What is a rectangle with rounded corners called?
The usual name is rounded rectangle. It has straight sides joined by curved corners. The radius is a key part of its definition, but it is not safe to assume that a radius value means the same thing in every drawing application or geometric construction.
In one formal construction, Wolfram MathWorld defines a rounded rectangle as the convex hull of four equal circles, each with radius r, whose centers sit at the corners of a rectangle with side lengths a and b. The straight sections connect the circles’ outer edges. If one side of the center rectangle is zero, the filled shape becomes a stadium. See Wolfram MathWorld’s rounded rectangle definition.

How do radius and corner treatments differ?
A larger corner radius makes a rounded corner more pronounced. In design and drafting, however, not every altered corner is rounded: a scalloped corner is another curved treatment, while a chamfer replaces the corner with a straight bevel. CorelDRAW documents these as distinct corner treatments; its cited help page is legacy documentation, so exact controls may differ in newer releases. CorelDRAW: Drawing rectangles and squares.
Area and perimeter for the circle-based construction
For MathWorld’s construction, a and b are the side lengths of the rectangle between the circle centers, and r is the radius of each of the four circles. With those definitions:

- Area: ab + 2r(a + b) + πr²
These formulas use the center rectangle’s dimensions, not the rounded rectangle’s outside width and height. If you are given outside dimensions instead, convert them to the center rectangle’s dimensions before applying the formulas; do not substitute the outside measurements directly.
How to draw a rounded rectangle in common design software
The controls are application-specific: a dedicated tool, a corner-radius field, or editable corner settings may be involved. These workflows are not interchangeable.

Adobe Illustrator
- Select the Rounded Rectangle tool and drag on the canvas to create the shape.
- Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the proportions to a square.
- Drag a corner handle to change the roundness. Set the width and height in the Properties panel if you need specific dimensions.

Adobe Photoshop desktop
- Select the Rectangle tool.
- Set the corner Radius field to the value you want, then draw the rectangle.
Current Photoshop desktop documentation places the radius control in the Rectangle tool. Adobe says the separate Rounded Rectangle tool was removed in Photoshop 22.3 in March 2021. Its help page was last updated October 4, 2026. Draw rectangles in Photoshop on desktop.

CorelDRAW
- Draw a rectangle or square.
- Set the corner size, modifying corners individually or together as needed.
- Use the relative-to-object scaling option if you want the corner size to scale with the shape.

For a quick shape, use the rounded-rectangle or rectangle tool available in your application. If the design needs precise dimensions or different radii at different corners, check whether the application lets you edit those corners separately and whether the shape remains editable after drawing. Treat each application’s radius control according to its own documentation rather than assuming values carry across tools.
