Rakhi is the thread tied around a sibling’s wrist during Raksha Bandhan, and the word is also commonly used for the observance itself. The gesture conveys affection, prayers and good wishes; contemporary official messages also emphasize mutual responsibility and the ties that connect families and communities.
What is a rakhi, and how does it relate to Raksha Bandhan?
A rakhi is the thread or band traditionally tied around a sibling’s wrist. Raksha Bandhan is the wider observance associated with that gesture. In everyday use, people often say “Rakhi” for both the thread and the festival.
The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, describes the thread as a symbol of prayers and well-wishes between siblings. The meaning can extend beyond a simple exchange of gifts: in her message on the eve of Raksha Bandhan in 2026, President Droupadi Murmu described the festival as expressing warmth, respect and mutual responsibility across siblings, families, friends and society. She wrote, “This festival reminds us that every relationship rests on the pillars of trust, sensitivity and mutual cooperation.” (President of India, 27 August 2026)

What happens during a Rakhi celebration?
There is no single checklist that every household follows. The Ministry of Tourism describes a common sequence that may include aarti and tilak, tying the rakhi, and sharing wishes and gifts. Its guide lists a decorated plate, or thali, with a rakhi, vermilion, unbroken rice, sweets, a diya and incense.
A common household sequence
- Prepare the thali. A household may arrange the rakhi, vermilion, rice, sweets, a diya and incense on a decorated plate.
- Offer aarti and apply tilak. These are among the practices described in the official tourism guide.
- Tie the rakhi and exchange wishes. The thread is tied around the sibling’s wrist as a gesture of affection and good wishes.
- Share sweets or gifts. These may be part of the gathering, but neither gifts nor a particular ritual sequence defines every celebration.
These are examples of common practice, not mandatory steps. Customs can vary by household and community; the official guide is not a comprehensive account of every regional or family tradition.

What stories are associated with Raksha Bandhan?
Two traditional stories recounted in the tourism guide are the Krishna-Draupadi cloth episode and the story of Lakshmi and Bali. They are best understood as legends associated with the festival, not as independently established historical accounts of its origin. The stories give cultural and religious context to the observance, but the sources cited here do not establish a single historical origin for Raksha Bandhan.
