Qwen-Image is Alibaba’s open-weight image-generation model family, best known for rendering readable English and Chinese text inside generated images. The original 20-billion-parameter model launched on August 4, 2025, and was followed by the open-weight Qwen-Image-2512 update. It can create posters, signs, packaging concepts, menus, social graphics, and other text-heavy visuals, but it does not guarantee perfect typography.

What is Qwen-Image?
Qwen-Image is an image-generation foundation model from Alibaba’s Qwen team. The original release combines text-to-image generation, complex text rendering, and image-editing capabilities. Unlike a conventional consumer image app, it is also a downloadable model intended for local and developer workflows.

The original model is described as a 20B MMDiT image model. Its headline feature is the ability to place meaningful text into an image, including English and Chinese characters, while maintaining a more coherent relationship between the words, layout, and visual design than many image generators traditionally managed.
Qwen’s launch materials highlight use cases including advertisements, posters, product packaging, street signs, book covers, menus, infographics, comic panels, calligraphy, and bilingual social-media graphics. The separate Qwen-Image-Edit workflow should not be confused with the base text-to-image model: it is focused on changing existing images while preserving aspects of their design.
Why embedded text matters
Image generators have historically been unreliable at writing. They may produce misspelled words, duplicate or omit letters, scramble reading order, distort Chinese characters, or create lettering that looks plausible but has no linguistic meaning. They also tend to struggle with multiple text blocks, numbers, punctuation, and consistent typography.
Qwen-Image treats text, layout, and imagery as a combined generation problem. Its published materials specifically emphasize both alphabetic English and logographic Chinese. That makes it particularly interesting for:
- English-Chinese posters and advertisements
- Storefront signs and menus
- Packaging and label concepts
- Book covers and presentation graphics
- Infographics and comic panels
- Chinese calligraphy and signage concepts
This is a relative advantage, not a promise of perfect typesetting. Long sentences, tiny lettering, dense paragraphs, unusual fonts, rare Chinese characters, mixed scripts, curved text, and exact numerical strings can still fail. Always proofread generated text at full resolution.

As of the August 18, 2026 research check, Qwen-Image-2512 is the clearest open-weight successor to the original model. Check the live model card before downloading because model names, repositories, and licensing information can change.

Qwen’s original technical report and launch material claim strong performance in text rendering and image editing. The Qwen-Image-2512 model card also describes more than 10,000 blind evaluations and presents the model as the strongest open-source model in its comparison. Those are first-party claims, not independent proof that it is universally superior to every competing generator.
A meaningful evaluation should test more than a single poster. Try:
- Short English words and long English phrases
- Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese if relevant to your project
- Mixed English-Chinese text
- Numbers, punctuation, and dates
- Several text blocks
- Small, rotated, curved, or perspective text
- New generation versus editing an existing sign or label
For professional work, treat the model as a strong visual-generation assistant rather than a replacement for typesetting software. Generate the composition, inspect every word and character, then replace critical copy in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, Canva, or another layout tool.
How to try Qwen-Image online
Qwen Chat
The easiest route is Qwen Chat, which the Qwen-Image-2512 model card directs users toward. Account requirements, regional access, quotas, pricing, and available models can change, so verify the current terms on the service.

Hugging Face demo
The official Qwen-Image-2512 demo provides a browser-based way to experiment without configuring a local GPU. Hosted spaces may have queues, temporary outages, changing limits, or limited regional availability.
How to run Qwen-Image locally
Local inference gives you more control over files and workflows, but the original model is substantial. The original Hugging Face repository listing is approximately 57.7 GB. That is repository size, not a universal minimum VRAM requirement: actual memory needs depend on model version, precision, resolution, inference steps, offloading, attention implementation, and your software stack.

ComfyUI
ComfyUI’s Qwen-Image documentation provides native workflows. A typical process is:
- Install or update ComfyUI.
- Download the official or ComfyUI-compatible model files.
- Place them in the directories required by the current workflow.
- Import the supplied workflow JSON.
- Select the correct model or checkpoint.
- Enter the exact text you want rendered.
- Queue the workflow and inspect the output at 100% zoom.
Do not rely on old folder names or fixed hardware figures. ComfyUI packaging, model formats, and workflow requirements can change between releases.

Keep the copy short and make the layout unambiguous. Put exact wording in quotation marks, specify line breaks, request one primary text block, and ask the model not to add extra words.

Do not invent additional characters.If the result is wrong, shorten the text, simplify the composition, increase contrast, make the lettering larger, or generate separate visual elements. Proofread every character before publication.
Is Qwen-Image open source?
For the original Qwen-Image release, “open source” is common shorthand, but “open-weight model released with Apache 2.0 code/model licensing” is more precise.

Apache 2.0 generally permits commercial use, modification, redistribution, and sublicensing subject to its conditions. However, open weights do not automatically mean open training data, free cloud inference, or identical terms for every later Qwen model.
Before commercial deployment, inspect:
- The exact model repository and license
- NOTICE files and third-party components
- Diffusers, ComfyUI, CUDA, and other dependency terms
- Any hosted-service terms if you use Qwen Chat or an API
- Privacy and data-handling requirements for uploaded images
Downloading weights may avoid per-image model fees, but local generation still incurs hardware, storage, electricity, cloud-GPU, and engineering costs.
Who should use it?
Choose Qwen-Image when accurate embedded English or Chinese text is central, local control matters, or you are comfortable with Python, Diffusers, ComfyUI, and GPU configuration.
Prefer a hosted generator when you lack suitable hardware, need fast iteration, want collaboration and asset management, or require predictable service support and throughput.
Use a conventional design tool for final production when the asset contains legal copy, prices, tables, disclaimers, financial figures, regulated claims, fine print, accessibility-sensitive text, or strict brand typography.
Bottom line
Qwen-Image is a credible open-weight option for generating bilingual visual concepts and text-heavy imagery, with English and Chinese rendering as its defining attraction. Qwen-Image-2512 is the key later open-weight version to investigate, while Qwen-Image-2.0 should not be treated as open-weight without checking its current release terms. For dependable professional artwork, use Qwen-Image to create the visual direction, then proofread and typeset important text separately.
