It works especially well with clean, high-contrast logos, icons, silhouettes, line drawings, signatures, and scanned lettering. It is not a general-purpose photograph-to-vector converter: colorful, shaded, textured, or low-contrast images usually need preprocessing, separate color layers, or a different tool.

The most reliable workflow is prepare the bitmap, trace it, then inspect and clean the resulting paths. Potrace 1.16 is the version listed on the project’s official previous-releases page, released September 17, 2019; that makes Potrace a mature, comparatively stable project rather than a fast-moving one. Check the official release listing for current project information.
What Potrace is—and what it is not
A raster image is made from pixels. A vector image describes shapes with paths, curves, fills, and strokes. Enlarging a raster image eventually reveals pixelation; enlarging a vector path does not introduce that same resolution-dependent blockiness.
Potrace analyzes the boundary between foreground and background pixels, constructs paths around those regions, and fits the boundaries with curves. Its technical paper describes a process based on polygon tracing followed by curve construction and optimization. The result is a geometric reconstruction of the bitmap—not a recovered, perfectly editable version of the original artwork.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That distinction matters. Potrace does not understand that a shape is a letter, circle, logo, or object, and it does not restore photographic detail. It traces the information present in the bitmap. A noisy scan can therefore become a noisy vector with many nodes, false holes, or broken contours.
The standalone program is a focused command-line executable. libpotrace is the reusable tracing library, while applications such as Inkscape provide a graphical environment for tracing, editing, and exporting artwork.
Potrace-generated SVG files contain vector path data. Simply changing image.png to image.svg, or placing a PNG inside an SVG container, does not vectorize the image. You can inspect an SVG in a text editor and look for <path> elements to confirm that it contains traced geometry rather than merely an embedded raster.
Supported input and output formats
The standalone Potrace executable’s documented native bitmap inputs are:
- PBM
- PGM
- PPM
- BMP
- Related PNM variants
PNG, JPEG, and TIFF are common source formats, but they normally need to be converted first. A graphical front end or an external conversion pipeline may accept more formats than the standalone executable; do not confuse that convenience with Potrace’s native input support.
Potrace can generate several output formats:
| Backend | Typical use |
|---|---|
| SVG | Web, illustration, and general vector editing |
| Print and document workflows | |
| EPS | Legacy print and publishing workflows |
| PostScript | PostScript-based production |
| DXF | CAD, CNC, and some laser workflows |
| GeoJSON | Geographic or path-processing workflows |
| PGM | Raster rendering and antialiasing workflows |
| GIMP path | Importing paths into GIMP |
| XFig | XFig-compatible technical illustration |
SVG is the most broadly useful choice for modern design work. DXF requires more caution: Potrace approximates Bézier curves with piecewise circular arcs, and different CAD or CAM programs may interpret units, open contours, duplicate lines, and curves differently. Always inspect a DXF in the software that will drive the machine before fabrication. See the official Potrace manual for backend details.

Install Potrace
Build from source
On a Unix-like system, the project documents the conventional build sequence:
./configure
make
sudo make install
To build and install the reusable library and headers as well, use:
./configure --with-libpotrace
The project documents zlib as a dependency for PostScript Level 3 compression. Consult the official repository for platform-specific build information.
Windows
The project’s Windows instructions describe ZIP distributions containing potrace.exe and mkbitmap.exe. Put their directory on PATH, or invoke each executable with its full path. Check whether you are using Command Prompt or PowerShell, quote paths containing spaces, and confirm that the downloaded binary matches your system.
For macOS and Linux, package-manager versions may be convenient but can lag behind the upstream release. Check what is actually installed:

Prepare a bitmap before tracing
Input preparation usually determines the quality of the result more than a minor Potrace setting. A practical sequence is:
- Crop unnecessary margins.
- Convert to grayscale.
- Increase contrast and remove uneven background tone.
- Remove paper texture, JPEG artifacts, and isolated noise.
- Threshold the image into black and white.
- Remove unwanted speckles and repair disconnected strokes.
- Upscale very small artwork before thresholding if its edges are too crude.
- Save as BMP, PBM, PGM, or another supported format.
For example, an ImageMagick-style command can create a bilevel BMP:
magick input.png
-colorspace Gray
-threshold 55%
-type bilevel
prepared.bmp
The threshold is not universal. A photographed logo on gray paper may need background removal, masking, or manual cleanup before thresholding. Uneven lighting, antialiasing, low resolution, compression artifacts, and broken strokes can all change the topology of the traced paths.

