September clip art ranges from back-to-school pencils and apples to calendar graphics and early-fall leaves. Choose an image by its subject, file format, intended placement, and—especially—its individual reuse terms: a free download is not automatically cleared for commercial use.
What September clip art usually depicts
September-themed collections can combine school-year and seasonal imagery rather than treating the month as exclusively autumnal. For example, Illustoon’s collection includes colorful leaves, school supplies, Labor Day themes, calendar art, pencils, books, apples, an apple tree, schoolchildren, a school bus, wheat, and a pumpkin. These are examples from one collection, not a definitive list of what September artwork must show.
For a broader late-year seasonal mood, the Library of Congress’s Autumn and Halloween collection covers activities and scenery from late September through early November, including harvests and changing leaves. It also includes Halloween and Día de Muertos material, so check individual images for the occasion and tone you need.
Where to find September images
Free-to-use historical images
The Library of Congress describes its Autumn and Halloween selection as “copyright free pictures” and says the selected items come from its Prints & Photographs Division unless otherwise noted. The collection description calls them free to use and reuse. Check the record for the specific item you plan to use, including its rights statement and any exceptions; a collection-level description does not erase item-level qualifications.
Transparent PNG clip art
Illustoon’s September clip art collection identifies its images as PNG files with transparent backgrounds. That format can make it easier to place an illustration over a colored page or design without a rectangular background. The listing’s use of “free” language does not, by itself, establish a general commercial license. Review the terms that apply to the particular file and use.
Stock illustrations and vectors
iStock’s September illustration listings include stock illustrations and vectors, with examples such as autumn leaves, seasonal banners, September lettering, and calendars. A stock catalog is an option when you need artwork under a commercial licensing arrangement; read the asset’s license and permitted-use details before incorporating it into a project.
How to choose the right image
- Match the subject to the project. School supplies or a bus may suit a classroom handout; leaves or harvest imagery may fit a fall invitation. Calendar art or lettering can work when the month itself needs to be prominent.
- Choose the format for the placement. A transparent PNG is convenient for layered page layouts. A vector may be preferable when the design needs to scale, but confirm the available file type and software compatibility on the asset listing.
- Check the final size and background. Preview the artwork at the size it will appear. Look for unwanted white backgrounds, low-resolution edges, or details that become hard to read when reduced.
- Confirm the rights for your intended use. Personal, classroom, and commercial uses may be treated differently. Read the terms for the exact image, and save or note the relevant rights information when you download it.
Check reuse rights before publishing
Permission depends on the source and the individual asset, not merely on whether a result appears in a search for “free September clip art.” The Library of Congress explicitly presents its collection as free to use and reuse, while directing readers to item records for exceptions. Other providers have their own terms: a free-looking listing is not proof that an image can be used in a product, advertisement, or other commercial design.

For a classroom worksheet or personal project, still check the provider’s conditions rather than assuming that educational or noncommercial use is automatically permitted. For commercial work, verify the license for the specific image before distribution and follow any attribution or other conditions it sets.
