use Photoshop’s layer-mask workflow rather than deleting pixels by guesswork.
On a layer mask, white reveals, black conceals, and gray creates partial transparency. Painting on the mask changes what is visible; it does not change the underlying image pixels.
Fix dark or light fringes around edges
A fringe is not automatically evidence of missing transparency. Adobe explains that when you move or paste an anti-aliased selection, some pixels around its border can come with it. Those edge pixels may retain colors from the original background, making a halo visible against a different background.

- View the subject against a contrasting background so the fringe is easier to see.
- Choose the command that matches the matte color or the broader fringe problem.
- Review the result at the edge, especially around fine or soft details.
- If the correction is not suitable, undo it and use a layer mask for an editable visibility adjustment.
Use a mask when you need to refine what is visible without erasing the original pixels. A mask can help control an edge, but it does not restore source color information that was already lost.
Use masks for reversible visibility edits
A layer mask is useful when the subject is present but parts need to be hidden or revealed. It keeps the underlying image available while you adjust visibility. White on the active mask reveals the layer, black hides it, and gray makes it partially transparent.
- Select the layer’s mask thumbnail so edits affect the mask rather than the image pixels.
- Paint with black to conceal, white to reveal, or gray for partial visibility.
- Check the result against contrasting backgrounds and refine the mask as needed.
Check selection and document differences
A destination selection can affect where pasted content appears. Photoshop’s Paste Into and Paste Outside workflows use mask behavior, so check whether a selection is active if the paste is constrained or unexpectedly hidden.

Document differences can also change how pasted content appears. Adobe notes that layer pixel dimensions are retained when copying between documents with different resolutions, so the object can look larger or smaller in the destination. A color-profile mismatch may prompt a dialog, but that is a color-management issue rather than proof that transparency was lost.
- Check for an active selection in the destination document and clear or adjust it if needed.
- Compare the source and destination document resolution and pixel dimensions.
- Review any profile warning separately from transparency and edge problems.
When the source is Illustrator artwork
Illustrator paste options affect how artwork transfers and whether it remains editable or is rasterized. This is a different workflow from diagnosing a normal PNG file.

Unsupported Illustrator properties may be rasterized. Choose a paste or placement mode based on whether you need pixels or editable object data; switching to Smart Object is not a universal fix for an opaque or damaged PNG.

FAQ
Why does a pasted PNG look like it has a black background?
There is no universal cause. Check whether the source itself has transparency, whether you copied the intended layer or selection, and whether a mask affects visibility.
Why does a pasted image have a dark or white outline?
Anti-aliased edge pixels may retain colors from the original background. Use Remove Black Matte or Remove White Matte for a matching matte, or Defringe or Color Decontaminate for other fringe problems.
Should I erase the fringe pixels?
Do not make destructive erasing the default. Use the appropriate edge correction, or use a layer mask when you need an editable visibility adjustment.

Why does pasted content look larger or smaller?
Copied layer pixel dimensions are retained across documents with different resolutions, which can change how large the content appears. Compare the source and destination document resolutions and pixel dimensions.
Does a Smart Object fix lost PNG transparency?
No. Smart Object and Illustrator paste options concern object transfer and editability; they are not a demonstrated universal repair for a PNG whose transparency or edge data is wrong.