Using mkbitmap
mkbitmap is Potrace’s companion preprocessing program. It can scale and filter grayscale or color sources before producing a bitmap suitable for tracing. The two-stage pipeline is:

Because packaged builds and versions can differ, check the installed program’s options instead of copying an outdated command:
mkbitmap --help
Convert a bitmap to SVG
Once you have a supported bitmap, the shortest working command is:
potrace input.bmp --svg --output output.svg
Using short options:
potrace input.bmp -s -o output.svg
Open the resulting SVG in a browser or vector editor. Inspect it at the size where it will actually be used, then check for unwanted holes, excessive nodes, disconnected pieces, and contours that should have been joined.
Generate PDF, EPS, or DXF
potrace input.bmp -b pdf -o output.pdf
potrace input.bmp -b eps -o output.eps
potrace input.bmp -b dxf -o output.dxf
For manufacturing, do not assume that a successful export guarantees a usable cut file. Verify the units and physical scale, remove duplicate geometry, check whether contours are open or closed, and confirm how the destination CAD or CAM application interprets the paths.

The Potrace options that matter most
Remove speckles with --turdsize
--turdsize (or -t) suppresses small isolated components. Its documented default is 2.
potrace input.bmp -s -t 10 -o output.svg
Increase the value when scan noise creates many tiny paths, but inspect the result carefully: legitimate small details can disappear too.
Preserve sharper corners with --alphamax
--alphamax (or -a) controls the corner threshold. Lower values tend to preserve sharper corners, while higher values encourage smoother curves. The documented default is 1.
potrace input.bmp -s --alphamax 0.5 -o sharper.svg
A lower value is not automatically better. It can preserve unwanted bitmap noise or create more complex paths.

Simplify curves with --opttolerance
--opttolerance (or -O) controls curve-optimization tolerance. The documented default is 0.2. A higher value can reduce path complexity while allowing the optimized curve to move farther from the traced boundary.
potrace input.bmp -s --opttolerance 0.4 -o simpler.svg
If optimization removes important local detail, --longcurve (or -n) disables curve optimization, usually at the cost of more complex output.
Resolve ambiguous regions with --turnpolicy
When narrow regions or touching shapes create ambiguous pixel decisions, --turnpolicy (or -z) controls how Potrace chooses a path direction. Available policies include black, white, left, right, minority, majority, and random.
If a logo develops an unexpected hole or two regions connect incorrectly, try a different threshold, clean the bitmap manually, or test another turn policy.
Reverse foreground and background with --invert
potrace input.bmp -s --invert -o output.svg
Inversion changes which bitmap regions Potrace treats as foreground. It is not simply the same as changing the fill color after tracing.
Control physical size and resolution
For dimension-based outputs, use explicit dimensions where possible:
potrace input.bmp -s --width 100mm -o output.svg
You can also specify input resolution:
potrace input.bmp -s --resolution 300 -o output.svg
Potrace accepts units such as inches, centimeters, and points. If no resolution is supplied, the bitmap’s assumed resolution can affect physical sizing; man-page versions document a default assumption of 72 dpi. Backend behavior and destination software also matter. For print, CAD, laser cutting, and CNC work, specify a dimension or resolution explicitly and verify the measured result downstream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Batch conversion
For one output file per bitmap, use an explicit loop rather than assuming that every backend handles multiple inputs identically.
Recommended Free Tools
Bash

done
PowerShell
Get-ChildItem *.bmp | ForEach-Object {
potrace $_.FullName --svg --output ($_.DirectoryName + "\" + $_.BaseName + ".svg")

Potrace can process multiple bitmap files, but concatenation, pagination, and multi-page behavior depend on the selected backend and options. Quote filenames so spaces and special characters do not break the command.

