The AllPeopleQuilt Rectangle Bargello Quilt finishes at 36½ × 68 inches. Its center is made from 15 horizontal rows of assorted cotton rectangles, framed by graduated-width blue strips. The pattern is not the same project as a jelly-roll Bargello: its listed materials and cuts are specific to this rectangle design.
What the Rectangle Bargello Quilt pattern makes
The finished quilt measures 36½ × 68 inches. Its visual movement comes from colored rectangles arranged in rows and bands of blue strips that change width across the quilt. The pattern specifies 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics, and its measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances.

Use the full pattern cutting list and assembly diagram for the exact placements. The cut examples below illustrate the range of pieces, not a complete substitute for that list.
Materials for the exact pattern
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Yellow print | ½ yard |
| Green dot | ⅜ yard |
| Pink stripe | ¼ yard |
| Dark blue print | ½ yard |
| Lime green print | ⅜ yard |
| Dark pink print | ¼ yard |
| Light blue print | ⅛ yard |
| Blue small dot | ⅝ yard |
| Blue large dot, including binding | 1⅛ yards |
| Backing | 2½ yards |
| Batting | 45 × 76 inches |
The pattern includes varied rectangle and strip cuts. For example, yellow-print rectangles range from 1½ × 9½ inches through 5 × 9½ inches, while blue-large-dot cuts include strips from 1 × 36½ inches through 4 × 36½ inches and six 2½ × 42-inch binding strips. These are examples only; consult the full pattern cut list before cutting.
How to assemble the rectangle version
- Lay out the blue strips. Arrange the blue small-dot strips from widest to narrowest, leaving space for the pieced rows. Below them, arrange the blue large-dot strips from narrowest to widest.
- Make the 15 pieced rows. Follow the pattern diagram to arrange the specified colored rectangles into 15 horizontal rows. For Row 1, sew four assorted 1½ × 9½-inch rectangles together and press the seams in one direction. The row should measure 1½ × 36½ inches, including seam allowances. Repeat to make the remaining rows as directed.
- Join rows and strips. Place the pieced rows in numerical order between the two blue strip groups, then sew the units together to form the quilt top.
- Finish the quilt. Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and bind with the blue-large-dot binding strips.
Cutting accuracy and useful tools
Accurate cutting is particularly important when pieces and strips must align across a wide quilt top. Quilt Master’s Bargello Tips and Tricks advises accurate cutting and notes that strips longer than 20.5 inches can make sewing and strip cutting easier. A rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat are practical optional tools for making measured cuts; the Rectangle Bargello pattern does not specify a required brand or model.

Bargello projects can use different construction methods. The Rectangle Bargello is built from individual rectangles in rows between graduated strips. Missouri Star Quilt Co.’s separate Bargello tutorial uses tube construction with precut 2½-inch strips and makes a 50 × 61-inch quilt. Its materials should not be substituted for the rectangle pattern’s list.
| Feature | Rectangle Bargello Quilt | Missouri Star tube-pieced tutorial |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Pieced rectangle rows between graduated-width strips | Strip sets sewn into tubes, then cut into columns of varying widths |
| Finished size | 36½ × 68 inches | 50 × 61 inches |
| Starting fabric | Assorted cotton yardage and pattern-specific cuts | One roll of 2½-inch strips |
| Other listed materials | Pattern lists 2½ yards backing and 45 × 76-inch batting | ¾ yard background fabric, ¾ yard outer-border fabric, and 3¼ yards backing |
Choose between them by checking the construction method, finished dimensions, starting fabric format, cut complexity, and what the materials list includes. A 2½-inch strip roll is specified for the separate tube-pieced tutorial; the Rectangle Bargello’s varied yardage and rectangle cuts are not established as a jelly-roll substitute.
