The best artist backpack is the one that fits your largest sketchbook, pad or drawing board—and carries your tools without adding unnecessary weight. Start with the dimensions of what you actually carry, not a bag’s “artist” label or laptop-size claim. The examples below serve different needs; the available specifications do not establish a universal winner or compare comfort and durability.
How to choose an artist backpack
- Measure your largest flat item. Record its height, width and thickness, then compare those measurements with the backpack’s internal dimensions and opening. A laptop compartment size does not confirm that an A3 pad, portfolio or rigid drawing board will fit.
- Match the layout to your supplies. One open compartment gives you room to arrange bulky items; divided sections and smaller pockets can keep a tablet, pencils and other small tools separate. Check that compartments suit your actual kit rather than relying on pocket count alone.
- Account for the full load. Add up your supplies, devices and the empty bag’s weight. A protective camera pack can be useful if you carry camera gear, but its structure and weight may be unnecessary for a sketchbook-and-pencil load.
- Check the protection claim carefully. Padding, closures, water-repellent fabric and a supplied weather cover are different features. “Water-resistant” or “water-repellent” does not mean the whole backpack is waterproof.
Artists commonly want a bag that can combine sketchbooks, pencil cases and a laptop, while others need room for A3 sheets; these are examples of reader concerns, not survey findings. One backpack discussion reflects the format-fit question that a laptop label alone cannot answer.

Which type makes sense for your kit?
Choose a mixed-gear layout for supplies plus devices
The ASUS ProArt’s divided main compartment and small-item pockets are relevant if your load combines creative materials with a laptop or tablet. Its listed 17-inch laptop compartment is a device-fit specification, not a guarantee that an equally large sketchbook or board will fit. ASUS also publishes claims of 80% energy saved during production compared with a normal bag and 160 g of plastic saved per bag. The cited page does not state the year or comparison methodology for those claims, so treat them as manufacturer statements rather than independent findings.
Choose a camera pack only when camera protection is part of the job
The Lowepro Pro Trekker is the more specialized option for carrying cameras and lenses with other gear. Configurable dividers and an all-weather cover address camera organization and weather protection; they do not establish protection for every art material or a fit for large flat paper. Its 2.7 kg listed empty weight is a meaningful trade-off before adding any equipment.

Do not rely on an “art” name for size
The Kipling Art Backpack’s name does not show that it carries large-format paper. Its search-result dimensions are external dimensions, and the accessible evidence does not establish internal measurements or opening width. Measure and verify before choosing it for sketchbooks, boards or pads that approach those dimensions.

Fit-check your bag before buying
- Measure the biggest rigid or flat item you carry, including any portfolio or board.
- Compare all three dimensions with published internal dimensions; if those are missing, ask the seller or manufacturer rather than substituting the laptop compartment measurement.
- Check the opening as well as the compartment. A nominally roomy interior may still be awkward for a stiff or oversized pad to pass through.
- Lay out your actual supplies and devices, then decide whether you need one open space, divided storage or protective camera compartments.
