POSCA markers are water-based paint markers available in several tip shapes and sizes. Choose a tip for the scale of your work, prime it before drawing, and plan for the surface: POSCA says the paint is permanent on porous materials but erasable on most smooth, non-porous ones. That distinction—not the marker alone—determines whether a finished design needs protection.
What POSCA markers are
POSCA describes its markers as water-based markers containing stable pigments that can be applied to many materials. That broad compatibility does not mean the paint behaves identically everywhere: adhesion, permanence, drying and care depend on the surface and its finish. POSCA’s current range page lists 66 colours; colours and model availability can change, so check the current POSCA range for the lineup where you shop.

How to choose a POSCA tip
Match the tip to the mark you need and the size of the surface. POSCA’s descriptions are manufacturer guidance, not comparative independent test results.
| Model | Tip | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| PC-1MC | Very fine | Small-format work and fine details, according to POSCA’s range guide. |
| PC-3M | Fine bullet | Coloring, line drawing, ornamentation and detailed decoration. See the PC-3M product page. |
| PC-5M | Medium bullet | General drawing and customizing porous or irregular surfaces. POSCA calls it the range’s most versatile model; its tip is reversible and replaceable. See the PC-5M product page. |
| PC-7M | Broad bullet | Broader marks than a fine or medium bullet tip. |
| PC-8K | Broad chisel | Curves and covering larger areas, according to POSCA. |
| PC-17K | Rectangular extra-large | Flat color and backgrounds. |
| PC-5BR, PCF-350, PC-1MR, PCM-22 | Brush, soft brush, calibrated precise, and large round, respectively | Alternative mark shapes; check the current range for details and regional availability. |
- For small details, start with a fine or very fine tip.
- For a single general-purpose marker, consider the PC-5M medium bullet; “versatile” does not mean it is ideal for every scale or mark.
- For large fills, look at broad or extra-large tips; a chisel tip also gives a different edge and stroke than a bullet tip.
- If you want brushlike movement, compare the brush-tip options in the current range.
How to prime and use a POSCA marker
- Shake with the cap on. POSCA says the internal ball mixes the paint. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Prime on spare paper. Press the tip several times until paint fills it; avoid pumping directly on your artwork.
- Test the flow. Check the line on scrap before moving to the final surface.
- Draw, then recap. Keep the cap firmly on between uses.
If flow slows while working, cap the marker, shake it again, and re-prime on scrap paper. POSCA says paint can be layered, mixed while wet and diluted with a damp brush for gradient effects. If you want a new layer to cover without disturbing the one beneath, let the first layer dry before adding more paint. POSCA says drying is generally faster on porous surfaces and usually takes no more than a few minutes, but that is not a guaranteed time: the material and conditions vary. See its effects guide and FAQ.

How POSCA paint behaves on different surfaces
POSCA’s general rule is that paint is permanent on porous materials and erasable on most smooth, non-porous materials. Coatings, treatments, texture and wear can change the result. If the finish matters, test a small, inconspicuous area first—especially on treated, coated, scratched or unusual surfaces.
Paper and cardboard
POSCA says no special preparation is needed and that its paint adheres permanently to paper and cardboard. It says a fixative is not needed; water-based spray varnish is optional if you want to optimize long-term conservation. Consult its paper and cardboard guidance.

Wood
POSCA says wood can be customized and recommends water-based aerosol varnish for protection. Its advice is specific to protecting work on wood; it is not a requirement to seal every POSCA project. Check the finish on a discreet area before applying varnish across a finished piece.
Ceramics and porcelain
According to POSCA, paint is permanent on rough ceramics, while treated ceramics may allow it to be erased. “Ceramic” alone does not determine permanence: the surface treatment matters. Test before committing to a design.

Glass and windows
POSCA says window art can be wiped away with a damp rag. On old or scratched glass, pigment may become caught in scratches, so removal may not be as straightforward as it is on a smooth pane.
Fabric
For fabric designs, POSCA recommends ironing the material inside out without steam. It also suggests washing it inside out at a low temperature for care. These are the manufacturer’s instructions; test on a discreet area if the fabric or finish is unusual.
How to care for POSCA markers
- Replace the cap firmly after use to help prevent the tip from drying out.
- If a tip dries, POSCA says it can be soaked in water and then re-primed.
- Most POSCA tips are washable, and several models have replaceable tips. The PC-3M and PC-5M tips are reversible.
- POSCA recommends storing its brush-tipped marker horizontally.
For model-specific handling and care details, use the official instructions and FAQ.
Can you use POSCA markers on skin?
No. POSCA says its markers are artistic creation tools, are not certified for cosmetic use and must not be used on skin. This is the manufacturer’s stated safety guidance; do not use them as face or body paint.
