Motorized or smart shades are a practical modern alternative to traditional window treatments, while cellular (honeycomb) shades are a distinct construction that can be motorized or operated manually. Smart controls can add convenience; cellular fabric cells can help insulate a window. Neither feature guarantees a particular energy saving, and current product announcements do not establish that these shades are taking over the market in 2026.
What is the modern alternative to traditional window treatments?
For homeowners considering an upgrade, the clearest alternatives are motorized shades and cellular shades. These terms describe different things: motorized means the shade is raised or lowered by a motor, while cellular describes pleated fabric cells that trap air near the window. A cellular shade can be motorized, but it does not have to be.
Depending on the model and system, motorized coverings may use a remote, app, voice control, or scheduled automation. GE Lighting announced Matter-compatible smart shades at CES 2026 in blackout and light-filtering options. That is a product offering, not evidence that every smart shade supports Matter or that smart shades now dominate the market. GE Lighting’s announcement describes the company’s product approach. Its VP of Product Management, Kara Perdue, said the shades were designed to emphasize “simplicity, flexibility, and a clean aesthetic”; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent product assessment.

Product details matter more than category labels. Lutron, for example, describes cellular products with fabric choices and custom-made shades; its product pages can help show the range of construction and controls, but features should be confirmed for the model being considered. Do cellular shades save energy?
They can help reduce heat transfer because their cells trap air at the window. The U.S. Department of Energy describes window attachments, including insulating options, as a potential way to improve performance. Its 2021 fact sheet reports potential savings of 15% of annual household HVAC energy use compared with vinyl blinds. That figure is DOE’s stated comparison for window attachments; it is not a guaranteed result for every cellular shade, home, climate, or installation. Fit and product evidence affect how useful an insulating shade may be. A poorly fitted covering may not perform like a well-fitted one, and the DOE figure should not substitute for product-specific ratings or test documentation. Are smart blinds worth it?
They may be worthwhile if convenient operation is a priority—for example, for hard-to-reach windows or when you want to control multiple coverings without adjusting each by hand. The value depends on the features you will actually use and whether the controls fit your home’s setup.
- Choose manual cordless if you want straightforward operation without connected controls.
- Choose motorized remote control if powered operation is useful but app or voice integration is not essential.
- Choose a connected model only after confirming its app, hub requirements, voice-assistant support, schedules, and protocol compatibility. Matter compatibility is specific to products that offer it; GE announced it for its 2026 smart shades, not for the category as a whole.
Compare motorized cellular window shades if you want both powered operation and cellular construction. Before buying, confirm the window measurements, installation constraints, preferred privacy and room-darkening level, and whether the manufacturer publishes relevant performance evidence.

What are the safest cordless window coverings for homes with children?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises choosing cordless window coverings when young children may be present. Its 2021 release reported an average of about nine deaths per year among children age five and younger from window-covering cord strangulation, and nearly 200 incidents involving children up to age eight from January 2009 through December 2020. These are historical figures reported in that release, not a current annual rate. Read the CPSC safety release.
Do not assume that “motorized” automatically means a covering has no accessible cord hazards, or that a “cordless” label alone establishes every safety detail. Check the product and its installation. How to choose the right shade for each room
- Decide what matters most. For insulation, consider cellular construction; for convenient operation, consider motorization; for a child-safety priority, follow CPSC’s cordless guidance.
- Set light and privacy needs. Compare light-filtering with room-darkening or blackout options where available, and consider how the room is used.
- Check fit and installation. Determine whether the product is stock-sized or custom-made, measure the window as directed by its manufacturer, and verify mounting requirements and obstructions.
- Verify controls and compatibility. Confirm whether the shade is manually cordless or motorized and, for connected models, which remote, app, hub, voice-control system, schedule, or protocol it supports.
- Look for performance documentation. If energy savings are a key reason for buying, seek a relevant rating or documented test basis for the product instead of assuming all cellular shades perform alike.
