For a simple decorative piranha, shape air-dry clay into a rounded fish body, add fins, then give it a broad mouth and pointed teeth. Let the sculpture dry fully before painting it with acrylics. You’ll need white air-dry modeling clay, a toothpick or pointed modeling tool, acrylic paint, and a small brush. Polymer clay is another option, but it must be cured according to its package directions.

This walkthrough uses air-dry clay so you can avoid a baking step. The design is a stylized craft interpretation rather than an anatomically exact piranha.

- White air-dry modeling clay.
- A toothpick or pointed modeling tool for the mouth, fin lines, and surface details. Pottery tools are another option.
- Acrylic paint and a small brush for the dried sculpture.
Shape the piranha
1. Form the body
Knead a small piece of clay until it is workable. Roll it into a rounded fish shape with a broad front for the head and a gently tapered rear. This adapts a general fish-sculpting approach; it is not a piranha-specific template.

2. Add the fins
Flatten small pieces of clay to make a forked tail and two side fins. Press them onto the body and smooth the joins with a fingertip or tool. Use a toothpick or pointed tool to score simple lines in the fins to suggest rays.
3. Define the face
Use a pointed tool to mark a broad mouth. Add a short row of small pointed teeth, keeping them simple enough to shape and attach securely. Strong jaws and finely serrated teeth are characteristic visual cues described in the Piranha reference; these clay teeth are a simplified decorative feature, not a scale-accurate model.

Add two small raised eyes and a few short gill marks behind the head. Keep these details clear but restrained so the mouth remains the most noticeable feature.

For air-dry clay, allow the finished piece to dry completely before painting. Drying time depends on the clay and the sculpture, so follow the clay package rather than assuming a fixed duration. The cited fish project recommends acrylic paint. Apply it with a small brush, working around the mouth, fins, and eyes without obscuring the details.

If you chose polymer clay instead, do not use air-dry instructions: follow the specific product’s curing directions for both temperature and time.
