“Prints of Egypt” can mean original historical images of Egyptian places and antiquities, or modern reproductions made for collecting and display. The distinction matters: an antique impression has a history as an object, while a reproduction brings an older image into a contemporary format. David Roberts’s nineteenth-century views offer a way to understand both—and to shop for reproductions without mistaking them for originals.
What does “prints of Egypt” mean?
The phrase covers several kinds of work: lithographs and other printed images depicting Egypt, photographs sold to travelers and collectors, and present-day reproductions of historic images. It can also be used loosely for contemporary Egyptian-themed wall art. These categories overlap in subject, but they are not interchangeable in origin or collecting value.

- Historical original: an impression produced in the period, with an identifiable maker, publisher, process and provenance where known.
- Modern reproduction: a later copy or reprint of an older image, sold as a portfolio plate, loose art print or canvas, among other formats.
- Egyptian Revival imagery: Western decorative art that adapts Egyptian motifs; it is related to Egyptian subject matter but is not necessarily a print made in or about Egypt.
When assessing a work, distinguish the person who created the image from the printmaker who translated it into a reproducible process and the publisher who issued it. A product page may name only one or two of these roles.
David Roberts and the making of an Egyptian print
David Roberts provides a clear example of how an image could pass through several hands. He traveled in Egypt in 1838, making studies that informed a series of views of monuments, landscapes and people. A Cleveland Museum of Art color lithograph dated 1847, Egypt and Nubia, Volume II: Fragments of the Great Colossi at the Memnonium, Thebes, was made by Louis Haghe after Roberts and published by F. G. Moon. Roberts was the image-maker; Haghe was the lithographer; Moon was the publisher. This division of labor helps explain why a print may credit an artist whose hand did not make the physical impression. In lithography, an image is drawn on a prepared surface and transferred through printing; the resulting process allowed images to circulate beyond a single drawing. Roberts’s travel-based scenes therefore became part of a published series rather than remaining only as sketches or paintings.
What to know about the image itself
Historic travel imagery should not be treated as a neutral record. Roberts’s images are artistic interpretations as well as depictions of place. For example, Bristol Museums notes that in his image of the Temple of Dendera, he embellished eroded faces on the temple columns for dramatic effect. That detail is useful when comparing a printed view with the surviving monument: the print tells you about both the subject and the artist’s choices. Prints, photography and the way Egypt was represented
Egyptian imagery traveled through more than lithography. Archaeological photography also became a retail product: studios in Egypt and the Levant sold photographs in large numbers, making images available to people who had not visited the sites. The University of Chicago’s 2025 exhibition Staging the East: Orientalist Photography in Chicago Collections discusses that circulation and the colonial biases embedded in many Western depictions of West Asia and North Africa. When looking at nineteenth-century photographs or travel prints, consider who made and sold the image, who its intended audience was, and what perspective it presents—not only whether the monument is recognizable. A related but distinct history is Egyptian Revival design in the West. Egyptian motifs such as obelisks, hieroglyphs, sphinxes and pyramids entered American architecture, furniture and decorative arts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art traces the influence of the first volumes of Le Description de l’Égypte, published in 1809 with large folio prints of scenes and antiquities, and later revivals, including the effect of Tutankhamun’s tomb discovery in 1922 on Art Deco design. Where to find reproductions of Egyptian prints
For wall art or a gift, modern reproductions are more straightforward to buy than historical originals. The available examples here represent different formats; none should be described as an antique impression unless the seller explicitly identifies it as one and supports that claim.
A set of prints: The Pyramids Portfolio
American University in Cairo Press’s The Pyramids Portfolio is a 2011 gift-edition paperback cataloged with ten color plates, described by the publisher as fine art prints on high-quality paper suitable for framing. It is a reproduction portfolio, not a set of original antique prints. A single museum-shop image: Roberts’s Temple of Dendera
Bristol Museums offers a contemporary reproduction of Roberts’s The Temple of Dendera, Upper Egypt. Its page lists art-print options, canvas, multiple sizes and frame choices. The available formats, prices and stock can change, so use the live listing for current details. The museum also notes Roberts’s artistic embellishment of the eroded column faces, a useful interpretive detail when buying the image as a historical view rather than a literal architectural record. The Griffith Institute says highlights from its archive—including watercolors, paintings, drawings and early photography connected with Egypt—are available through its shop on Art UK. How to compare an Egypt print before buying
Compare the object you will receive, not just the image shown on screen. A portfolio, loose paper print and canvas are different products, even if they reproduce the same artwork.
- Authenticity: Is it identified as a period impression or a modern reproduction? For an alleged original, look for a specific date, printmaker, publisher and provenance rather than relying on the image’s age or subject.
- Image and attribution: Who made the original image, who printed it, and who is selling the present edition? Where roles are known, keep them separate.
- Format and dimensions: Confirm whether the listing is for a bound portfolio, loose print or canvas, and check the actual size of the image and any border.
- Framing and materials: Check whether a frame is included and what the listing actually says about paper, canvas or other materials. Do not infer archival properties or color fidelity from a product photograph.
- Retailer and availability: Confirm the seller, shipping geography, current price and stock on the live listing; these details can change.
- Context: If historical accuracy matters, check whether the image is an artistic interpretation, photograph or decorative adaptation. A print can be visually compelling without being a literal record.
The available product information does not establish a shared quality standard across modern sellers, so it does not support a reliable claim that one reproduction is superior to another. Judge each listing by its stated format, dimensions, materials and provenance.