Tracing color images
A basic Potrace run is best understood as monochrome tracing: it extracts foreground and background regions rather than automatically reconstructing a full-color illustration.
For a multicolor logo, separate the artwork into color layers, threshold or isolate each layer, trace every layer independently, and reassemble the paths in a vector editor. The layers must be aligned carefully, especially where antialiasing or overlaps create gaps.
This approach can work for flat-color artwork, but Potrace is a poor fit for photographs, paintings, gradients, shadows, textured illustrations, and images in which color relationships—not silhouettes—carry the important information.

| Choose | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Potrace | You need lightweight, offline, repeatable command-line tracing, batch processing, direct SVG/PDF/EPS/DXF output, or a reusable library. |
| Inkscape | You want a GUI, visual tracing controls, manual node editing, multiple color layers, and broader illustration features. |
| Adobe Illustrator | You need professional production editing, typography, color workflows, and integration with a commercial design ecosystem. |
| Vector Magic | You want a dedicated, more approachable raster-to-vector workflow and are comfortable checking current pricing and privacy terms. |
Inkscape is not simply a universally “better Potrace.” It is a larger application that surrounds bitmap tracing with preview, editing, layout, and export tools. Potrace is often the better choice for a scripted pipeline or a server-side batch job.
Online converters can be convenient for one-off work, but review retention, training, commercial-use, export, and confidentiality terms before uploading artwork. Offline tools are generally preferable for unreleased designs, client files, and sensitive scans.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “My PNG does not work.” | PNG is not among the standalone executable’s documented native inputs. | Convert it to BMP, PBM, PGM, or PPM, then threshold and clean it. |
| Hundreds of tiny paths | Scan noise, JPEG artifacts, textured background, or overly aggressive thresholding. | Clean the source and try --turdsize; check that valid details were not removed. |
| Missing details | Details were smaller than the bitmap resolution or removed as speckles. | Start with a higher-resolution source, reduce --turdsize, and adjust the threshold. |
| Wrong holes or connected regions | Foreground polarity or ambiguous pixel boundaries. | Try another threshold, --invert, a different --turnpolicy, or manual bitmap cleanup. |
| Too rounded | Curve fitting is smoothing corners. | Try a lower --alphamax, then inspect for increased noise or path complexity. |
| Too detailed or too large | Many boundary segments or insufficient curve optimization. | Try higher --opttolerance and judge the result at its intended size. |
| Wrong physical size | DPI assumptions, dimensions, backend behavior, or destination-app interpretation. | Set --width, --height, or --resolution, then measure the output downstream. |
| DXF differs from SVG | Backend-specific curve approximation and CAD/CAM interpretation. | Inspect arcs, units, scale, duplicate lines, and open contours in the target application. |
| Windows cannot find the command | The executable is not on PATH, or the path is unquoted. |
Use the full path, add the binary directory to PATH, and quote filenames containing spaces. |
Using libpotrace in software
Since Potrace 1.6, the core tracing functionality has been separated into libpotrace. The library and its headers expose operations for creating default tracing parameters, tracing a bitmap, accessing the resulting paths, reading Bézier curves and corner segments, freeing generated state, and querying the library version.
The returned geometry is organized into path structures with curve data and child/sibling relationships. Developers can use this information to create their own exporters or integrate tracing into another application. The project’s API documentation is available in the libpotrace manual, with declarations in potracelib.h.
Potrace is GPL-licensed. Developers embedding it in distributed software should review the exact license text and their linking and distribution model with qualified legal counsel. Do not assume that static or dynamic linking automatically avoids GPL obligations. See the project’s COPYING file.
Final verdict
Potrace remains an excellent tool for turning clean monochrome bitmaps into smooth paths, particularly when automation, offline processing, repeatability, or direct SVG/DXF generation matters. Its strongest workflow is:
- Prepare and threshold the source.
- Trace it with an explicit output backend.
- Tune noise, corners, optimization, polarity, and sizing as needed.
- Inspect and clean the vector in the destination application.
Use Inkscape or a commercial vectorizer when you need interactive cleanup, automatic color handling, object recognition, or a less technical workflow. “Vector” describes the output geometry; it does not guarantee that the result is clean, simple, semantically editable, or ready for production without inspection.
