Make an Easter egg-shaped coaster by sewing fabric strips through its backing and batting as you piece the top. The AllPeopleQuilt pattern, designed by Lindsay Mayland and updated March 13, 2025, finishes at 4 × 5-1/4 inches. It uses a stitched egg outline and a pinked edge rather than a turned or bound finish. View the pattern and download its egg template.
What you need for one coaster
The pattern’s yardage and cutting directions assume 42 inches of usable fabric width. For one coaster, gather:

- Assorted batik scraps
- One 6-inch-square piece of backing fabric
- One 6-inch-square piece of batting
- An air- or water-soluble fabric marking pen
- Pinking shears
Cut seven strips from the scraps, each 1 to 1-1/2 inches wide and at least 6 inches long. The stated measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances. The pattern credits Expressions Batiks Elementals and Expressions Batiks Tjaps by Riley Blake Designs as the fabrics used; those are examples, not required products.
How to sew the coaster quilt-as-you-go
- Place the backing square right side down, then lay the batting square on top.
- At the bottom edge, position two fabric strips with right sides together and their long edges aligned. Sew 1/4 inch from the aligned top edge, stitching through both strips, batting, and backing.
- Press the top strip open. Position the next strip against the exposed edge, right sides together, and sew through all layers. Press the new strip open.
- Continue adding strips in this way until the layered square is covered. The strips are pieced to the batting and backing as you go, so there is no separate quilting step for this construction.
- On the pieced face, use the soluble marking pen to trace the egg outline from the downloadable pattern. Stitch along the drawn line, backstitching at both ends.
- With pinking shears, trim about 1/4 inch outside the stitched outline.
Use the egg template and keep the edge finish simple
Use the pattern’s downloadable egg piece for the outline rather than estimating the curve. After stitching, the instructions call for trimming beyond the seam with pinking shears. They do not call for turning the coaster right side out or binding the edge, so those steps from other coaster projects do not belong in this pattern.

Pinking shears are the clearest tool to buy if you do not already own them, because the pattern specifically uses them for the final cut. The marking pen and a small amount of batting are also listed supplies; suitable fabric scraps may be on hand already.
How this differs from other quilt-as-you-go coasters
Quilt-as-you-go means sewing the fabric piecing through the batting while building the top, combining piecing and quilting. Amy Latta describes the method as sewing “through the batting as you’re piecing the fabric, completing two steps at the same time.” Her tutorial is for a square coaster, not this egg-shaped pattern.
