Wintergatan’s Marble Machine is a handmade musical instrument built by Swedish musician Martin Molin. Its 2016 performance video shows a physical machine creating music; Wintergatan’s “How It Works” video and project history are the best sources for understanding the build without mistaking later Marble Machine X details for original-machine specifications.
The performance title describes it as using “2000 marbles,” but that is the creator’s title framing, not an independently audited count. The original machine is a project, not a commercially established appliance or a generic marble-run toy.
What is Wintergatan’s Marble Machine?
Martin Molin began building the Marble Machine in 2014, according to a retrospective from Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett. Wintergatan published a video showing the machine in action in 2016. Its combination of visible motion and musical performance made the instrument widely recognizable.

Wintergatan’s project chronology and official “How It Works – Part 1” video are the strongest sources for learning about the original. The chronology documents the build and its milestones, while the explainer offers a first-party visual account. A video title or build milestone can establish that a topic was covered, but it should not be treated as a complete technical specification.
How does the Marble Machine work?
At a high level, the Marble Machine uses moving balls and mechanical parts to produce musical events. Wintergatan’s official explainer is the best place to see how the original machine’s mechanisms work. A secondary description discusses a hand-turned programming drum, levers, a ball-bearing lift and return, and instruments including a vibraphone; treat those details as a guide to what to look for in the first-party video, not as a full verified specification.

- Start with the official explainer: Watch Wintergatan’s “How It Works – Part 1” for a visual introduction to the original machine.
- Follow the project chronology: Check the Marble Machine Journey for the order of the original build and its documented milestones.
- Compare with the performance: Watch the original performance and connect the visible movement to the explanation, while keeping in mind that a performance video is not a complete technical manual.
How many marbles does it use?
Wintergatan’s 2016 performance video is titled “Wintergatan – Marble Machine (music instrument using 2000 marbles).” That supports saying the machine was presented with a 2,000-marble description. The supplied research did not establish an independently audited count, so the figure should not be treated as a verified specification.

What can the build history tell us?
Wintergatan’s project chronology records a long build and identifies milestones such as lifting mechanisms, a flywheel, a kick drum, and the machine’s 2016 completion. These entries show the range of components and topics covered in the build series, but do not by themselves establish every detail of the finished machine’s construction.

A museum retrospective says the original Marble Machine and the later Marble Machine X did not ultimately go on tour as hoped. It notes that the original could still appear in exhibitions, but that account does not establish a specific present-day location or schedule.
Original Marble Machine versus Marble Machine X
The original Marble Machine and Marble Machine X (MMX) are separate Wintergatan projects. The official project history places the original build and its 2016 performance before the long MMX build sequence. Do not assume that a component, figure, or capability described for MMX also applies to the original.

| Project | What the research establishes | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Original Marble Machine | Martin Molin began building it in 2014; Wintergatan published a performance video in 2016. | That a video title’s marble count is an audited specification. |
| Marble Machine X | A separate, later Wintergatan project with its own build sequence. | That MMX components or specifications belong to the original. |
Could you build one?
A small project inspired by the Marble Machine could be a maker experiment, but it would not be an official replica or a confirmed Wintergatan design. Steel ball bearings may be considered as a material for a modest prototype; the supplied research does not establish them as a verified specification for the original or identify a complete kit, plan set, or compatible-parts catalog.
