PunkinBot was a family-built pumpkin-carving robot, not a documented commercial product. In 2012, coverage described a father-and-sons team from Goshen, Indiana, developing two versions of a machine that rotated a pumpkin while a robotic arm guided a carving tool across its surface.

What was PunkinBot?
Brian, Alex, and Eric VanDiepenbos built PunkinBot as a maker project. Make: introduced it as “The CNC Pumpkin Carving Machine,” reporting that the family adapted the concept of EMSL’s Egg-Bot for a much larger subject: a pumpkin. The early machine made its first cut at Maker Faire Detroit, where it was described as wobbly. Alex VanDiepenbos recalled, “While the machine was a bit wobbly and tempermental, it proved our concept could work,” preserving the spelling used in EDN’s 2012 account. How did the reported v2.0 carve a pumpkin?
The v2.0 arrangement combined a rotating pumpkin mount with a tool-carrying robotic arm. The pumpkin sat on a central spike. Stepper motors moved the arm up and down, advanced or retracted the tool, and rotated the pumpkin to bring different areas under the cutter. The design was converted into code and imported into Mach 3, which controlled motor movement, according to EDN.

Surface carving, not full-thickness cutting
The machine used a Dremel tool to shave the pumpkin’s outer layer rather than cut all the way through its shell. The family believed leaving the inner shell intact would make the jack-o’-lantern brighter by keeping light from dispersing through a full cut; that is their reported rationale, not a published test result.
Designs and reported process time
EDN said v2.0 could carve traditional faces as well as skulls, bats, wolves, and Frankenstein designs. The article reported 15 minutes for the process from start to finish. That is a figure from the 2012 coverage, not an independently verified benchmark or a current performance specification.

How the project developed
From v1.0 to v2.0
EDN reported that the family built its first prototype in about two months, using mostly PVC pipe and wood. After showing that version at Detroit Maker Faire, they worked toward v2.0 with improved materials, a simpler frame, and a more user-friendly design.

EDN said the family used v2.0 to sell carved pumpkins at Pumpkin Fantasyland in Ligonier, Indiana, during October. Alex VanDiepenbos also said they hoped to adapt the machine for round fruit such as watermelon and cantaloupe. The account establishes that as an ambition, not that the family later produced or sold those carvings.

PunkinBot and a separate 2021 CNC project
A later project should not be mistaken for a PunkinBot revision. Andrew Gutierrez and Chris Dalke documented a separate pumpkin-carving CNC build in October 2021. Its GitHub repository describes a machine using Grbl, an Arduino Uno, and a rotary table, alongside SolidWorks CAD files and Python scripts that generate G-code from an input image. The authors call their build a rushed one-off that is far from reproducible.

The 2012 coverage documents a historical maker project, not current commercial availability. It does not establish present-day sales, maintenance or support, or authoritative build instructions. The later 2021 repository belongs to a separate project, so its files should not be treated as PunkinBot plans.
