Choose a compatible quilting foot
The guide describes several foot types. A hopping foot is a common choice; a ruler foot is designed to work with quilting rulers; a darning or embroidery foot may be an option if it came with your machine; and a glide foot can help move across bulkier seams. The right choice depends on the task and machine. Check compatibility with your machine’s manufacturer or dealer, particularly before buying a ruler foot.
Gather practice materials
The guide’s general starter list includes a working sewing machine, 50-weight cotton thread, size 12 or 14 machine needles, a free-motion quilting foot, quilting gloves, basted practice sandwiches, and paper and pencil. Gloves are listed as a supply, not established as necessary for micro quilting or as something used in Vicki’s demonstration. Practicing on basted samples lets you work on control before quilting a finished project.
