A responsible recreation of a 19th-century Japanese tsuba begins with one specific museum object—not a blend of period motifs—and ends labeled as a modern study copy. A strong reference is the British Museum’s iron guard TS.47, dated 1845, with a pierced water-wheel design. Its catalog gives an outline and object-specific measurements, but not a complete set of instructions for making a replica.
What a tsuba is—and what a recreation can claim
A tsuba is the guard fitted between a Japanese sword’s hilt and blade. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes its purposes as protecting the hand and helping balance the weapon; the Royal Ontario Museum notes that tsuba also took on aesthetic roles over time. A study recreation can explore a particular object’s form and decoration, but it should not be presented as an authentic 19th-century artifact.
The Japanese practice of copying historical works as training is called utsushi. The V&A describes it as a way for students to understand processes involved in making an original. That framing supports a careful study copy; it does not establish that any modern maker uses the same materials or techniques as the historical maker. V&A, “How was it made? Tsuba?”

For a focused recreation, TS.47 is a particularly clear starting point. The British Museum catalogs it as an iron, mokko-shaped tsuba made by Naokatsu and dated 1845. It is pierced with a water-wheel design. Its recorded height is 8.50 cm, width 8.10 cm, and blade-hole height 2.9 cm. These measurements describe TS.47 alone; they are not standard dimensions for tsuba. British Museum, TS.47

Before drawing or making, record the information the chosen object’s catalog actually provides:
- Date and attribution: note whether the record names a maker, a school, or only a period. TS.47 is attributed to Naokatsu and dated 1845.
- Body and outline: TS.47 is iron and mokko-shaped.
- Openings and motif: its catalog identifies a pierced water-wheel design and gives a measurement for the blade opening.
- Documented dimensions: keep the catalog’s measurements attached to this object rather than treating them as a general specification.
Keep other 19th-century examples distinct
“19th-century tsuba” does not identify one uniform material or decorative style. The Royal Ontario Museum describes examples ranging from pierced iron guards to works combining iron with applied or chiseled ornament in copper, gold, shibuichi, silver, and shakudo. It also discusses gold overlay using nunome zogan on a wickerwork design and a 19th-century example incorporating enamel. These are useful comparisons, not details to add automatically to TS.47. A second distinct comparison is British Museum OA+.3104, a 19th-century iron plate with pierced, engraved, stamped, and hammered features. The catalog describes an ishimeiji surface—a hammered texture made with punches—alongside an openwork heart-shaped motif and a halberd-like design combining piercing and engraving. It also records openings for a utility knife and hairpin, plus sekigane plugs used to adjust the blade opening. Those features belong to OA+.3104, not TS.47. British Museum, OA+.3104
When comparing candidates, consider their date and attribution, body material and shape, surface treatment, use of openwork or engraving, any inlay or applied decoration, and the motif. If you discuss symbolism, tie the interpretation to the specific object and its museum account rather than generalizing it to every tsuba.

Plan the study before making
- Select one cataloged object. Save its museum record and use that record as the authority for the design. Decide whether the aim is a close visual study or a modern interpretation.
- Document the outline and openings. Note the overall shape, central opening, and any secondary openings shown or described. Use only measurements recorded for that object.
- Map supported visible features. For TS.47, the documented features include an iron body, mokko outline, and pierced water-wheel design. Do not add OA+.3104’s hammered texture or fittings and imply they belong to the same historical design.
- State what the recreation interprets. A plan can identify which visible qualities it will study, while distinguishing those from undocumented choices about how to make them.
- Compare and label the finished work. Set the modern study copy beside the selected reference and describe it as a recreation, not an original historical object.
Where the evidence stops
Museum records document objects and visible features, while the Smithsonian conservation record summarizes historical metalworking approaches. Its bibliography entry describes study of carving, inlay, gilding, layered metal, mechanically or chemically produced textures, and patination altered by polishing, heating, or organic coatings. It is an abstract/catalog record, not a modern fabrication recipe or safety guide. Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute, “The techniques of the Japanese tsuba-maker”
Accordingly, a recreation plan should not claim a particular forging sequence, heat treatment, alloy grade, patination chemistry, tool sequence, or safety procedure unless a reliable source documents it or the maker supplies firsthand information. The available object records do not provide a complete modern workshop process. The Smithsonian also holds a separate 19th-century tsuba record, which can serve as another object reference but should not be conflated with the British Museum examples. Smithsonian Institution, 19th-century Japanese tsuba
